Hi,
the other day I got dreadlocks, but there's one problem - they are huge. The individual dreads themselves are realtively thin, but there's just so many of them that is just sticks out like a big bush. I think the problem's due to me having very thick hair (as in there's a lot of it). The only solution i can think of to have an undercut so the dreads on top can lay flatter. Has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Dreads take shape over time. Give them a month to lock up... also, they are supposed to be kinda big and wild.... that's why they are dreads.

cheers.
Thanks a lot for that site, there's a lot of useful stuff on there, cheers.
Having had dreads in the past, I can attest to the hugeness problem. I didn't view it as a problem though, I just went with the flow. . . the only solution I can think of is to let them grow longer. BTW, what method did you have? dread perm, backcombing? I did mine myself with the backcombing method, but realized I went about dreadlocks the wrong way (and I missed my curly hair) and worked them out with a bottle of conditioner. There's a photo of them on my site, under the "what's new" link.
Good luck with them, just give them time, and most problems will sort themselves out.
P.S. do you happen to have any photos of your dreads?
Thanks for the advice, I think i'm just going to live with them for a few months and let them do what they like. I used the backcombing method (well I didn't, but I forced a few close friends to). Unfortunetly I don't have any photos.
Thanks again
Did you have your dreads put in by someone with no experience in making dreads? It sounds like what you're saying. I suggest (if that is the case) that you find yourself a dread specialist to make some adjustments for you.
wear a wool hat or "toque" as us canadians call it (lol) to bed every night for a week or 2, that will let them lay flat!
just stop looking at your hair!
if you got dreads for vanity, you're not going to have them for long...
Just give them a year or two! (they will probably get "flatter" in less time than that though (unless your hair is short))
good luck brother :)

In my own experience, they are really big and point everywhere when they're new, but they settle within a few weeks/a month.
I can't say more than what has already been said, but don't be tempted to try things like beeswax on flatten them, the wax will obviously get stuck inside the dread and it will look awful. Just incase you've read something on the internet recently, don't want it to go wrong for you!
Everyones dreads are big at the beginning, they WILL go flat, give it a few weeks and they'll fall flat, don't worry! ,esmerized had dreads in the past so he knows from experience btw.
