the sides an and back underneath? Why do people do this? What are the benifits for and against?
I think you mean an 'undercut' - I did this shortly before I cut my hair short when I was younger. The benefits are that it's not as hot in summer, and makes your hair lie flatter. Bad thing is if you don't like it, or if you want another style you have to re-grow all that hair which is a major task.
I would recommend against doing it - if you want your hair to look neater when it's tied back, you can trim the hair in front of your ears and neaten it around that area.. I think that's the best idea, and certain;y what I intend to do myself.

Yeah, I have only seen a couple people close up with that kind of hair style..
the first time I saw it was off of Jason Newstead from metallica, and I thought he looked really ridiculous and stupid, but thats me.. i just really dont like it personally
Depends on what you are trying to do with your hair.
If you are really trying to grow it long then you won't want to do this. Several guys here have regretted doing so because as it gets longer the shaved parts tend to clash with the longer hair and if you decide to grow out the shaved parts then you will find that it grows funny and again clashes with your longer hair. Many who do this are then faced with the option of cutting off the longer hair and basically starting over to match the previously shaved parts.
Cutting your hair short is contrary to growing it long.
Many guys aren't actually trying to grow their hair long but are rather trying to achieve a trendy style while others don't really plan on keeping it all that long so they experiment with their hair, often wrecking it or at least preventing it from getting very long.
