I have been growing my hair for 8 months now and it seems like the back bottom of my hair is growing longer that the front- sides. People are saying that I look like I have a Mullet. I am certainly NOT losing my hair as the front-sides are growing really good its just that the back-bottom looks longer. I have not cut my hair at all since it began growing. Will this stage end soon? Should I cut the back a little to even up with the rest of my hair or leave it ALONE. I'm leaning more towards leaving it alone and wait it out. Is ridicule part of the growing process?
You undoubtedly started with hair that was longer in the back than the front. Some people's hair grows faster in the back than the front anyway.
If you're planning on a trim to even up sometime in the near future, you could take a little bit off the back now, or have it shaped without shortening the top layer. If you're not planning any trims, then just wait a while longer, and the look will change again.
No I started with a Fade "Army" haircut. You know buzzcut on the sides-back w/ longer on top.
We're talking about the same thing here. When you started growing, the hair at the back of your neck was already down to the back of your neck. When you grow three inches, you have an instant mullet, because your longest layer is brushing your shoulders, while the top is down to your ears.
I always encourage everyone to leave it and keep growing. You come to a point were everything starts to blend in nicely.
A year from now should do the trick.
Best thing to do.
Mostly the case for ALL GUYS growing-out their hair. Pay no attention to it and do your own thing. Once long the ridicule ceases and compliments pour forth.
People always confuse Mullet's with hair that is showing around the collar. Its a fallacy...
By Definition a Mullet is long at the back and "shorter" at the sides on top. Hair that is roughtly the same length from growing out from scratch cannot be a mullet unless the back started longer than the top and sides... In which case you had a Mullet to begin with... (But you didn't you had an "Army Fade Cut")
Why do people get the wrong idea?
Lets face it, the hair at your neck is at most 3 inches from the top of your shoulders. So if you start from an Army "fade" cut. after 6-8 months its gonna be peaking around your shoulders and start to look long. But the hair at your fringe will only be just covering your eyes... this is not considered "long" but hair touching the shoulders for some reason is considered long, even there individual folicles may be exactly the same length front and back.
But lets be clear, THERE IS NO MULLET HERE. People are just ribbing you by using an unfair comparision to a style which is now deemed unfashionable. Why? because your hair is getting long. Its a slur, plain and simple. Ignore it unless you personally are unhappy with the way your hair looks at the moment.
Sorted
Thanx for the advice. I knew it could'nt be a Mullet if I started with longer hair on type and completely shaven on back-sides. I'm really starting to dislike short haired people. Now I just ask them how much they spend a week on the same haircuts. My cousin goes to the barber 2x a week @ $10-12 a pop you get the idea. Thats ridiculous. Women like long hair better anyway, or so I think.
