Picture Purged
So...I've only been watching the board for about a week now, and just made my first post yesterday or the day before. I have to say - though it might sound corny - I've actually learned something valuable about myself since "hanging out" here. Previously I'd always been down on myself about my "curly, coarse, unruly" hair. I'm happy to say I've actually kinda changed my mind about it in the last few days. I'd always felt I needed to "dress it up" a lot to make it presentable, but since visting the board I've decided to let it go. You know what? It's really not that bad. I mean, my hair is actually kind of soft, and I decided I don't need a lot of goop to cover it up or hide behind. I know this sounds goofy, but I kinda like my hair now. Hmmmm...I'm developing self-esteem for my hair.
Anyway, I took a new pic today w/out the usual glop I drench my hair in and I kind of like the way it looks. (I know I'm still a "short hair" but I thought I'd share the pic anyway.) Thanks again for all your support.
Well, you look great and all the best in growing your hair long!

Thanks. I'll keep you posted.

I think you have great hair! I am convinced that we each need to like our own hair--it's all we will ever get, and yearning after someone else's hair is a waste of time and energy. I like my own thick relatively straight-sometimes-wavy hair, but I think curly hair like yours is very attractive, and will really look good long.
And, for what it's worth, I think that men who grow their hair out in this culture can't help be reflect and learn some things about themselves. It may be one of the few "rites of passage" left for us short of creating an intentional community to do just that. Glad you are here!
Robert
Totally agree with Robert here.
Grim
Thanks!
Thanks. All in all, this is probably just another rite of passage. I always wished I had straight blond hair, and of course it was always coal black (when I was younger) and curly.
I'm definitely up for the challenge. Today I actually appeared in public WITHOUT the baseball cap I've been chained to since I decided to let my hair grow. That's progress!
You have no idea how much easier the akward stage will be for you once you let your hair do its natural thing. . .WELCOME!

Thanks for the welcome...and the support. Actually, when I was prowling around the site before joining I noticed your hair. Seems to be similar to what mine is when it grows out. At least I THINK so...I haven't let it grow beyond 1/2" for more than 10 years. I appreciate hearing from you re: curly hair. Thanks.
It isn't til you start to let your hair be itself that you can find out what it is and is not. I have observed that many people who have spent their entire lives fighting their natural hair discover that their hair actually is very different than they always assumed.
I think you're right. When I look back on it, I've always had a few particles of attention on my hair: Should I change it? What do people think of it? Is it acceptable? Blah, blah, blah. Better just to let it go and find out what it's really like. Thanks for the input.
Hey. I think your hair looks great. Your profile view looks like you're something that would appear in a greek camio or something.
Love,
Kiat T.
Thanks for the compliment. I'll keep you all posted on the progress.
I think you look fantastic with short hair mind, you can definately pull off the short look anyway, you probably know that well, that's why you've never grown it out before. But I've got a feeling long ahir will suit you even more than short!
Say no to gel, your hair will look much better without it.
