This is somewhat in response to Stephstar's reply to my thread, which is located down a little bit.
She told me that she never washes her hair, and hasn't since 1994- and that her hair is in great condition. Sounds interesting to me... Does anyone else never wash it?
Em, well I wash my hair every second to third day because my hair is on the oily side. Personally, I wouldn't want to go without a wash for more than four days at the max. I'm not sure if not washing it, that it will stay in great condition, unless you have a very good diet that you follow. By washing your hair, you're not only giving your hair more vitality, but you're also "feeding" your hair the vitamins it needs to stay healthy.
Again, just my point of view.
Thee Longhaired Gal
By washing your hair, you're not only giving your hair more vitality, but you're also "feeding" your hair the vitamins it needs to stay healthy.
I agree that hair needs washing to prevent icky scalp buildup and bacteria growth (YUCK!), but what you do mean by "feeding" the hair? It's dead already once it comes out of your scalp. ????
Em, yeah that is also what I've read...
However, I'm of the opinion, ...if the hair is dead already once it comes out of your scalp, then why do you need all the minerals and vitamins to keep it healthy? it's dead anyways.
The bottom line to this thread is that your hair ultimately reflects the overall condition of your body. If your body is healthy and well nourished, your hair will be your shining glory.
Which leads me to the next question: if hair is dead, then you shouldn't worry about what you eat right? Because it won't matter in the end, since it won't absorb the nutrients.
If you want to keep your hair healthy, you must look after it. The right vitamins and minerals play a major role in keeping your hair healthy. Any nutritional deficiencies can lead to thinning hair or even total baldness. It is a well known fact that an under active thyroid can result in frizzy or brittle hair while an overactive thyroid turn hair greasy and limp.
Thee Longhaired Gal
Well, no, because what you eat plays a role in the hair that's not dead yet - the stuff that hasn't grown outside the scalp yet. So a good diet will help grow nice hair, but won't alter the hair that's already there.
My two cents' worth, anyway. :)

im a guy man not a wo9man
ps i havent washed mnjy hair since may 2004 i made a typo:)
ps my scalp is clean and healthy and dosent smell and my hair is in great condition i only rinse it with warm water now 2 to 3 times a week and its easier to comb dosent tangle and isnt staticy
try it see the results or your money back;)
I can imagine it might work with someone whose hair is not oily, and doesn't have scalp issues. But oil doesn't mix with water. If somebody's got oily hair or an oily scalp, they're going to need to use some sort of product to dissolve the gunk off.
my hair does get oily but not a lot of it and the warm water washes it away id really recommend it to anyone try it
Do you mean never shampoo and only use water or never wash ever? cos urgh! that sounds disgusting to me. Do you realise the amound of bacteria and fungi that would be living on your scalp and hair if you did this? You would also have no friends as you would stink to high heaven. You also would very likely develop severe scalp irritation and your hair would most likely fall out. I believe it was bad hygiene that caused some hairloss in the older days, but I cant remember where I saw that. The scalp is not able to secrete any acidic fluid capable of detering the growth of micro-organisms unlike other unmentionable parts of the body, it is not self cleaning. You may be able to get away with washing with only water if u are not susceptable to dandruff. However if you live in an area with hard water then you may not be happy with this method due to the higher mineral content of this water is could affect the condition of your hair, soft water on the other hand would be better.
Can I ask what do you have against washing your hair? I wash mine every day as I dont like the oily look, or if I want to achieve a look somewhat reminiscent of second day hair I use products. Could it be that you have a bad shampoo or cond?? Depending on where you live there are a number of options avail whereby you cud wash as often as want but you hair would still not be stripped. If you decide to boycott shampooing your hair please shampoo your scalp time to time or you will likely develop sebhorrea.
Ok Ste, that was a mouthfull again, but informative as usual! :o) I def. agree on what you've said...
Thee Longhaired Gal
I was wondering, and was suppose to include this in my prev. message, but how is it that you know so much about hair? :o)
Wow, I'm glad to know that it helped - I'm going to get me some of that oil!
Thanks for your response, great to know! :o)
Thee Longhaired Gal
Very good to hear, I hope you like it! be sure to take them with a meal tho : )
Im just curious, have you every tried Biotin? or would Flaxseed oil be better for Helping the hair out. Is it true that it helps acne to?
Well, I don't really have anything against it- I just found that this past weekend, I washed my hair on Friday, but then I didn't wash it again until Monday, and I had good results. I have never gone longer than 3 days without washing it- in fact, this past weekend is one of the longest I've ever gone. I doubt I would boycott shampooing it- I just wondered if anyone else had done that.
As for the shampoo I use and my situation with that... http://the-light.com/longhair/messages/81348.html
Well I tried to find the ingredients of the garnier online bt to no avail. Anyways its a sure bet it contains sodium laureth sulphate and other sufactants or co-surfactants. You may be overstripping your hair with this, also I'd guess its silicone loaded so you'll also most likley be coating it with all sorts. Do you prefere your hair days after washing because it is less dry? If so you may benefit from a change in shampoo to a sulphate free or milder surfactant than SLES as it is stripping. There are a number of options depending on your location and your fundings... there are some baby body washes that dont have SLES that can be used on hair, there are also ranges of products (but more expensive) such as mastey, mop c system (my fav) etc. Alternatively you could use a facial cleanser to wash your hair as there are a number of SLES cleansers avail outthere which could also be used as very mild shampoos.
I cant stand not washing my hair for more than 5 days at the most. My hair gets really greasy if i dont wash it for 2 days and gets worse every day i dont wash it. Back when i was in 5th or 6th grade i was goin to school like a bum and didnt care what people thought of me, and all that mattered was getting my homework done, so i would wash my hair maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks, but i was young and stupid, with shorthair
Same here. Never thought about washing my hair, I could go weeks without washing my short hair! But my hair is naturally quite dry, so it used to take a week or more before I could feel the slightest feeling of oil in my hair. Now my hair is longer, I find I cannot go more than 7 days without washing, I think I managed 8 a few weeks ago, but that was exceptional. Now I wash my hair every 3-4 days.
Since the beginning of time, people have been washing their hair (in one form or another--even though shampoo hadn't been invented)
...and there are many good reasons for that.
*Smell
*Itchiness.
*Filth
*Oiliness
*Bugs
*Manageability
*Fungal infections
*To attract a mate (instead of repelling them!)
*Etc., etc., etc.
Sorry, but if I knew someone never washed his or her hair, I'd keep a wide distance from that person. They're probably the same type who never bathes either, except maybe once or twice every few years.
I've known of people who do this, and with great results, so they report. Most have very naturally healthy, normal scalps, meaning neither excessively oily or dry. Seems those with hair on the dry side of normal might do okay with this. One caveat is that they do brush their hair and scalps a lot to distribute natural oil and remove dirt and lint.
Oily scalps face an uphill battle with this. The overabundance of sebum on the scalp usually does eventually start to decay. You can tell this by the bad scalp smell. The bacterial breakdown can poison/smother the follicles, leading to increased fallout. In addition, other scalp problems can develop, such as I experience, namely breaking out at the hairline.

I wish I could. That would save so much time . . . but I find if I never wash it, I end up with loads of hair-line acne - which is a bugger and no mistake, my hair ends up acting finer and thinner than it is, I get dandruff, and it just generally looks and smells horrible. Whenever I go to touch it, I end up with enough oil on my hands to leave marks on regular paper. The only plus is that it's really easy to style, because the oil acts as a natural gel. But since it looks terrible once I get it up, it's not really worth it.
