I've read this somewhere...and wanted to know if this is true?
Thee Longhaired Gal
This is true, everything grows faster in the warm weather.
I believe it's true. I used to live in Orlando and my hair grew like crazy. My barber there told me hair grows faster in warm weather. I now live in Chicago and I don't think it grows as fast. (Am I just older?!?)
Actually, its a scientific fact that sunlight makes your grow faster. Hence in the summer months, when the days are longer, your hair will grow faster, and look thicker.
So it doesnt grow as fast in the winter because its colder? but what if you wear a warm hat all the time, will that help with the stunted growth? or is it sunlight that makes it grow?
Hi Longhaired Gal
I used to think that this was true because it seemed to act this way with me..........at least I thought. Now I am starting to think that growth cycles may come in waves (pardon the pun) and you just never know. Perhaps someone on this board lives in a year-round Tropical Climate and could tell us his views. Oh yes, he would have had to have lived in the usual Hot Summer, Cold Winter climate 1st so as to make a comparison. I DO believe that much vitamin D has somewhat of an effect.

When I use to live in South Africa, my hair was longer. As for the thickness, I've always had thick hair. I did realize I lost more hair during the winter times than during summer. Now that I live in The Netherlands, I can't really see the difference in growth. My hair grows fast, no matter what the climate I guess.

I live in a sub-tropical climate all year around. In Tenerife the temperatures vary from about 22 degrees in coldest winter days and 38 degrees in the hotest summer days. But on average they only vary between 24-34 degrees Celsius.
I can't say I notice any difference in growth rates between summer and winter, though it would appear I have recently undergone a growth spurt. But that is really only over the last 2-3 weeks, I wouldn't link it with Summer.
Sorted
I strongly believe that it's true. I grew and inch and a half since my trim back in July.
Not sure... I lived in Hawai'i for three years and during that time, it seemed like my hair growth came to a halt. But, I may be atypical. (May be? Ha!)
Hmm, interesting topic. My hair grows an inch on most months, sometimes more like 0.90 inches during other months. I haven't really been through winter with long hair yet so I'm not sure if it grows faster in the summer. But I think it generally grows 1 inch a month, any time of the year! Lucky me:)
There is zero data showing that light, warm weather, etc. can directly affect hair growth. The idea that it can falls under the category of old wives tales.
Hair Growth is determined by genetics and hormonal balances.
Now, your hair can be damaged by too much sun exposure and people in warm climates feeling that hair is too much to deal with may be prone to cutting it off, but it is more likely that any percieved changes are either just that (a matter of perception) or a change in your hormonal levels due to puberty, post-puberty, pregancy, aging, etc., or the hair cycle that you may not have experienced as graphically if you haven't grown your hair long before.
I have plenty of empirical evidence - years of examining how this is the case with my hair. Others I have spoken to about this also have found it to be the case.
