I'm thinking about cutting my hair and starting over.
I'll admit I don't know a lot about long hair and how it should look, but I'm not sure how good mine actually looks now. I don't have a scanner so I can't post a picture but I'll explain the best I can.
My hair is VERY thick and brown. It's similar looking to Cliff Burton's hair (Metallica's old bass player for those who don't know) except a little wavier.
The problem is, at one time I had my hair cut all one length and it still is one length for the most part, however there are a lot of shorter hairs now. I'm not sure if they're spit ends or broken hairs or what. Like I said I'm clueless about hair.
Also my hair never looks very neat in a pony tail. i'm not really even sure if i'm tieing it right, so could some one explain to me how it's done.
Anyway, do you guys think my hair might be too damaged, or is their a way to fix it so I won't need to cut it?

I think you worry too much...
Just do the things you instinctively know are good for your hair. (and your whole being)
- eat well
- exercise
- get some sun exposure
- dont put harmful chemicals on your head
I think I noticed some split hair and such when I was still using "regular" shampoo, and now, after months of using gentle soap (or no soap at all), eating a raw diet, biking everywhere I go, and not grooming my hair, I have nothing like this happening. My hair is full and strong and the tips are just fine.
figure out what works best for you!

I think Vincent answered most of your questions, but as for the shorter hairs, they are new hairs that are sprouting up to replace old hairs that fall out as part of the natural cycle.

I have yet to see anyone with long hair that didnt suit them,or have i seen some one with a ponytail that looked bad,and im sure it doesnt look bad on you. just follow the advice givin' by vincent, and its up to you to cut your hair or not, but just for the record, theres like 100 or more (?) people on this board with long hair willing to give you suport.peace
