Ok, I don't get impressed easily, but today I was. Today was the first time for the new choir of my junior college to sing, and while they were waiting to go on stage, I noticed one of the young ladie's hair. . .She had it done in a half-ponytail, but there was no ponytail holder. . . .this naturally intrigued me, so I asked her about it, and she showed me how it was done: Take your hair like you're going to put it in a ponytail, then lift the ponytail and grab a small lock from the bottom part of your hairline (far down on your neck). Take this lock and wrap it around where you would normally have a ponytail holder, don't have it too tight, then when you are about to the end of this lock, tuck it under the previous loops and pull it tight. I tried this and found it to be very effective; it held almost all day.
Then I took it a step further and figured out for a day in which I wanted to look rather formal, I could put the lock into a braid, then use the braid to wrap the ponytail. . .this too held for a couple hours, before I took it down to get ready for bed tonight.
Just really nifty, and convenient for those of us similar Vincent who dislike anything artificial (like elastic bands).

Could you post a picture? You've totally lost me on this one.
Sorry, I don't currently have access to a digital camera. If you e-mail me I can reply in more detail there.
TBG,
How many times did you wrap the lock around the ponytail?
About 2-3 times, it depends on the length of your hair
What I sometimes do to have the same look is to use a ponytail elastic, but then wrap around (hide) it with some hair and anchor this wrap with a bobby pin so you can't see it. (Which I guess defeats the point of not wanting to use hair accessories, but it looks natural and is easy to do.) I used to do this mostly when I was a little girl and playing tennis but now that there are so many natural looking colored elastics it's not so much nessary.
