Hi all,
I think I have nice hair, but I never have experimented with it. I wash it, brush or comb it back--parted where my cowlick is--and it dries on the way to work (frequently with the windows down). When it starts bugging me (right about the pictured length) I get it cut.
What usually bugs me is it starts feeling out of control (not that I try hard to control it), it retains heat and it feels funny around my ears and where it curls at the back corners.
Anyway, I just started thinking this week I ought to try it long sometime, and it might as well be soon. I started searching the internet and found this message board. I think a lot of my questions have already been answered.
Just to be sure: all I do is just don't cut it, right? What about the thin hairs at the back corners and near my sideburns? Just let them grow, too? I'm never sure what to do with my sideburns...I usually have them shortened at cutting time and then seem to unconsciously lower them as the hair gets longer.
I guess I'll experiment with different styles as it grows...it looks like most guys part down the middle as it gets longer. Is that out of necessity or personal style? I'm also curious to see if it's just as wavy if I brush it straiht down instead of back. And I'll try some things to hold the annoying bits in place.
By the way, my hair is fairly dark but will highlight and lighten in the sun. It's hard to tell in the picture, but I currently have natural highlights just above the front of my sideburns and on my big bangs swoop, and I haven't really been outside that much. I'm curious to see how it streaks/lightens as it gets longer. My imagination has it very much like this guy's hair: http://the-light.com/longhair/messages/81281.html .
I think my last haircut was 1-3 months ago, and it was pretty short, tapering to very very short at the back especially on the neckline. The top was a tad shorter than this 3-year-old photo: http://bigmoney.gotdns.com/personals-pics/me.jpg .
Did any of you feel odd looking at photos of guys and thinking "ooh!" when you first started this? :-) I kept looking over my shoulder when browsing pics earlier at work.
By the way, does anyone else have a big head? Those "one size" caps barely fit me on the last hole with short hair, but when my hair gets to this lenth the caps are a bit tight and tend to pop off because the "long" (for me) hair lets them slide up. If I stick with letting my hair grow out I expect I may want to wear caps to keep my bang ends out of my eyes when they reach that length.
Thanks! Glad to have found this board.
Yep.
Back hairs at the corners - just let 'em grow for now.
Sideburns - trim 'em if it moves ya. You can do that yourself.
All the above means you will not now be visiting barber shops. If that's become a habit, break it. [grin]
Gravity sees to that. Once your hair gets longer, it will weigh more and that means it will naturally fall off your head from each point in the direction that goes down the quickest. This decision of nature one could also say is a matter of style, since as you said, it's an element of style that many of us share. Almost always, when you see a man with seemingly short hair and a center part, you'll then realize he really doesn't have short hair - he's a longhair with it pulled back. Thus, looking for center parts is one way to help one spot other longhairs.
Happy growing!
Bill
Welcome to the board! I agree with everything Bill posted/replied. Just let it grow. For someone who's never had long hair it can be an interesting journey, and sometimes a frustrating one. If you want it long, start realizing it's going to take quite some time, depending upon your desired length goal. We're all here to help.

Welcome aboard!
This is my first go-round as a longhair and I couldn't imagine ever having short hair again. I say go for it!
And like you, I also have a very large cranium. Before I grew my hair out I had to be fitted for a wig for a play. The wig guy measured my head and said it's the biggest he's ever seen. I guess I should be proud...dunno. Having long hair and a big head hasn't been an issue for me, although it's been difficult to find hats to get me through the awkward stage. (The few hats I have are all size XL.)
I've been trying to find a place that specializes in hats for guys like us. When I find one I'll let you know!
Cheers,
Jeremy
