James,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on your question. I've been away from the board for a while.
In short, I most probaly use a shampoo with SLS. In fact the last one I did contains SLS.
OK! I should have asked the question in a better way.
I received this envelope from a couple who are on a crusade to warn people about the dangers of carcinogenic subtsnaces in consumer products and one of the pamphlets mentioned SLS in shampoo.
Now this couple gives talks, which I have not attended but I can more or less guess its to sell some alternative which they will claim is not carcinogenic.
My question then is: How bad is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate in shampoos and is there any real truth about its carcinigenic properties?
Charles
Probably no worse than getting too much sun without sunscreen, smoking or chewing tobacco, using a LOT of saccharine, breathing too much gasoline exhaust, eating a lot of fatty foods and not eating enough green leafy vegetables, drinking too much alcohol, blah, blah, blah... you know the story... somebody has determined that almost *everything* is carcinogenic. I'll take my chances with sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate, ammonium lauryl sulphate, et al.
Hmm! In fact I quite enjoy that reply. I smoke, drink once in a while, lack exercise, I have run out of Equal so I must go down to the pharmacy for more. But I try and cut down on the fat and I doo eat plenty of veg.
After having been around some of these health purists, I've realised how finickey they can be at times. In fact I think a lot of it is an attempt to be chic and vogue?
Charles
Sls is definitely bad.It dries up hair.I had lots of bad results with it.Sodium Laureth and ammonium are both mild cleansers although the ammonium lauryl sulphate is better because it is slightly milder and leaves no residue. It depend on how his chemicals were manufactured. The ammonium lauryl sulphate extracted from petroleum(also known as petrochemicals) might not be good as the same chemical extracted from an organic coconut.I would stay away from the whole pantene line for the silicones they use.I like the Aveda line.
There are two that I like to use - switch 'em out every now & then...
1. CitréShine Revitalizing Shampoo - leaves my hair feeling smooth, even without using a conditioner, although I generally use CitréShine Reconstructing Conditioner along with it. The conditioner is great for getting rid of any tangles.
2. Pantene Clarifying Shampoo - I use this about once or twice a month, just to prevent any buildup of gel and/or conditioner.
The one conditioner that is a "MUST HAVE" for me is Infusium 23 Leave-In Treatment (Original Formula). I've used this for many years.
I favor Clairol Herbal Essences shampoo (colored/dry hair formula)... it smells nice, doesn't dry out my hair, and leaves a nice, light feeling to the hair. I also occasionally use Pantene shampoo (for when I feel like I have buildup; it's a bit more powerful but also more drying).
