Hey,
I'm suffering from chronic back pain and my doctor won't prescribe anything. I've been forced to drink to deal with the pain. this in unlike anything iv've ever expererienced. What do you say to the doctor to get him to help you? PLeeaase help me~
Stanley,
What kind of pain is it? Is it muscle and/or tendon? If it is soft tissue, find a certified massage therapist in your area. If you have trouble, email me off list and I will help you find one. IN the meantime, put ice on the painful area--20 minutes on, and 20 minute off. Do NOT put heat on it, as that can cause more damage to muscle tissue. You can use the ice as long as you want as long as you do it in 20 minute increments.

also a national board certified massage therapist!
It's all in the muscles. God I don't know what to do.
I've sent you some things you can do, immediately, to your email address. If you will send me some more details, I can help you find someone who can work with the muscles. I think it best to do this off the board. Click on my name above to get my email.

Hi Stanley, you may want to see a chiropractor. They can work miracles in relieving back pain and they do it without medication. Also certain yoga stretching exercises can be helpful. Absalom
I'm not doctor but how long have you had it? Can it be kidney or gall stones? Where do you feel the pain, specifically?

Do you think you've strained it by sitting at the computer for too long in an awkward position? I'm not really on the computer long enough these days to get back pain anymore, but 2 years ago, I was only 15, the bottom end of my spine was screwed from sitting at a desk that was too small for me and broken.
I used to (and still do) lay on the bed, or floor, stretch out, relax, and do some Alexander Technique.
A good patient-physician relationship is an important component to good medical care (I should know...). Perhaps your physician didn't fully understand the nature and severity of your pain. Perhaps his perception of your pain isn't as yours. In any case, go see him again to iron it out. If that doesn't work, then it's time to find a new physician.

Can you get another doctor? If you're insured and living in a populated enough area, you should be able to find another one without leaving your "network".
If a 2nd opinion isn't possible due to cost and/or lack of in-net coverage you might consider alternative medecine, but be careful with it. Accupuncture is generally harmless. Chiropractic has mixed results and the potential to do some harm if the practitioner is unskilled and "manipulates" you the wrong way.
Drinking yourself into numbness is certainly not a good long-term approach, but the bottom line is you need a 2nd opinion and of course: IANAPhysician.
Get yourself down to a good shoe store. One of the causes
of back pain is your shoes may not be fitting right.
(I know it sounds crazy but it has helped some I know who
have bad backs.)
You might also want to check out your local new age store.
They may have knowledge of people in the area who
can help with back pain.
Also check your retailers. In some areas they have
stores that specialize in products for back pain.
Doctors have no way to measure how much pain you are in,
if your doctor is not helping look at alternatives and/or
look for another doctor.
Finally you may want to check out the internet and
look for fellow back pain suferers.
I've had back pain. Mine was a pinched disc and I had to have surgery. Put it wasn't in the muscles - it was a shooting pain down the back of my leg.
Some back pain has to do with not drinking enough water, or drinking too much caffine. It makes your kidneys work too hard. Also if you drink too much Gator-Aid when you are NOT working up a sweat - again your kidneys have to work overtime to filter out all the salts / electrolytes.
The best medication I've found is 2 "Alieve", or up to 4 "Advil". Read all the warnings...
Stanley.
I hear this statement a lot. To misquote Moe in the Simpsons, 'Beer is not the answer.'
I found chiropractic manipulation succeeded where other interventions failed. I'm not clear whether your pain started suddenly (e.g. through lifting something heavy)which could mean a torn muscle or injury of the spine/discs. I don't know how the health system works in the USA - can you not ignore your doctor and go to A&E instead ?
In the meantime, just take non-prescription painkillers as others have suggested ('Always read the label').
You're not having the best time of your life at the moment are you ! I do hope everything improves for you.
Best wishes
Laurence
PS Your hair is several times nicer than mine.
When you are "buzzed" you might think you have controlled the pain - but you will soon find that things will become worse and worse - (not talking about other effects of alcohol - just the pain itself)
The method you are using will not work.
(Just a thought - but isn't "being forced" to drink a worse sin than growing your hair long - I thought there were religious probs mentioned by you before).
All alcohol and caffeine should be removed from your system.
