I have had relatively short hair all of my life. To be honest, I was getting kind of bored with it. So, I decided to grow my hair. Let me give you guys an update as to where I am so far:
-When my hair is wet I can part it in the middle and it will stay like that until my hair dries.
-If I pull on my bangs, I can barely see my hair.
That is pretty much where I am at right now with it. I have a few general questions regarding the process:
1. I can't exactly have a "hairstyle" because of the awkard length. What did you guys do when you were at this stage? Hats, headbands, etc.?
2. When do I start getting it professionally groomed?
3. How long does the "awkard hair look" last?
4. What do girls think of your long hair? Have you found that women are noticing you more or less with long hair?
There's many different awkward stages when growing ones hair out.
I myself tried to make my hair look as neat as possible and just toughed it out i still do the same today now that i've been growing my hair for almost a year and a half
As to when your hair groomed. I've seen and heard that many people let it grow past their shoulders or wait for a year or two before they get any type of grooming
Like I said earlier there are many awkward stages while you are growing your hair out but you can do things to make it look not so awkward like using alittle mousse or something.
As for the girls many like men with long hair. They like to run their fingers through it and play with your long hair.
I hope this helps you out a bit.
Good luck with your hair growing,
Mark
I had short hair too, I started growing my hair last october, so it's been almost a year. What I did at first was to gel it back with the "spikes" look. Then when it got longer I parted it to the side with a blow dryer. After that it all went to hell and I just had to wait a few months before it looked slightly better. I think you'll start leaving the awkward stage or, getting better after 7-8 months. I couldnt wear a hat because of school they dont like them, and I could care less about what the whenches think.
Welcome to the board, and the hair growing process.
At your length, My hair absolutely sucked. Check my link for progress pics. The three months one is the pic I'm referring to.
I think this was THE toughest time for me. I gelled my hair until the 2 month picture, then it became too long to gell the bangs up, even with hair glue, wax, AND gel! Your hair will sure suck right now, but it will look much better soon.
Maybe 18 months+ into growing. Try to resist trims right now.
Something like 14-18 months from your last haircut
I have found that girls love my hair. A good proportion, the ones I usually hang out with, love my hair, they told me they want to braid it and do pig tails when it gets longer. I would definitely say women are noticing me more with longer hair than when it was very short.
Forgot to include the link.
I used a lot of gel and hair spray, and I made a hat out of "sweat-shirt" material to hold the hair in place until it dried / crured / solidified. It was like a beanie with a 3-4" dia cut out on the top front so my hair wouldn't be plastered flat in front. I've used bobby pins, which I tell people are calle "Paul Revere" pins!
Don't trim it at all for at least 18 months! It only prolongs the awkward stage.
By 8 months you can get enough into a tie to make a pretty good tail, and the rest can be controled by hair spray and pins.
I'm happily married (my wife didn't like me growing it out at first - she likes it now), and see it as a plus that some women will not like my look - less chance of them making inappropriate advances.
As far as what other people think - I'm active in church, choir etc, and at first was worried what people would think / say. The first time I was up front with a pony-tail was a little stressful, but it passes. It helps to have a sence of humor about it - encourage friends to give a tug. Also the best defence is a good offense: I see a friend who just got a haircut, and I tell him "Grow your hair out you skin-head!!!", and then laugh.
