Hey guys,
This violates my goal of not cutting my hair at all, but I'm considering a maintenance trim. I haven't had a problem with it in the past, but lately I've noticed a lot of split ends. My thinking is that by trimming I'll be able to grow it out more. The question I have is how much do I trim...1/2", 2", 4"? I'm also not sure if I should cut it the same length all the way around. By doing that, I'll be losing a good amount of length...possibly 4 inches. I may wait until it's even longer before I do that...I'm really liking this length.
Any comments and advice are welcome!
Keep it growin'!

Hi Brett.
Well if you're thinking about a trim, I would say you should should only trim 1 inch off the ends, just trim at the bottom of your hair it'll clear off a lot of the damaged ends.
Don't try and even your hair out in one go. Instead just have a series of 1 inch trims every 3-4 months, over the course of a year you'll have "evened out" your hair, and (assuming you haven't reached terminal length) your hair will still be 3 inches longer at the end of the year. Also if your hair is evend out the ends will look much thicker which will make your hair look longer than if you have fine wispy ends.
So the net result would be positive.

My hair is similar. It gets blonder and thins out as it spreads out below my shoulderblades. I've grown it to terminal.
What I'm saying is you may not get much more length than that, or if you do, it may be more sparse than the stuff up top. If that is the case, you have to make a decision: Do you want hair that is longer and more blond looking but which thins out at the ends? Or do you want thicker darker hair that ends higher up, and looks bushier around your head but does not look as "longhaired"?
As I said, I've opted for terminal. I like the sun bleaching that has taken my hair to blond, and I like the spirals it has that go to pointed tips like corkscrews. Trimming corkscrews would leave chopped off spirals (yuck), unless I cut way up to where my hair was so thick no one would see the individual spirals. I don't see a lot of guys with hair like mine, so I feel my mane is unique. I like that. But your mileage may vary. :-)

Do NOT cut off four inches. No matter what.
If your hair is like mine (and many others), you'll never really achieve the "same length all over". The hair in front for many of us grows slower and never as long as the rest.
Besides, there's nothing wrong with your hair the way it looks now. I think it looks great as styled now.
If you need a trim, by all means get one. If you lose a half an inch or an inch, that's cool. Your hair will look better.
I lost SEVEN inches in early July (thanks to a boneheaded move on my part). The shock of the loss is still with me to this day! It'll be quite some time before I see waist length hair again...if ever! You would really regret anything more than an inch.
Lose the spilt ends and keep the length. That's my .02!
