Ok. . .yet another one. . .I've been thinking recently about what people did before elastic ponytail holders. As I posted earlier, they may have used a small lock of (still attached) hair to tie around the ponytail, or they may have just let it go loose (many from way back had natural dreadlocks).
Well, one more thing they may have done. . .just used a small piece of string or ribbon (yeah, it's one of those "duh" things, but I never thought about it much before) and actually tied around the ponytail.
Anyways, I've been experimenting with different things to keep my hair back besides the elastic ponytail holder, and have been enjoying the self-discovery.
So far, I can keep my hair back by. . .
1.)Putting it in a single braid (almost all of the hair stays in it firmly). Because of the nature of my hair (very curly) it stays in the braid without anything to fasten it.
2.)Using a lock of hair from my neckline in the back as a hair tie. Works good for a little while, but hair isn't quite long enough to stay that way for long.
3.) Using a string or ribbon to actually tie it. I'm considering using a black ribbon once my hair is a bit longer (like Redleader's current length) for formal occasions. I've also used a hemp string necklace with a Thor's Hammer amulet on it, centering the amulet on my ponytail as decoration.
So anyways, I'm just about ready to stop using regular elastic ponytail holders. . . .in a few months once my hair is a bit longer.

Wow, cool :o) I hope you will post some pics of your hair in these styles.
Btw, your hair is getting pretty long hey?
Thee Longhaired Gal
About 12.5 inches currently.
I'll post photos whenever I can. . . .don't know when that will be of course. . . ah well.
I like the idea of using just a string or ribbon to tie off a ponytail, but for me, unless there's an elastic band underneath, no such tie will last more than a minute or two, 'cuz my hair is super straight, and it will just slide down, no matter how tight.
However, there's a trick even straight-haired folks can try for tying off braids with just a ribbon or string. What you do is weave the ribbon/string into the braid for the last inch or two, and then it won't fall out, 'cuz it's braided into the braid itself. You have to practice a bit to make it work.
BTW, I think dark bows in men's hair for holding ponytails is a romantic look that evokes images from the late 1700s and early 1800s. :-)

You won't catch me with a bow in my hair. I'm secure in my masculinity and my sexual oreintation and everything else. But a bow? No!
I may be in touch with my feminine side, but not THAT much in touch with it.
I think that something being feminine is more in how the person projects themselves. For example, there is this way of wearing a bandana that my sister kept telling me would be feminine if I were to try it, then I tried it, and it didn't look feminine, and haven't had anyone say so either.
Ribbons are probably the same way, it just depends on how you carry yourself with it.

D'oh! I forget that there are straight-haired people out there, lol! Goes to show how we define reality based on our own experiences.
