I have read a lot of praise for propecia on this group. However, propecia is not without its side-effects. But I have read on the internet that "Saw Palmetto" is a herb which is one of the strongest known natural blocker of DHT. Also, it does not carry the usual side-effects that propecia does, and is much cheaper. It is available commonly as a supplement. However, no scientific studies have been published yet that conclusively prove its benefit for hair. So has anyone tried it yet? or has come across any reviews?
Thanks in advance!
Hi, sorry I cannot comment really on the effectiveness of finasteride over saw palmetto. However, if you are looking to block or inhibit the formation of DHT, in conjunction with a DHT blocker such as saw palmetto or finasteride medication, you may be interested to know that there is a popular range of products called Nioxin which also claim to inhibit or block DHT formation in the scalp, there are reviews avail as well with the range, which seems to get positive response. Androgenic propecia can also be treated with over the counter meds such as topical minoxodil which can be enchanced in effectiveness when used in conjuntion with topical tretinoin meds (tho I think this would be more appropriate for significant loss of hair i.e baldness in area's). I would imagine that Minoxodil also has fewer side effects than taking finasteride meds as it is topical so would impact less on the prostate gland etc.
Many people are undecided over the effectiveness of Saw Palmetto. Some people say it works great for them, some say it helps a little, some say it has no effect. The general opinion on hair loss forums that (for beginners) if you're young and trying to catch MPB early, the natural way is the best way to start out. If that fails you can move on to the 'harder stuff'.
As for Propecia - you have a greater chance of success with that. As with SP everyone reacts differently. It may or may not work for you.
Matt
I've been taking it for quite awhile. I don't seem to be losing my hair (I hope) but that could be just genetics.
My main reason for taking it is because my father died of prostate cancer and I thought it would be a good idea to take something that help my chances. I was aware of the possible added hair benefit so that made the decision easy.
I have heard palmetto is good for hair, but never heard about it being a dht blocker but it sounds pretty good, since Ive been considering adding it to my daily routine. My only question now is what dosage of it would be good? GNC seems to have so many different forms of it.
Thx.
May I ask what "DHT" is...and how does it affect the growthof hair...my inquiring mind wants to know! Thanks, Jon.
DHT is the chemical which causes hair loss in men.
5-alpha reductase + testosterone = DiHydroTestostorone.
