Picture Purged
Hi,
This is a first post for me and really have enjoyed reading all the messages and downloading the beautiful pics. I have had long hair and also very short hair and love trying different things. I really like the idea of having the length of the hair hidden in a bun such as Gollan does. I have only seen this once in person on a man, and it intrigues me. I am wondering how many guys reading this wear their hair occasionally in a bun or perhaps wear it mostly in one. I imagine wearing mine in a bun for years as the hair inside gets longer and longer. Please comment.
Hello Rusty,
Welcome, I am glad you have spoken up. I have always thought buns woefully underused by men. Every once in a while I get to put my guy's hair in a bun but there is so little hair that it just does not work well, although I have been able to make a quick temporary one when his hair has been loose and wind endangers his hair. Buns really are practical for getting hair out of the way and protecting it from tangles. Also, unless the bun rubs against a collar or back it is pretty likely to look as neat at the end of the day as when it was made. As much as I love the look of a braid it does have that shaggy look over time that a bun avoids.
The bun is also delightful for the ability to conceal hair. Since the thickness of hair varies from person to person it can be a difficult thing to accurately predict the length of hair tucked away in a bun. I think you would enjoy the secret of knowing how much hair you have grown that no one else gets to see unless you choose to honor them with a rare glimpse of your loose length. You will even startle yourself when you let your hair down having forgotten how long it actually is.
To see a traditional male bun style (pictured) you might search out sites with Navajo men. From what I understand the folded hair is wrapped into a long bun rather than the close fitting bun style that may be more familiar. Long hair on men has not been a rare thing over time so I am sure other masculine buns have developed in cultures around the world.
Elizabeth, who is wondering both how long your hair is in back on the photo (a hidden ponytail perhaps?) and the occasion for which you were dressed up :-)
Hello Elizabeth,
You have been so kind to have answered so many of my questions about buns for men. I think you really went out of your way. Yes, my hair is long and with the tux it was in a braid about 2/3 down the back. I was dressed in a tux for a concert I was singing in last Christmas. I am thrilled that you wanted to know!

Oh Rusty, responding to you was easy because it was a subject I am fond of. Hairstyles should be based on the needs of the hair and the desire of the wearer rather than any made up cultural customs. Well, that and you reminded me of my boyfriend because you look so endearing and friendly.
Glad to hear you had long hair in your photo. I bet you impressed some people that night showing how long hair really dresses up a tuxedo. ;-) When writing I forgot Victor's own hairstyle page linked below and where the photo above came from. It has two intricate braided/woven buns on men that really look dressy. No clue though exactly how something like that is made.

Thanks again Elizabeth.
That statement reminds me of a lady I worked with several years ago. She was about 55 years old and appeared to be quite conservative. She always wore her hair in a bun.
One day I just decided to ask her how long her hair was, as you could not tell with the bun. She said something like, "why tell when I can show!" Well, she let the bun out and her hair was all the way down to her ankles. I was blown away! All of us were. I found out later that she was far from prudish and conservative. Turns out she had several tattoos, a belly button piercing, and was very laid back and liberal. Completely different from the image she portrayed at work.
Proof positive that a bun can really, really hide length. I would have guessed her hair to be mid back.
I like buns too, the first time i ever saw one on a guy though was in Gollans pics. And i fell in love with it, and as soon as my hair is long enough i will be wearing one quite often.
I wear my waist length hair in a bun quite often. It's usually that or a braid, as those are the best ways to keep it from getting tangled.
