1. Is there anything made that is like a hair tie, but without that terrible metal clamp? Like a rubber band, but vinyl/not rubber. Occassionaly when I use them, a hair or two gets caught in the metal part and breaks off. My hair is almost to pony length, and I dont entertain the idea of wearing those floofy scrunchies.
2. I have been reading and posting on this site since early this year (under several handles as I tend to forget what I had used the last time I posted), how do I become a member? I tried posting my info with a pic, but I suppose it never was read.

1. Yes. They sell non-metallic hairties all over the place, man. Try a small everything-is-sold-here store like Walgreens or Wal-Mart.
2. Maybe a higher-up can take this one? I have no idea.
Hello BMac yes there are hair ties out there like the ones that you were explaining. In fact Suave the company that makes shampoo sells them. Look at your local wal-mart for them or if you have a Dollar General store near you look there as well or at any store that sells hair ties and such. Or even on ebay if you are a registered member.
I can't help you on the becoming a member part sorry.
My absolute favorite hair ties are made by Scünci. They're called 'Soft and Light' hair ties, and that's really quite true. All they are is some kind of piece of stretchy fabric with both sides rolled up. Therefore, no metal on them at all. They're brown in color, too - as my hair is brown, they blend in well, though I don't know what color yours is.
One thing to avoid, though, is the Scünci hair ties that have plastic closures on them. They look to me like the ends of the hair tie were just melted together somehow, instead of a plastic clamp. But even though you wouldn't think so, they can cause damage, because those plastic parts are hard and not very flat at all, so they can still catch on your hair easily. They also break really easily, so they don't last long. I've been using the 'Soft and Light' ones for a few months now, though, and have never had one break.
So there's my (overly wordy) product recommendation for you. Look for 'em at Walgreens, or any store like that.
I use the small, thin ones, personally.. but mine are a different brand completely. :) Everyone makes these things nowadays, so you can likely find them at any local chain store (Target, Wal*mart, grocery store, etc...)
I wish I would have read this earlier. I just picked up some from walmart...the kind with the melted together ends. So far I like them better than my previous ones with the metal. Except that they are larger and require an extra wrap around. Has anyone tried those flat looking ones? At least they are very cheap so I dont mind buying something better if I find it.
Well, I've used three different kinds of hair ties from Scünci:
First were those round ones with the melted ends.. Second, the flat ones, which I think are the ones you're talking about. Black, described on the packing as being flat to prevent slipping? Those have the melted plastic ends, too, and they break just as often as the others.
And then the brown ones now. They're actually somewhat flat at first, and they really aren't very prone to slipping at all. I can leave one on for a good ten hours without having to adjust it once. The only thing that might cause inconvenience is that at first they're a little tight.. Then they get to the point that's just about right (for me, anyways).. And then they get too loose and slip out. At that point, you could probably triple wrap them, but it's probably easier to move on to a new one by then.. They stay in good shape for a long time, though, from what I can see.
What are these flat ties that you are talking about? I don't think that i've ever seen them in stores.
Mark,
If you check out the "Scrunci Link" post below, you will see a photo of the product I was referring to.
Rather than the round, narrow diameter pony tail elastics, these are flat, fabric covered elastics. They are extremely durable, hold pretty well in my super-straight hair, and do not leave behind as pronounced a "dent" or imprint when removed.
I found them in the chain drug stores in the US, stores like CVS, Riteaid or Brooks Pharmacy.

Ive been using these a few months now and I love them! Ive got wavy hair and regular ties are a real hassle to be twisting around, not to mention damaging. The way these work is without metal, and rather than being a regular loop that has to be wound several times, its a really large loop you just put it on and tighten it as much or as little as you want. Its kind of hard to describe but if you check out their site at www.bunjii.com you can see what I mean. These are especially great for when peoples hair starts getting really long, like waist length.
I just cant stress enough how much better these are then ordinary hair ties.
The bunjii online store has been shut down!! that sucks!

and here is my progress
Nice progress ! :o)
Hey, no need to use scrunchies!:)
Why not get the pontyail band, cut the metal part out of the tie, and tie the band, using your fingertips, back together. I just tried it and it works fine. If you are left with too much length at the end of the knot going in either directions, just simply trim it until it isn't noticable. You are left with a knot, but not half as bad as having a metal plate breaking your hair:)
Is floofy a word?
