I am 16 and I have really thing hair, when I spike it up you can see the top of head pretty easily. I want to grow my hair out somewhat long.. like chin length, and I was wondering if my hair is too thin to do this? when I try to part it at the lenght it is now ( 2-3 inches) my hair looks really thin, but when I pull it down it doesnt look as bad. SO I just want to know if I should keep it short or if it would look of to grow it out. I have a picture of the longest my hair has ever been. I think its kinda hard to tell how thin it really is in this picture, but anyway.. thanks
Your hair looks thick enough to me...
Infact everyone's hair looks thin when spiked particularly when viewed from above. Personally I think you'll be fine.
But there is only one way to find out: Grow it and see!
I agree.
I'm pretty new to this board but I don't think you'll find anyone here who'll recommend keeping your hair short. My personal recommendation is to keep your hair at whatever length you're most comfortable with. I've never heard of anyone having a problem growing chin-length hair. I have heard people say they can't grow it past their shoulder blades though.
Everyone I've seen with spiked hair has some part of their head showing, that's a given. How's about posting the longest hair pic or one of your hair spiked if you have one? Anyway, your hair looks great and I wouldn't worry too much about at this point. Rock on and keep it long. Bruin
Go for it. My hair is thin too and I have just longer than chin length hair. It has been growing about 13 months now. It reached my chin at about the 1 year mark. The only thing about my hair that bugs me is the temple region. While the rest of my hair is denser, the hair above and in front of my temples is practically on its own, scraggly. But that's my personal hairline.

Trust me dude, thin hair (or fine hair) is not a bad thing. "Thinning" hair is bad. There's a difference. :D
I have thin/fine hair and it's really easy to get it to behave, as opposed to people with thick hair. Its very easy to make it very silky. Enjoy it!
Actually there are people here who think long hair is not for everybody. But in your case, my friend, grow it out! Spiking yoru hair will make your hair look thin no matter what because your scalp will show. Besdies, even if your hair actually was thin, it wouldn't be that big of a problem. You might find it easier to manage, in fact. Thick hair is usually pretty tough to style, so you could consider it an advantage to have thin hair.
Good luck! Check back with us if you need anything else!

Time is on your side. Give it a try!
I too have fine hair, which made for a short "awkward" stage and drying time.
I have thin hair (also rather fine and wavy) and mine is approaching my waist (it reaches my waist if I stretch it out!). It may not be the ideal hair type to grow long, but never mind. At chin length you shouldn't have to worry about tangles and split ends.
Hi Elektros. I used to think I had thin hair, but now I don't know. If I separate a strand, I can easily see it and feel it in between my fingertips. Is that characteristic of having thin hair? Or is it more likely I have coarse hair? Also, does he mean thin hair length as in the diameter of the hair strand, or just not much hair on his head?:)
Thanks.
Surferdude,
I'm not Elektros, but I did have a thought on this matter.
Based on that description, I would say, "no." You do not have fine hair.
There is another long hair web site that uses their own standard for hair type, consisting of appearance (straight/wavy/curly), texture (fine/medium/thick), and ponytail diameter. This gives participants a way of comparing their hair type with others. The web site lists methods to determine hair texture and I believe one of them was the method you used, in that a fine hair cannot be easily sensed when rolled between your fingers.
Yes, I can't remember that website but I checked it out before, thats where I got the finger method from. I suppose it's quite coarse, because my hair does not react bad at all to silicones, what I am against is putting artificial things in my hair, and dimenthicone is used too much in most conditioners and shampoos. Thanks.
Thin means not a large number of hairs, often measured by ponytail diameter, whereas fine means each hair is narrow diameter. At least, that's the excepted terminology. I'd say mine is both thin and fine, although not as thin or as fine as some. Yours may be quite thin overall but medium as to the individual hair size.
Thinning of course means something else again, i.e. one step removed from balding! All guys eventually get some male pattern baldness, but the vast majority never reach a stage where they would be considered bald. Normally the hair just recedes slightly at the temples and thins slightly at the crown. The rule of thumb is that if it is very noticeable before you are 30 you have a problem.
Having thin hair, or even fine hair, is absolutely no indicator of thinning hair.
I should have said noticeable in those particular areas (the temples and the crown)

Welcome to the board. I have right about the same length hair you have. Glad to see other people close(r) to my age are coming to post here.
Join the "patience" crew and you'll be just fine.
The pic below shows ya how long mine is. I have another one with it all spiked up, but I decided to post this one instead.
Thanks everyone! Im going to grow my hair out..is there anyway to tell if my hair is thinning or just thin? because its really thin and I get worried sometimes. Nether my grandfatehrs nor my father are bald.. I dont know if that makes a differece. thanks
