Hello,
I'm 39, and determined to grow my hair long before it decides to fall out.
A problem I've always had is that my hair is very, very thick. As it grows longer, my head starts to get really "poofy." Soon, it looks absolutely enormous.
What can I do with my hair to stop the "balloon" effect as it grows longer?
I have very thick hair as well, and about the best thing I have found for reducing the volume is: more length. The longer my hair has gotten, the easier it has been to control. The additional length helps weigh down the hair and hold it down. A shorter-term fix would be to minimize shampooing and use lots of conditioner, which also tends to weigh hair down.

I've got the same problem, so I use a gel or grease to keep the hair slicked back and nice and long at the same time. This way my hair doesn't "poof up" and it's got a great "long & slick" look to it.
The only problem is that when my hair's this long, I go through quite a lot of gel since you need to put in a lot of it right from root to tip. Remember to use the "extreme hold" stuff because when it gets long, it's very easy for it to fall out of place.
Hope I could be of help.

Same problem here - my hair is very grey and coarse. When first growing it out from a short cut, it seems to just get BIG instead of long. I use a strong-hold gel to keep it under control. Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner also helps to smooth the texture a lot.
