Picture Purged
I've been growing my hair for about 10 months now. As you can see from the picture I have rather poofy and wavy hair. Is there anything I can do short of damaging straightening methods and messy gels to keep my hair in check? I'll post other pictures in follow up posts, I have no clue how to print more than one at a time.
Hey John,
From the pic you posted, I'd say you have pretty thick hair. It probably needs a little more length before it settles down. The length creates the weight which then keeps it laying more flat. So hang in there man. It looks great. Josh
Thanks very much. I don't plan on cutting it for a good long while, probably at least six months, and even then only to even it out. Yeah, it's really thick, and even after brushing and styling it it doesn't stay that way for long- just turn on a Megadeth song and my hair is everywhere.

Just wondering if you use Conditioner, either after you shampoo or any leave in stuff? It can really help calm your hair and give you more control.
That said you're in the middle of the awkward stage, so what your experiencing is not uncommon, but you can fight back.
What's your hair like besides been thick, poofy & wavy?
Dry? Brittle? Soft? Oily? We can probably suggest a product which will help you control your hair.
Occasionally I use conditioner, but usually not. My hair is soft, and it gets oily if I don't wash it at least every other day. I'm honestly afraid of some conditioners after hearing the effects they can have on hair.
OK Then to to reduce the frize & poofiness I would suggest you use a conditioner everytime you wash your hair.
Washing stripps the hair of moisture and natural oils which protect it from damage caused by combing brushing & styling. This can lead to dry, poofy hair. But if you have naturally oily hair, then let it do its job, you'll probably find that within a few days without washing your natural hair & scalp oils will build up a little and help condition your hair.
So basically:
1) Try Washing less often, say twice a week.
2) Use conditioner when you wash, you've nothing to fear from using conditioner twice a week, it will not cause a build-up or damage your hair. The only time people get problems with conditioner is when they use Conditioners (which contain Silicones and/or Proteins, which cause build-up) too often.
Sorted
For 10 months, your hair is looking really good. The pony tail looks especially straight-up longhair... how long was it when you started?
I'd say two and a half, maybe three inches. Only once in my life have I ever had a true "buzz cut".
A lot of that is in the gene pool. But in order to have results you will have to intervene with some sort of treatment or product. Be it a straightener (chemical or iron) or some sort of gel or mousse. I might suggest a reverse perm which uses perm solution to straighten your hair rather than curl it. You will have results w/ minimal hair damage.
Thanks,
Dan
I've considered that and decided against it. First of all, the cost is too high. Second, I don't want anything more than extremely temporary. I kind of like the wave in my hair, it's just bothersome at this length. When my hair can be, say, cut even at a little past shoulder length, I might want some of that wave.
