Hey All,
Being a licensed hairdresser if anyone has any questions regarding styling tips or products I would be more than happy to answer any and all questions you might have. Feel free to email me as well.
Happy Growing,
Dan
Thank you for your kind offer.
Please don't think that I am attacking you, as this is not my intention, but I would very much like to know why so many stylists take it upon themselves to ignore the wishes and instructions of their clients and cut off far more than the owner of the hair asks?
Other than that, do you have any views on hair extensions?
That is a common problem out there in our community. Unless I find it totally needed I do not cut more than is asked. When I feel that more needs to be taken off I consult with my client before I let my shears do the walking. To be blunt there are just a lot of chop happy stylists out there. I have won a great many clients because I do as they ask.
As far as extensions go I think they look great if done well. I myself do not do them.
Dan
Good to hear what you say - you're obviously one of the good guys!
Thanks Man!!
Hi Dan
Well we'll certainly value your contribution, feel free to chip in whenever you like and reply to any of the questions here on the board. You don't have to wait for people to ask you directly.
However I have got a question, I'd like to ask a professional stylist, though its not about styling or products. Its about artistic creativity.
As a stylist how do you reconcile creative instincts with the desires of your customers? As a web designer, I'm always battling with my clients "unfashionable and unworkable" ideas of how a web site should look against my own ideas of what will be functional and exciting.
I often am forced to let my creative juices flow on personal projects rather than on client work. As a stylist how do you manage to express yourself creatively? Most people are reluctant to let their stylist be overly creative with their hair, so where are your creative outlets?
Do you (stylists in general) get any such opportunity or are you forever frustrated by having to work to other people's ideas?
I ask because we never hear this point from the stylist's perspective. Only from clients who are unhappy that their stylist has run amoke with their hair.

May I offer my perspective as a stylist?...
As a stylist I am sometimes in conflict with clients' "unfashionable and unworkable" ideas of what they want for a style against what I think will work best and look best for them. But, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, whether my "creative instincts" are accepted or remain "suggestions", the desire of the customer is what he wears when he leaves my grooming center. (That attitude/fact is what brings him back!)
As a stylist I am not the least bit stifled--I have several creative outlets. First, I have a group of about a dozen guys who allow me complete creative liberty with their personal image/hairstyle. I reciprocate by providing creativity within the parameters of their personal preferences (whether they prefer long or short, high maintenance or not, lifestyle, occupation, etc.). So, basically, for whatever I want to do creatively, I have a guy who will allow me free rein. Second, my styling endeavors are photographed and published in trade journals nationally and internationally. That gives me recognition among my peers. And, thirdly, there are hair shows, grooming workshops and styling competitions. All of these venues provide an outlet for my creativity.
So, while admittedly I am "occasionally" frustrated by having to work to other people's ideas, in no way am I "forever" frustrated.
First off thank you for the kind words. What I do when I have a client in the chair is I try to assess their personality and then I know how far I can go with any creative ideas I might have. If I see they are more on the conservative side I will cut their hair as requested but maybe push the envelope on the blowdry. This way it's not a permanent change for them. I do have a few clients who let me "go crazy" if you will. they definitely help. For the conservative client I will make suggestions to them and if they go with it fine if not that's fine as well
Like B.R.Gallagher I do try to attend shows whenever poss. They are a gold mine of ideas. I hope this gives you an idea of the outlook from the other side of the chair :-)
Thanks again,
Dan
I've seen guys have their hair in a tail and all of their hair has a very high sheen to it. No frizzies. It's not greasy looking. It looks very well managed and very well cared for. I've tried many different products and can't get my hair to do that. So how do they do that?
they do that?
Some of that is in the gene pool. I have had very good luck with a product called "Silk Therapy" Available at JCPenney Salon or if there is a Smart Style salon in your local Walmart. A little pricy but a little goes a long way. Also Matrix makes a spray called Shine Renewal. It comes in a small clear spray bottle. This also works very well. Give those a try and let me know.
Thanks,
Dan
Thanks. Also, what do you recommend for making fine hair more fuller.
Any mousse should work..provided it has no alchohol. Again a little goes along way

Dan......How can I get a hairstyle similar to this......my hair right now has alot of different layers..Im thinking about getting it straightened and colored.
You can straighten/color. This style is achieved by a lot of layering and a lot of hairspray!!
What can be used to color facial hair??....Lets say I wanted to go from a reddish brown beard color to a darker brown or black???
Thanks!
