In my first post on the hyperboard I mentioned wanting 'shoulder length' hair. Then the awkward stage hit and I was just looking for relief from hair poking me in the eyes. Be careful what you wish for because my next wish was for relief from hair getting into my food while I was eating! Yuck. I don't miss those days one bit! A ponytail - *any* ponytail was one awkward stage wish. Then I wanted enough length to wear a ponytail cuff. The classic 'low ponytail' was a milestone for a long time but when it happened it hardly seemed important. While my next hair goal is 'belt length' my next milestone is a wish to have *all* of my hair stay put behind my shoulders when I'm just walking around. Right now it mostly stays put but as I move a lot of it will bunch up on my shoulders and some of the shorter bangs will flop to the front. These later milestones don't come as fast as the early ones and they aren't nearly as important. Still, to me it is more fun to look forward to reaching a milestone than it is to chart my progress on a tapemeasure. So what is *your* next long hair milestone?
The waist, here.
As a newbie with short, curly hair, my next milestone is having hair that actually moves when the wind blows.
You'll get there... and beyond! I did and it has been worth every frustrating moment, every unsolicited and negative comment, every Bad Hair Day. Just keep reminding yourself that it will take a long time.
When I started growing my hair out in November, I couldn't wait for it to get in my eyes, and I still don't mind it in my eyes. Don't worry man, as long as you resist cutting, you WILL reach the milestones. My hair reaches just past my bottom lip, and I never thought I'd get there, but I did, everyone does.:)
I suppose it's being able to have it all in a ponytail.
Come to think of it, my next milestone is getting the hair from the top of my head to reach my chin. Not very far off. *Then* I guess it's the tail.
My next milestone is for my bangs to reach the lower part of my nose when i pull on them, and for the hair in back to cover more of my neck, and for my hair to completely cover my ears. I'm hoping to get to that point when the cold weather hits, so that it will be like a blanket on my head!
By the way Gollan, how's the Jojoba Oil Treatments working out?
Actually they are working *very* well. From past experience getting just the right amount of Jojoba can be tricky. I think I have figured out the 'magic' (to use an engineering term) to conquer my frizz and make my hair shiny but not too greasy. I've been *very* happy with my hair the past few days. I will say that the change to much drier weather may be a contributing factor.
Good to hear that it's working so well! Also, do you put it in after you shower, like a gel or a leave in conditioner, or do you put it on overnight and wash it out the next day?
I put it in after I wash my hair (instead of conditioner). I also put it in at night before I tie it up for bed. A few drops in the palm of my hand, rub my palms together then run my hands over and through my hair. When my hair is wet I do this twice.
I can almost get my hair to stay behind my shoulders unless I move around then the bangs and some other ahir comes back over so that would be the next thing I would like to get passed. Next I want my hair to drape completely over my arms like passed the bicep almost to elbows.
Midback, then near waist.
To let my hair lay down again. Much of it was cut off in February and though it is longer again now, its still huge when it's down. It'll be good to get some more weight to it.
For those who are confused by this, I have very curly hair so it afros in the shorter stages.
Hey, at least I can tie it in a ponytail.
Hey man, I felt your pain. . .my hair still does the fro thing to a certain extent if I have it down when the wind's blowing. . .and my hair's over 13 inches long!

Gollan,
We are roughly at the same place, your description of hair "almost" staying behind back fits me too.
Same goal as when I started - terminal length.
PS - your web page is great, it's a fantastic record of growing long hair and probably an inspiration to others. :-)
My next milestone will be when I can lean my head forward (as in putting my chin to my chest), and you still can't see my neck.
I'd also like to be able to put it in a respectable looking braid (it doesn't look all that great right now. . .it's too short)
Anyways, those are mine.

Growing back the hairs on my forehead hairline which I (in a fit of complete stupidity) cut off about a week ago...grrr
Overall, to get my hair to mid back (currently at shoulder blades).
My next milestone is being able to put my bangs in my mouth, then past my chin, then a semi good tail with my bangs almost reaching it , ill just put them behind my ears.( i think my milestones are pretty small/close together)
Well I'd love to get past the awkward stage. Just to the point where the bangs are curling up and the front is in my eyes. I love the feeling but hot damn it is messy... and not entirely very good looking.
sighs... So I guess we all have different objectives depending on where we are. Although I don't think I'm aiming for much past shoulder. Assuming my hair looks like something at that length
my next milestone is definetaly have shoulder length hair... I know its still not long enough for some of you in here, but thing is, the 90% of short haired people consider shoulder length hair as long hair, even though for some of us its not "long" hair. also at least in my case, ackward stage is over just behind having shoulder length hair.
For myself, even though at almost full mid back I am waiting to cross that milestone as I hope to reach waist length unless "terminal" prevents.
I have no intention of ever cutting my hair again. As Ive mentioned occasionally, my hair is thinning on top. Should I live to my 70s and beyond (90s run in my family); I suspect there will be nothing up there but shinny. However, the back and sides are thick, healthy and turning a beautiful silky white like my grandfathers did. I truly believe someday my White Tail will indeed be striking.
Having long hair has been a totally personal pleasure that has been surprising on many levels of appreciation. I now look at other men and women through a different eye and see a deeper beauty. I have an understanding of how much effort some people put into their hair care. And through the close-knit community of this board (arent we just a delightful group !?), Ive come to realize that the longhair experience goes so much further than appearance; from social commentary, to sexuality, to independence and for some, a spiritual commitment.
Most of all, I enjoy the way my hair looks and feels. I hope to keep this ride going Thanks to all for being here and sharing. I enjoy having my morning coffee and evening tea with you !!
You don't have to accept increasing baldness. Propecia is a wonder drug. And now, it has even been shown that long term Propecia use decreases one's risk of prostrate cancer! Get this stuff. It really works.
I might need that then, my grandfather recently died of Prostate cancer.
He died in February, not like in the last few months, just wanted to point out.
The low/loose pony. I would like Ill my straglers to grow out so the dont stick up when the rest of my hair is down, if that is at all possible (with constant breakage and all).
Hmmm... good question. I think I want to have long enough hair to be able to wear any ponytail style. I don't have a serious problem wearing a standard-position pony tail right now, but I need longer bangs and I want to be able to wear my pony tail higher, samurai style.
...Gollan! My next milestone is to have my hair hit mid-back (about another 8 inches, i.e. at least another year). Hopefully, at that point, my hair will stay behind my shoulders for the most part. Also, I hope my hair will be more manageable. Your hair is looking great!
Good question.
Having achieved my goals of terminal length and 10 years without a trim, my only real goal is never to cut or trim my hair for the rest of my life. As my youngest grandparent died at 83 and my parents are still alive at 86 and 81, I hope I might have another 30 years or so. As I had my last trim in 1994 when I was 39, I ought t have a realistic hope of living to 78 when I will have not cut my hair for half of my life.
My Next Milestone has to be a 100% safe low ponytail.
Presently my bangs still fall out if I get windswept or if I play football.
Sorted
I think my next milestone will be when my bangs pass my jaw. I wish they could catch up with the back, as it's already past my neck and creeping down my back by the day :)

So what is *your* next long hair milestone?
My next Milestone will be for my bangs to reach my chin. And maybe (less important) being able to put my bangs in my mouth, which I'm NEARLY there:)
Right now, my hair hangs to my waist when it is wet. But, because it's curly, it only makes it to mid back when it's dry. My next milestone is to have it hang to my waist when it's dry.
I was going for shoulder length, then I got a trim, now I just want to be able to have a nice ponytail of any kind again, then to be able to have a long braid down to almost belt length, but that's a lofty goal with wavy hair:-)
Matt
I've passed chin length...shoulder length...my hair is nearly at mid-back lenght and below nipple length in the front...but my next milestone will be when I can feel my hair resting on the backs of my arms. That'll be cool. It's just about starting to get there too. After that I'm looking forward to my hair continuing to my elbows. I really like the way it feels too!
Keep it growin', y'all!
Brett
Hey Gollan!
I really would like it if my hair would always stay tied back, no matter what the conditions or style of tail (strong wind blows it out , especially the day /day after I wash my hair)
Ideally my goal is to get my hair so it all stays back over my shoulders out of the way, like you said.
My hair flips and waves into my face quite regularly so when it is another foot or so longer I hope it will get a little straighter!

Knee length which is not far away. Absalom

Wow, I was just searching for whether or not trimming is helpful (my friends are threatening a haircut this sunday) and I was surprised to find this whole community of "longhairs", and some of them quite serious about their cause... I never took my hair too seriously, I just decided one day I wanted long hair.
My ultimate goal is terminal length, and a great milestone will be when I have longer hair than my friend-who-is-a-girl, if it's possible. She's at about mid-low back right now.

Although I can't wait for "butt" length, and "sit on it when you forget to move it to the side" length!
