Hey guys,
Well, I'm really excited about my latest achievement, there's a story that goes with it.
On September 30th, or Thursday, I woke up with my hair in the worst state it's ever been in. My bangs was just a mass of curls, not even remotely wavy, just completely and utterly curly, a complete shambles. The sides flipped like 160 degrees straight up in the hair, revealing the bottom of my ears, the top was mostly wavy, but the back was just as bad as the front!! And what made it worse was I had to be in school, and I could NOT mitch! (Important assignment to hand in)
So when I arrived at school, everyone was commenting on how curly my hair was, guys were randomly coming up to me and pulling my hair, and some people were giving me quite a hard time about it, my friend said she'd bring in a hair straightener any day next week if I liked, to straighten my hair, I would be a fool to refuse!
So basically my day was hell, and I left school at lunchtime. Later that day, my sister came up to my house and I asked her if I could borrow her hair clarifying shampoo, as I figured I may have a protein build up from my current shampoo or something, my hair was behaving completely out of character, never had this before. Let me just remind people here, she doesn't think I'll look good with long hair, she said I looked better with it short and styled, I totally disagree anyway. Now the next bit hurt.
She told me I had an obsession with my hair, because I care for it too much and buy the best products, and she refused to let me borrow her clarifier (could be jelousy there). Ok I was pretty annoyed by now, I told her I'll just use the Apple cider vinegar rinse. Basically, the arguement went on for another half an hour, when I said, my shampoo isn't working right.
Cut a long story short, as this is getting very long, apologies!, she brushed my hair back, put some leave in conditioner in, supposed to help straighten my hair, and told me to tuck my hair behind my ears while she blow-dried it and combed it backwards. That's when I realized ALL my hair would stay behind my ears! When I looked in the mirror afterwards, I just looked...different than usual.
SO, next day, I went to school, with my hair behind my ears, almost all my hair was straight, my friends and people just didn't know what to say, they were all stuck for words. Even the guys who tried to put me down about my hair growing were speechless. Then later on, did all the compliments come my way!. Poeple said how cool I looked, that long hair definitely suits me, how I look much better and nicer:) The chicks, well, they just totally digged my hair:)
In only a space of 20 hours, I had completely changed my look:) Today I went to my local city with my hair back behind my ears, occasionally I had to readjust it, but it was a cool day.
On Monday, it'll be my eighteenth, so I'll try and get a few pics posted then of my hair:)
I'll be wearing my hair tucked behind my ears all the time from now on until it grows longer.
Thanks for reading.
Comments welcome:)
Hey Surferdude! I'm glad you're happy with your hair and I can relate to the curly part of your hair. Mine does it as well, but I guess, me having longer hair, it doesn't really show up that much. And yes, I also tuck my hair behind my ears whenever they are hanging loose, just to see better, otherwise it's in my face. :o)
Anyways, all the best with your hair! Can't wait to see the progress pics.
Thee Longhaired Gal
Lol, same here, always in my face! It becomes particularly annoying when a teacher is 'telling me off for being so bad'-and at nearly 18, is not the kind of thing you'd expect!
BTW: That smiley is great!:D
Thanks!
I LOVE it - keep it growin' dude -= and don't lissen to nobody -
Can't wait to see the awesome pics of you wit you longer hair.
Thanks! I think I look better with the hair tucked behind my ears, but maybe I exaggerated how cool I look. I don't want to dissapoint anybody mind!!:) But ppl were impressed!
Awesome! It's good that you found a way to sidestep the awkward stage at its worst, especially with wavy hair. You're lucky, I might say :p Indeed, I look forward to pics. Keep up the good work, and don't slack at the piano! I'll be updating my website soon with more (and better) recordings, just so you know.
Yea, guess I have!:) What used to be horrible was the last few weeks when I couldn't leave my hair alone, because it was always in my face, and quite curly, and just embarressing.

I really look forward to your piano recordings! Concerning the piano, my school music teacher is refusing to teach me any more piano, he saids that he hasn't got the time, and that he normally charges for them. I'm begging my mam for piano lessons, but with Grade 8 violin exam coming up in 2 months time, I really need to concentrate on the violin more than anything else. The fact that I have just bought myself a Nintendo Gamecube and a copy of 1080 avalanche does not help me either!:)
But when I am in school, if I have a free lesson, or during my lunch hour, you'll usually find me either hanging with my friends, or at the piano in the music room, well, until my teacher finds me there and tells me to leave.
You know, if you ever need advice with any instrument, even outside of the piano, I know a good deal of stuff. If you ever need help approaching something musically, etc., then feel free to contact me. It would be a great pleasure to discuss music with you, and I'd like to talk to you about more kinds than just classical. =o
I'll email you soon.
Congratulations on your discovery and milestone. There will be bad hair days and good ones. Ever consider wearing a bandana on the bad hair days? I see a lot of curly-haired young men wearing them around the university. I prefer apple cider vinegar as a clarifier. I don't doubt that clarifying shampoos work but it is hard to get a grip on using a shampoo to remove shampoo residue. You know the next step with getting your hair behind your ears is that it gets so long it won't all fit! Good luck with your studies and your long hair goals.
Thanks!

Hmm, good question. I HAVE a bandana, I bought last month while in Spain, and I followed your instructions on your website, in tying it, thanks for them! I haven't worn it out in public yet, though.

Yea, there's some horrible chemicals in some clarifiers, I was only going to try it once just to see if it would work better.

Wow!:)
Good luck with your studies and your long hair goals.
Thank you very much Gollan!
I use cider vinegar on my hair once or twice a week, and I've never had buildup from any -cone product I use. It's harmless, and I think it's much harder to get buildup off than to prevent it.

Pony tail next.
I discovered this on myself too. I only tuck behind my ears mainly when I'm eating dinner! Sometimes I just tuck one side behind my ear. Heres pic of me.
As your hair gets longer you probably only be able to tuck a certain amount.
All the best

Way to go bro! lol I dont think Ive said that ever before :-p
Naa but really, its cool that it stays back as everything becomes so much easier and less annoying!
My hair would have been about 6 inches longer if I had waited an extra few months the first time I tried to grow my hair so I could have tucked it back. (I didnt - I had it at grade two back 'n sides for a while until I realised I wanted long hair again!)

Lol, I feel I have many 'bro's' on this board now.
Definitely! If you check here on monday, I'll post a few pics!
Ouch!! I think the first time I ever thought long hair looked cool, but didn't think of growing it then, when I was 9 and saw Power Rangers the movie. Tommy had great hair and great personality.
Good work man! Glad to hear that things are working out.
Funny isn't it, how a good thing can come out of a bad one! And this applies to most everything in life, as well.
I look forward to seeing your pics. Question: Do you always use a leave in conditioner?
Thanks Sid! Yea, I always use a leave in. I use Sunsilk leave in conditioner for kinks and frizz after I condition with Aussie Mega, and shampoo with Sunsilk for kinks and frizz
Congratulations! This is a great milestone all in itself. It's amazing what a "little" think like this does to how people see and respond to you. And, happy birthday!
Robert
Thanks Robert! Yea, lucky my sister and I had that argument really isn't it!:)
Surferdude,
Your story was really good. You'll find that as your hair gets longer, you'll have more stories like it. You'll start noticing the way it blows around your lips, hits your shoulders or falls on your back...every few weeks you'll find another sensation from your hair. Enjoy your journey and keep it growin'!
Brett
Thanks Man! Now and again, if my hair isn't too wavy, I do feel my hair brushing my nose and top lip from time to time. Things can only get better:)
That's fantastic man!
I'm so glad you feel happier - this is the start of all the good stuff. Next it's the ponytail and it just gets better from here on in. As I think I said before, it's like hitting the middle of the awkward stage - being halfway through the woods and being able to see daylight on the other side. Until now you've probably been feeling it just looks messier by the day, and harder to control. But now that you can do something with it, it just starts to look better every day instead of messier.
I've been so much happier since my hair fitted behind my ears, although I also use the topkot to keep it out of my face. Oh, and remember you can have the whole 'hair behind the ear on one side, but not on the other' thing going on now lol
Great news. Look forward to those photos, and an early Happy Birthday! (I have terrible memory and will probably forget to say later, lol)

Hmm, I thought I posted once, it must have got caught in another reply or something!!??
I wrote a long reply lst time, but really all I want to say is thanks a lot for your advice!!:)
Hey Surferdude
Great news...............and yes, along the way to growing long hair every little achievement is a super milestone to get excited about.
Actually, this whole "growing-out" ones hair and having it look the best possible along the way is one heck of an "Improvisation!" (And there are more ahead............just be a bit inventive as you go along.)
You have stuck it out so well Surferdude. Bravo! You have really great hair and will never believe the rewards at the end when you reach your goal.
If you think you are excited now.............just wait! :-)
Justin
Thanks a million for your nice comments, Justin! I can almost see the end of the woods. I never thought my hair would turn out like this, and I am so happy it has. Also, my hair is starting to get really thick now, like every month it feels MUCH thicker.
Congrats SurferDude!
Quite a Milestone... keep growing!
