I'm a 49 year old man with long hair (18 inches plus). ... Right now I "manage" it by tying it back in a loose ponytail. However it might be practical but not always as neat and "professional" as I'd like.
I just dont know how to make a braided ponytail on my own. I mean I know that its possible for someone to do it on their own ... but i dont know what the secret is.
Any advice, hints, tricks or instructions would be GREATLY appreciated.
There are several of How-Too Braid books and web pages available. The Webmaster here can probably point you to a few. As for me, I learned to braid with three lengths of shoelace. First while watching, then with eyes closed, then behind my back. It's harder with hair because you have to keep it divided into three parts.
When I braid my ponytail, I start with two or three "stiches" behind my head and then drape the hair over my left shoulder and continue in the front. Much easier on the arms!
Actually the searchmachines is how I found this place ... but didnt find any how to braid page :)
Here's one that was posted on this board a while back.

I had the same problem for a long time. The problem with doing a single braid by yourself is that when you first start out it often comes out slightly crooked to one side. (At least it did for me) What i've found as alternates and it is good for practice is to do two braids "Indian Style" (or Willie Nelson) this will help develop your technique for braiding. Another similar alternitive may be to do your hair in a 'pony' as usual and do two braids out of that. These are both intresting styles and work really well for me. Even if you can't use either of these in a working environment they are still practical for around the house stuff and braiding practice.
Good luck
