Hi,
I know I posted on this subject earlier, but I don't believe I asked the right questions. I need to know what to do (and what not to do) when I find that some of my hair has become tangled. It's very tempting to try and pull it out, but I just feel that this is not good for my hair. However, I am hestitant to leave it for fear that it will become worse. I had this problem this morning, and couldn't get my hair apart without being rough when I tried before and after washing it.
Also, although I don't use a "de-tangling" shampoo or conditioner, I have seen them. Would using one of these products instead have a great effect on solving this?
I really feel I need to make some kind of change soon or I won't be very successful in growing my hair long. It really drives me crazy.

Dont' stress it bud. First, think about how it gets this tangled and try nipping it in the bud. Brush your hair regularly and if your daily activities might cause tangles then tie it back or braid it or something. Washing *and* conditioning every few days will help make it easier to brush which will help prevent tangles. I've found that leave-in conditioners are wonderful too. Is your hair possibly damaged and that's what causes the tangles?

When you encounter a tangle when you're brushing, stop and very carefully untangle the knot. Use your fingers, if necessary. Try not to get frustrated and tear thru it because it's taking more time than you're used to. You may have to change your routine from now on to add some more time in the morning and before bed to thoroughly detangle. Detangle once or twice more during the day to stay "on top" of those tangles. Long hair takes more time this way, because if you don't want to rip it out or break it off due to hard handling, i.e. if you want long, beautiful hair, then changes have to be made to accommodate the hair's needs. Certainly the hair isn't going to change how it behaves for our convenience. ;-)
Good luck,
JE
I seem to remember from a previous post of yours that you have curly hair? If so, knots and tangles just come with the territory. I don't brush or comb my hair, the only detangling I do is in the shower once or twice a week when I have conditioner in my hair. ThermaSilk makes a great spray-in/leave-in detangling conditioner. I used it for a while, and it works great, but just wasn't worth the money IMO. But hey, if the tangles and knots bother you, I'd say use some detangling conditioner, and when in the shower with conditioner in your hair, take the clump of knotted hair and gently rub in between your first finger and thumb. Then gently start extracting hairs from the main knot, one at a time, which shouldn't be too bad with the conditioner.
Good luck

Hello Rick,
I would say while you are in the shower/tub take a wide tooth comb with conditioner in your hair and comb the conditioner through your hair evenly distributing the conditioner. But go kind of easy making sure you do not go too fast or do it too hard. I find that helps me keeps me from getting alot of tangles. (I have really wavy and curly hair) And I also wear my hair in a loose type of bun when I sleep that also cuts down on the tangles for me. And for the really tough tangles just use your fingers to get them out. Like others have said a leave in conditioner will help out. I don't really like them though I got some Infusium 23 it works ok but it makes my hair look and feel greasy. Which I don't like. But do as the others have said brush your hair throughout the day and put your hair in a ponytail or bun or even a braid when you are doing things during the day and night and that should cut down the tangles tremendously.
Good luck,
Mark
In a nutshell YES!!!!
I suggest finger combing your hair before you go at it with a brush or comb, gentle the separate the hair strands with your fingers before combing/brushing, then brush/comb gently, never tearing through the knots.
Start at the tips of your hair, comb out the ends and gradually work up the hair shaft, this tip is more relevant as your hair gets longer.
