Hello, I've been growing my hair out for 9-10 months now and I'm thinking about getting a trim. My hair on the back of my head seems alot longer than the hairs on the top, so it looks like I have a mullet. Would it be a good idea to trim the back a little to even it up with the top?
Another question is, how long does it take to grow shoulder length hair? Thats the length I'm trying to grow my hair at.
Thanks.
Sean,
I took the approach of no trims at all until my hair was actually past my shoulders. The reality is that in the midst of the awkward stage, which it sounds like you are, there's not much you can do to make your hair look great. This is a stage to get through. If you trim, you may get a temprorary neater look, but your ultimate goal will be put off further down the road.
I would say not to trim, be patient, and in about 9 months you will see it all very differently.

Ans. question #1 It's normal for hair on the top of your head to be a bit shorter than the hair in the back. Mine is starting to even out after 17 months of growing. But If I were you I would stay away from the trims. I haven't had a pair of scissors touch my hair since I started growing mine out and don't plan on it until it is absolutely necessary.
#2 It really depends on how fast your hair grows. It varies from person to person really. The back part of my hair is almost down to my shoulders. Like I said i've been growing it for a year and a half. But my bangs and hair in the front is a bit shorter they hang about an inch or two below my chin. It is only around 10 inches as opposed to the 10 and a half inches in the back.
So I would say just keep it growing and not have any trims only if it is necessary to snip off split or damaged ends. And the front of your hair will even out eventually.
Good luck with your growing. And I hope to see some progress pics soon.

Mark
Not really Sean. Just let all grow and it has a way of catching-up with itself in the end. A "trim" will just put you back.
About 1-1/2 years average I would say. Getting past the shoulders without all the drastic flips seems to last forever if you ever decide you desire this length. (Oh say between 2 and 2-1/2 years.) After that it is the easiest ride of all as the hair just seems to do everything right.
