Hi!
I currently have short hair, but I would like to grow it out. Would it be better to have a hair cut and start growing my hair out at one length at a time at the top and shaved at the sides and the back or should I just let it grow out the way it is.
Grow it out as is. If you keep cutting part of it, the process will take *much* longer. Grow it all at once and you minimize the difficult phase.

Hello MJ & hello all,
I'm not so sure of this. Growing it all out at once may not be the best way to get to Longhair status. The intermidiate phase, aside from being a real pain, can also be very career limiting. I have found that as long as you look neatly trimmed and groomed, then most people will give you far less a hassle than if you look shaggy and unkempt.
Growing out your hair all at once will get you there faster but will be a much messier process. What I have been doing is to let the hair up at the front of my scalp grow uncut whilst keeping the hair at the nape of my neck trimmed more often. I have also had the hairs over the middle of my head thinned. This has served to let the front catch up with the back more quickly and keep the volume down so my head does not look "poofy."
This has meant that it will be longer until I acheive the Longhair look that I want. However, having some hair down behind my shoulder blades, while the rest is too short to put into a tail, does not do me much good from the appearance sake. I think it better to balance the two.
Good luck in any event and try and stick through the awkward phase. I started growing my hair out from a shaved scalp back in March of '98. It is just barely too short to effectively put in a tail now. Come about this August it finally started being long enough though to have some shape up front. Now it is getting long enough up front to stay behind my ears. More or less.
Your mileage may vary etc., but keep on trying for the length!

It all depends, I suppose... I took the opposite tack, actually. I have had long hair in the back for years, and starting this January have grown out the rest, which is now about chin-length and just getting to where it will stay back out of my way, and actually looks one length when pulled back. So basically I went through two awkward phases... growing out the back, and growing out the rest. In retrospect, I really wish I had grown it all out at once. But as with everything, to each his own, and good luck in any case.
