Well Nick, as someone pointed out, there are many ways a man can wear long hair that look good (like models).
I am 17, and Heavy Metal is the 3rd thing in my life after Football(Soccer in U.S) and school, and women, ok fourth. (only when beautiful)
There are a few thing i can suggest:
The first is based on my personal experience: If you natural hair colour allows, highlight it, it looks, if well done very beautiful, and it gives your hair that model look. I have even been complimented at a job interview about my hair, it was a woman, go figure.
Number two: You must face this reality... No matter if you have highlights or not, hair till your back WILL GET YOU NO JOBS, you must get it cut, it must not be longer than you shoulders.
Pay a lot of cash on hair products, conditioners etc...
Hair is not a piece of s.hit, it is a reflection of one's own self image.
From experience, it helps to have good looks, caus if you look like a killer to begin with and then grow long hair, you will scare people away.
I hate this society, especially American (i grew up in Eastern Europe), and i know what you mean... Social "norms" and crap...
I think that society's trends are like a train, the ones influenced are on it,and the ones against it are in a car on the tracks (us, longhairs, heavy metalists), we can try to stop it but it crushes us.
That is why i live up to the stereotype. We might as well thrash things if we can't change our image.
We have a gift, we hate norms, and so did all the people who changed the world.
Back to you Nick. When going out in the forrest of society, tie you hair back, keep it clean, colour it, make it nice for youself not for the wankers of "socitety". Get a good job, then grow it long and try to sabotage all the computers of your company.
My father always said: " Give them what they want (=cut your hair short), get close to them, to your ennemies, and then f**k them over.
Use a litle gel to keep the fly away hairs in their place.
If you have any other comments, please share them with us.
Jeez Gandalf! With that sort of attitude, I'll bet you are a scream at weddings! ;P
I like your suggestions about the highlighting and I can see your points about maintaining a good appearance. I have done much the same.
At almost three years into my current job am I only now secure enough to really start growing my hair out. I started with this company as a temp back in April of '97 and did so with a nice corporate buzz cut flat-top. Back in January of '98 I felt comfortable enough with my position here to try bleaching my hair out to blond. That was an experience. I kept that for a month. In February of '98 I decided to shave my head as the roots were coming in and I didn't want to go through the bleaching again.
The shaved head bit was fun - for a while. It was too much to keep up so it only lasted a month as well. On March 1st, 1998 I started growing my hair out. It has now passed my neck in back and passed my chin in front. Still in its problem phase but begining to hold its shape otherwise.
I have not received the bad press or scorn that you seem to have. I guess that is one of the advantages of living in Southern California and working in a high tech field. Still though, I think approaching life with such built in anger is bound only to create more of it. At the least it doesn't help dispel the myth that Longhair=bad people.

My site. Warning! Bi/ gay content. Nothing X rated, just that I like men too!
I agree with this. Make your hair as beautiful as you can. Approach your dealings with others with confidence. I think for the most part, if you feel and act as though your hair was the most natural and beautiful thing in the world, others will tend to accept it also. (Remember how easily the Storm Trooper's minds were influenced by Obe Wan.!) :)
I haven't found this to be the case. I've had no problems finding work with long hair of any length, as long as it looks really neat.
( I do however, have a good reputation in my field, and that may help)
Yes, use the best you can afford for your hair. Go to the hair sites like the Hair Boutique and read the product reviews. It will be worth the time and effort.
Good Luck

Oh, to be 17 and have ALL the answers! You've got a LOT of growing up to do little boy.
Tell you what *I* hate: snot-nosed, grungy longhaired adolescents who hate America. Since you hate this country and its society so much, why don't you get your sorry ass BACK to your backwoods Eastern European piss-ant country and "thrash" it? There must be *something* good about the U.S. since you and/or your family felt compelled to come here.
I second that motion. Personally, I don't care for grungy longhairs of any sort... they make the rest of us look bad. My feeling is, if you aren't willing to take care of your hair, then cut it. If the first thing to pop into the mind of the 'average Joe' when he thought of long hair was a skilled, mature professional, rather than a whiny grungy kid, I doubt we would have nearly as much discrimination to deal with.

Amen to that.
