I have straight dark hair past my butt. I have noticed "less" hair on my temples or hair lines when I put my hair in a bun. When hair is loose, you can't see the "less hair." Is that normal because other than that, my hair is the same all around and keeps growing and male baldness doesn't run in my family. Thanks.!
I too have noticed the same thing. Hair not quite as dense in the temple and forehead area. If I let if down it is not apparent. Also, I keep getting new growth so I know my hair has not stopped growing. I guess it just does not grow quite as thick in these areas. I hear scalp massage might be beneficial in that it brings more blood to the massaged area thus promoting growth. Don't know if that is annecdotal or scientific advice. Also, it may very well be that this is unavoidable as we get older. Not as many hairs per square inch as when we were pups. I try not to worry about it. I just look at the overall picture and count myself among the lucky to have as much hair as I do.
While it does no harm, it's not particularly effective either. If there is anything 'sinister' behind what Crazy Hair describes, massaging the scalp will be useless. Circulation has to be really poor before it affects hair growth, I think.

Matt, my comment regarding scalp stimulation comes from George Michael who recommends that upon rising, the first thing you should do is flick your hair forward, with your head hanging down, and brush your hair from the back of the neck all the way to the end for about 20 strokes and increasing this number over time as you progress. This will carry your natural oils from your scalp all the way down the hair shaft. He also stipulates that the hair brush should be made only from boars hair as it most closely resembles human hair. It also will absorb some of your oils (which is why he also recommends that you never share your brush). AND, as you brush forward, press down on your scalp with the bristles in order to stimulate blood flow. The reasoning behind brushing first thing in the morning is he contends that after lying in a prone position, for however long you sleep, there is more blood near or in your scalp than at any other time of day. He also is a strong believer in scalp massage. I offer this in the spirit of information dissemination and not to be argumentative. I have no idea if scalp massage helps one bit. I will say that the bristles running across the scalp really feels good and it really does move the natural oil along nicely.
I appreciate the fact that you were just spreading the info, I didn't intend to come across as "You're wrong, this is how it really is....". I was basing what I said on a hair loss point of view only. Every hair loss forum/info site/doctor says that poor circulation in the scalp is very often wrongly assumed to be a cause of hair loss.
I am sure that George Michael is correct in his advice, considering the structure of the hair follicle and blood vessel etc. :)

My apologies for sounding like a Mr. Knowitall. I was not trying to be adversarial. Your point is well taken. I do not know if George Michael's advice is intended to help restore lost hair. It is likely intended to be a method of promoting hair growth and hair health to someone that is not experiencing hair loss. I'm the one that got off track. George Michael has some unique ideas about hair. I don't know if any of them are backed up by scientific method or only his assertion based on observation and experience. He was a practicing physician in his home country before he immigrated to the U.S. so his knowledge of human physiology could serve as the basis for his ideas. I will do more homework to find out if he has any ideas on helping to restore failing follicles. :)

Thanks to everyone for the replies...You people are great and keep it growing! Peace.

This article does not come right out and say that scalp massage will help restore lost hair, but it does make some compelling arguements.
You mean like this? I think this is normal. My hair is *thin* not *thinning*. It has always been this way.

Thank you! That is what I've needed to know. My girlfriend tried to tell me the same thing. I went through the 'thinning hair paranoia' for a while and she brought out some old college pics of me and showed me it was all in my head.
The male hairline is different in the fact that it is more 'cornered' at the temples, as opposed to the female hairline being more rounded. It can then be said that some women have much less hair coverage than men. It is just more noticeable on a man if the corners seem a little more bare.
Hey, thanks for the reply...actually not quite. I guess I have nothing to worry about. I do have hair in the area that you don't have although your hair in not thining, that happens to the the pattern of your hair and my friend has the same hair pattern as yours and I never thought about his as thinning. It's exactly like yours. My hair is not as dense there is some people but I have seen women and men with hair like mine and I'm still in my 20's and I know age is not always relevant to thinning hair. I guess I don't just fine. Thanks and keep growing!
