Hi there...i'm 17 and I'm growing my hair out (wow). I have 6 months to visit the barber and my hair are getting longer but I'm going through this "bad hair" fase. I mean that my hair look like s**t...:( (i hope my msg won't be deleted for this). Even though it's straight, it begins to get over my ears and it doesn't stay behind them, the bangs get in my eyes, etc...many guys, especially relatives say "you don't look nice" "cut it" , blah blah blah. What should I do? I mean do I let it get longer or go to the barber to do something to look better? And if i do so, how will I look, i mean I don't want to look like a jerk! What did you guys do?
Having your hair cut will only delay this awkward in-between stage... you'll either have to deal with it right now, or later when the haircut starts to grow out again.
Try using a strong-hold gel to help keep your hair slicked back and tucked behind your ears. As for your bangs getting in your eyes, that is a really annoying problem that I don't have a very good answer for. Again, you could try a strong-hold gel to slick your hair down, or mousse to give them some lift, or maybe spray it (although I'm not a big fan of helmet-head hairsprays, myself, but it might just do the trick). What I did was wear caps as much as possible during this phase!
Best of luck to you!
Ditto to what silvermane said... you might wish to consider a bandana as an alternative to a hat- though baseball caps are popular & would serve your purposes quite nicely. In about another year alot of your hair will fit into a ponytail.
The best way to deal with the comments is absolutely no reaction at all.. most people will drop it if they find they can neither push your buttons nor browbeat you into getting it cut. There will always be someone close to you who will try to get you to cut it... this is where you get to show them what a patient and self-confident person you are. Allow them to say their piece then calmly reply, "thank you for being so honest with me, but for now I intend to continue growing it out." If they say anything beyond that interrupt them, smile and firmly but very politely say, "The subject is closed." Anyone boorish enough to pester you after that isn't worth the energy to argue with. Just ignore them.

This is exactly what everyone said to me and I cut it from the pressure. Mine was past my chin. Ive noe graduated from college and Im goin for my third attempt. Thing is, youll never know how you look till its completely grown out, a very hard lesson Ive learned twice so far. Just do it.
Use a good, strong gel and gel it back. You'll be able, with the help of gel, keep hair behind your ears.
I've been using gel to get through that phase until my hair got almost shoulder length. At that point, I entered college where nobody gave a damn about my hair and since my hair was long enough, I just stopped using gel.
Also try using mousse, if you don't like gels.
Thanks...i might use gel to hold them back and hope that it will get better someday! But when I said "go to the barber to do something with it" I didn't mean to have a haircut, but to cut it a little to grow better and more straight...anyway...I've found a way to get it out of my eyes putting a little gel on it.Now it isn't so straight as it used to be (it looks like hooks!) but what the hell
Since I started growing my hair out from a buzz, I've had the front growing back to the crown. Once the back got long enough, I started letting the sides and back grow. Now I'm using gel and a small ponytail in the back. The gel really does work, even if your hair is very fine. LA Looks is a good buy for the money. I'm hoping in about six months to not have to use it at all, but for now it's fine. Good luck!
I was in the bad hair phase a couple of years ago, and used Pantene's styling gel for about 9 months. It doesn't damage your hair, doesn't feel greasy, and really works well.
And whatever you do -- DON'T CUT YOUR HAIR! Even a "trim" is going to hold back your progress to get out of the bad hair phase. (That was the best piece of advice I picked up from this board when I was in your position.)
Good luck!
