Picture Purged
Believe it or not I think my hair is kinda missing my old Cone filled shampoos, I didn't seem to get half as man fly away strands from my hair.
Take a look at the attached picture.
OK I'm much happier with the way my hair feels since I switched to cone free shampoos but, there is something to be said for Silicones, they hide a lot of imperfections.
Infact, by the end of the day, my hair can be a frizz of short-flyaway strands, so many infact that I'm concerned it could be damage rather than new growth.
To this end I have a question, most of my short fly-aways are twisted and wavy strands which crop up around my part and look quite ugly. They don't appear to have damaged ends, but the fact they are not smoother and straighter like the rest of my hair makes me wonder. Admittedly, they are 1-2 inches long so they don't have another 10 inches of hair pulling them flat.
Is it damage or new growth?
The photo shows mimimal frizz, but I washed/conditioned my hair this morning so its not the best illustration.
Sorted
Hi Sorted, I think your hair looks over conditioned... unless it is still wet in the photo. I am not trying to insult you in any way ok? My sons brush out their hair then wash it in the shower with Suave shampoo that smells nice. Once a week they put conditioner in and then rinse out soon. Occasionally we put some conditioner on their hair before we braid it for school. But my older son wets his hair to damp in the morning and then puts on a little "Citre Shine" clear shine style and shine gel. It is clear. It controls alot of fuzz head (that is what they call fly away hair) I hope that info helps someone.
Esme
Actually that's probably true, my hair is a little over conditioned. I wash my hair 2-3 times a week with shampoo & conditioner, on my non-wash days I will often rinse my hair. (My "Bed head" is impossible to style without wetting.) If I want to get a comb through my hair after I've wet it, I have to use conditioner otherwise I fight I loosing battle.
I've switched to a mild conditioner for rinsing, which is not supposed to cause a build-up, but its not a good detangler, lease not for my hair type so I've been trying to reduce the frequency of rinsing my hair so I only wet my hair on Wash Days.
Thing is I feel like I'm fighting a loosing battle, I prefer to wear my hair down. But I can only do this on wash days or rinse days, cos my "bed head" is impossible to tame, so if I don't wash/rinse my hair then I'm left with a ponytail (or variation).
(OK. OK I'm whining!)
Your suggestion of washing more often and conditioning less seems to be in conflict with everything else I've hear, though I can see the merits if your shampoo is Mild and None drying. I think overall I'm better to try and reduce the frequency of my product use full stop. I'd saved £££ in the process... ;-)
Sorted, does your hair tangle easily? If so, do you ever get frustrated and just pull right through a tangle without trying to sort the tangle out before continuing? Also, is your hair fine. By that I mean, are the strands really thin. My hair is very fine and I have to be extremely patient when combing it out. I used to just pull right through a tangle and in doing so, not only do you break hair but you also stretch it and once a hair is stretched, it will never look the same. This could be the cause of some of your curly looking short hairs. That's been my experience.
Honestly Sorted, I don't think it looks much worse than your usual pics(which are always great). There is a bit more fly aways but that isn't always such a bad thing. And if you're saying that your hair feels better than you may as well keep it up. But, I have a few suggestions if you want to change something up.
Since 'cones "cling" to the hair, maybe once a week you could wash with a 'cone product? That way you'd have a small amount of 'cones on your hair all week, but you wouldn't be overdoing it.
Or, you could try just a tad bit of an oil, cream, or gel. See if that works. Hope that helps ya out some!
When you experiment with different kinds of products, you get realise what each one actually does. And you miss the postive impacts of each.
Cones are good provided you can clarrify, they are not the evil chemical agents everyone makes them out to be.
Still, I'm trying to cut down my product use as I'd rather just get my hair into its natural state. Constantly reworking my routine at the moment in hope that I can find a formula that works and keeps working.
Hey Sorted,
I had an awful time with tangles overnight until I started wearing a ponytail to bed. I usually wake up with the elastic band almost out, but it does the trick.
I wash my hair almost everyday and have started using Loreal Liquid Gel. Loreal Melting Gel has been recommended quite a few times here, but I'm more use to the spray. It really helps tame the frizz when you spray some - brush it and touch up spray it.
Your hair looks great Sorted, very nice and sleek :o)
Thee Longhaired Gal
Hello Sorted,
I remember in another of your posts that you mentioned you played football and that, or maybe it was rugby. But anyway, I never really had those short hairs crop up around my part noticeably until after a couple times playin basketball over the summer. I put it down to the summer heat, and decided it was frizz, but these unruly hairs are markably different than frizz aren't they? I have a feeling that all that jostling and contact and sweat when playing ball didn't help much towards keeping things undamaged. I haven't really played much since, havent played for about 2 months, and those short unruly, kinky sometimes bent and thin at the end hairs have gone away.
I also made a switch at the end of the summer to non cone shampoo and conditioner, and I don't seem to notice much difference, besides that I pick out less buildup on my hair when it is dry. I do have to put more effort into getting the shampoo to the ends of my hair after applying to my scalp, meaning I use more shampoo, because without cones and things it doesnt lather as much. But I haven't noticed any more flyaways then when I used cones s&c, in fact I've noticed less, but I think thats just because I haven't played ball for a while.
Those hairs also have something to do with the amount of time you've been growing your hair out. You'll notice that people with short hair don't seem to have any of them sticking out like that. And celebrity broads dont either, and I wonder whether it is because they have someone pick them out, or more likely, they just put them down with pomade or smoothing milk, or that stuff I havent used but heard about, anti frizz serum by some famous hairdresser, which is naturally an option if you don't want them to be seen if your going out.
Is it damage or new growth? Well it would be hard to believe that its damage, because I know you wouldnt do any specific harm to that area to cause that, and neither would I, but they showed up on me after playing sport, so thats why I was wondering if you have played ball lately.
Anyways, I figured I'd offer my experience with them to you, because when they first showed up I went into a frenzy, thinking of what aspect of my routine could be causing it, and searching the archives here for flyaways and frizz. They've gone away for me, either cause theyve grown enough to weigh something or theyve fallen out and havent come back or I've avoided sport.
Also, I meant to ask you, have you gotten a trim? I know you posted, your hairdresser was away, but did you get one since? I ask because I've been mulling over a trim for a while, and I'd like to know whether you had positive results with one.
Peace
I have those same little hairs--those flyaways.
Personally, I think they are new growth.
I would also like to say that I think silicones DO add some protection
to the hair by making it less dry and brittle and therefore less likely to break or split.
That is just my opinion, but since I have no split ends or damage,
that is good enough reason (for me, at least) for NOT fearing silicones.
And you are quite correct about silicones hiding
hair imperfections...because it is so true.
Have you ever tried L'Oreal SPRAY Gel? This product
can tame flyaways, but it does not contain silicones.
Just spray on and then light smooth a facecloth over your hair.
Adds shine and makes those little hairs behave.
By the way, your hair looks FANTASTIC!: straight
with good texture...
and it hangs about your face very nicely too!
Good luck on your Journey!
