Here's an article on how they cancelled an entire weight division in a boxing tournament rather than let a boxer fight while wearing a beard.
I think the 'safety' argument is that the opponent cannot see
there the chin is (to hit it) when there is a large beard. However, the boxer in question was willing to wear s net over the beard to
keep it contained.

We here full well know the pain of discrimination for merely growing hair where the Good Lord decided on a male it was to be. If we are to be most successful in opposing discrimination, the bearded folk should be the first among whom to look for allies. Not that there aren't a few longhaired and bearded folk here!
