OK, Guys. Listen up! I've gotta say this.
During the "awkward" phase - the *messy* phase when growing out hair
from 1 mm. to a nice shoulder length or below, much against the
will of most of us, we'll *have* to curl/wave the hair - mostly at
night - to get it to look presentable. That means (ga-a-a-gh) rollers,
pin-curls, wave clips or whatever, but it *has* to be done. Now, I
know the arguments: "What kind of weirdo puts his hair up in
rollers?". Well, think of looking *decent* with our lengthening hair,
guys! That's why women did it from the 1930's on when most no longer
wore hair to the knees and beyond. They *had* to control it - look
presentable - and they *did*. We can do the same with gender-neutral
or masculine stylings, lots of "natural" (though they're really
*not*) waves and curls which, I understand, the ladies *love*.
So let's bite the hair-set bullet, fellows. We wouldn't do this because
we have some *roller fetish*. God forbid!! We do it to look *good*,
mostly for the ladies.
Amen.

I think with hair styling aids of any kind, it's the result that counts. If rollers (or any other supposedly "feminine" method) achieve the result you want, by all means use them. It's only a fetish if you use them for the sake of using them.
I think guys with longer hair should at least try rollers to see if they like the result. Large rollers, the largest you can get in your hair, make it look smoother and more groomed, with maybe just some curl at the ends. Some people have really nice hair, smooth and shiny, that looks great with little or no styling. If you're no so lucky though, rollers, or styling with a brush and blow dryer can make a big difference.

Excellent reply, Doug. Good meaty commentary.

I used big brush rollers for years back in th '70s to maintain an reasonably ordered look to my fine shoulder-length hair. I'll admit I wasn't too open about it, though. Not even my girlfriend knew. After the set, I remoistened and blew dry a bit so it didn't have such a "set" look.
