I have thick, straight hair, which is difficult to style despite regular body perms. I am going out for a special evening with my girlfriend next saturday since it is my birthday and she has been trying to tame my hair to no avail. She does not want me to cut it, just able to style it. We discussed this at some length yesterday and in the end she convinced me to try having my hair set into a style that we both liked .
She booked an appointment for me today for next Saturday, in a busy unisex in-store salon. I now have to admit that I am getting very nervous about this, but can't (because it would upset her) and don't really want to cancel it (because I would never know if it worked).
I only have a very vague idea of what is involved in having a set and would appreciate some feedback from women and men who have had this done. What is it like, what is involved, how long does it take and to any guys in particular - do you feel conspicuous in the salon and what is the attitude of other people to you.
Please post here or e-mail me. If anybody is interested I will give feedback of my experience next week.
Thanks,
Paul
No need to worry. With thick, straight hair in good condition, your
hair after a roller set should look great as long as your hair isn't
too long to hold a curl (below shoulder length for heavy hair). Once
the hairstylists give you comments about your hair after the set,
you'll feel much better.
I have coarse, mostly one-length hair down to my midback. The total
time for the roller set I had took less than one hour, but my hair was
still somewhat damp. My hair had gentle waves, but after just one
combing, my hair got alot straighter.
I did feel a bit conspicuous (I was in a salon that wasn't busy), but
all the salons I saw where roller sets are dried have the drying area
tucked into a somewhat out of way area. As for what other people
felt, my money spoke for me, and the hairstylists appreciated that.
Relax. I've "been there-done that". Take your girlfriend with you it will help alot. Last Halloween my girlfiend talked me into going to a party dressed as her. We went to her salon and they did my hair -makeup , everything. Having her there really made everything very relaxed. My "wet set" took about an hour. Styling took another 40 minutes or so( a french braid starting at the nape of my neck and working up to my crown where the rest of my hair was pied in tons of curls). Anyway, if I can go thru that-you should have no problem. Plus -- you will love the way it makes yor hair feel. So will your girlfriend-mine did. She likes to roll mine regulally now just because she lies the way my hair reacts and looks. Relax, Have fun and enjoy. Let us know how your experiance goes.
Interesting.... I had no idea you two shared the same personality.
;)
Nyghtfall:: When you sat "you two"- who are you referring to?
To Everyone: Sorry for the typos!

I thought I was referring to you and Paul, unless your comment was a response to Richard in his response to Paul.
Nyghtfall-
Thot you might be reffering to me and my girlfriend ( now wife ). We do share everything.

I KNOW HOW YOU FELT. THE FIRST IS KINDA SCARY BUT
IF YOU LIKED IT AS MUCH AS I DID YOU'LL GET USED TO IT
JUST BE THANKFUL YOUR GIRLFRIEND SWAYED YOU.
I LIKED THE LOOK FROM A WET ROLLER SET SO MUCH
THAT I LEARNED TO SET MY OWN HAIR (WHEN I WASN'T
HAVING THE SALON DO IT) IT REALLY GIVES NICE BODY
AND WAVE WHEN DONE WITH LOTS OF ROLLERS SET IN
BRICKLAYER PATTERN GOING BACK. ROLLER OF CHOICE
FOR ME WERE MAGNETIC ROLLERS (THE MESCH GAVE ME
I suppose it's too late to offer my support in your anxious salon-experience, but: I get my hair set on rollers in Seattle on a regular basis, at Gary-Manuel salon, and though some of the clients tend to stare a bit, the staff loves it and my hairdresser, Katherine, won't let me get a trim anymore without putting me in rollers afterward. My hair is shoulder-length, blonde, all one length, and it looks great after she rolls it. Don't let the turkeys get you down, and bravo to your girlfriend!!
