The mother of a longhaired boy posted this before the board was corrupted:
I am amazed at how this thread has grown to dealing with the ills of pedophilia, homophobia, etc., but no one is dealing with the question the poor lady asked!
Because male and female children before puberty look much alike (girlish voices and facial hair, boyish chest and body shape), it's harder to tell what sex they are. And nowadays, little girls don't for the most part wear dresses. There is nothing wrong with this - people should have the right to look like they want. But quite a few people, not having other markers, themselves turn to hair length. When enough people do this, longhaired males before puberty are presented problems that those of us older do not face.
So if mothers, or fathers for that matter, of these children want to talk about those problems, and about strategies, hair styles that work, etc., yeah, including pictures, why can't we let them do that in peace? And why not here? This is an appropriate forum, and the adults here will be supportive - we know what it is like to have long hair and suffer discrimination for it. The adults here also know what is appropriate behavior as concerns children. As with the other infrequent inappropriate behavior which has from time to time appeared, we should support those parents and young longhairs by showing the miscreants the door.
Most of us are not `miscreants' who talk about pedophobia, etc. Many of those responses were in fact helpful about boys with long hair. There were only a couple that dealt with pedophobia, possibly due to the paranoia about sex!
That's the only one that I know that deals with boy's long hair.
The problem was not pedophiles or homophobes on the board, but the fear of them, which was expressed in a number of posts and expressed in the actions of all those who have restrained themselves from posting more. Couldn't you feel the caution and fear in the posts of many of those who did talk about their children? And did you see anyone post photos? No.
This was not directed to any of the well-meaning people on the board, but the unknown evil many of them were afraid of. What I was advocating was for them to shed their fear and do what women call
"take back the night". The post was a call for others to support them.
That site you gave a link to only talks about historical clothing, which is about as supportive of modern longhairs as Hercules movies. Better than nothing, but those people need a forum about "now", not the Civil War. Let's welcome them and make them comfortable here.
