Hey, have any of you fellows who have grown your hair extremely long (i.e to mid back, waist or longer) ever gone through a period of time questioning whether or not to cut it short. For three and a half years I've been resolute about growing my hair long and it is now well down to mid-back, but all of a sudden about a month and a half ago I started struggling with whether to keep my hair long or not.
Part of the problem is that I am about one year into growing out my bangs and hair over my ears (you know, a former mullet style). It still isn't long enough on the top or sides to look good. I remember john (lower case intentional) responding to one of my posts earlier this year about growing out a mullet. He said it takes about two years for it to look good. I guess I'm half way there.
Anyway, I need some encouragement from some of you long-term long hairs. I've extended the "two week" rule to two months and I'm still pretty much resolute NOT TO CUT. However, I still have these thoughts and I don't like it! I would like to know if any others have struggled in this way. THANKS for your input!

Here's a thought. Why not grow your hair long to eventually cut it and donate it to kids with cancer. That way you can forstall your urge to cut. Then, when it's grown out you can decide.
Check out www.locksoflove.org for information on donating long hair to make wigs for kids who've lost their hair due to cancer.
Its sort of like donating blood, it's a part of your body you can donate while you're still alive.
When people hassle you about your hair you can tell them you're growing it for kids with cancer. What boss can fault that?
Final thought, for some folks a radical change in hair style is an indication of psychiatric distress. If that's the case, talk to someone you trust.
It did take a couple years for my 'mullet' to reach a ponytail... another year for it to stay tied back all day. At some point you may need to ~shudder~ cut the back closer to the length of the top & sides. I found that after 3 years of growing the mullet, that normal growth cycle fallout attrition had thinned the back to where it really didn't look good- so I cut it (just as it was reaching my beltline, too!).
I can understand why you are tempted to cut a year into growing out the top... you are in the bad hair phase- it falls in your face & isn't long enough to restrain- and doesn't look quite right with the back. Perseverance will pay off if you don't cut- though you are face with the eventual task of trimming the back- wait a few months then clean up the ends... an inch or two. If you want to maintain the length in back while the mullet catches up, then trim no more than an inch every two months.
The decision to cut it off is just as personal as the decision to grow it out. It's your hair- some folks decide to 'move on'; treating their long hair as a phase in life. I have no problem with that. It doesn't sound like you're seriously considering to cut yours, but more frustrated that it's not the length you want it. Patience and time will pay off.
