A lady at work can't keep her hands off my hair. She braids it everytime we're on shift together. I'm okay with that( not sure her husband would be though). Earlier this week she laid that tired old line on me that I had split ends and needed to get a trim.
I just told her politely that I wasn't going to do it.
When I got home I dug out two magnifying glasses, one I use for photo work and another used for counting threads in fabric. Both magnify the ends of my hair very well.
I only found one split end! and that was just about a 1/4 inch split. All the others were clean cut with no split. What she saw was an optical illusion of two or more hairs together that just look like one hair is split.
So my suggestion is if someone is ragging you about having split ends dig up a good magnifying glass and check them out yourself before you rush off for a trim.

Had the same situation some time ago. Ended up with the description from one lady that the ends were split UP the hair shaft and not at the ends where I looked and didn't see em. Which, of course, meant I still had split ends, I guess??
OK OM, I have to tell you-I'm confused. What is the big deal about a trim?
I'm a longhair female and usually get trims to keep my hair healthy looking. (NOTE:I know healthy LOOKING does not necessarily mean healthier!)
I actually haven't had a trim in a year and a half easily and consequently my hair doesn't look as good as it could. Is it that "just a trim" thing that turns into a full blown haircut that keeps you entirely away from scissor wielding folk?
It seems like your colleague is mistaken just like the person describing the woman's hair on the URL I (hopefully) linked. Her hair, which is separating at the ends does not look split at all. (Although you'd have to look at it much closer up.) This is NOT what split ends are!
Thanks for a great photo. My hair resembles hers in texture and "thinness." I agree, those aren't split ends.
I've taken hair that has come out naturally on my brush and looked at the entire length of many under magnification and still don't see any sign of split ends. So, I still don't think I have them.
My sense is that the thiness of my hair, combined with having a lot of them, gives the illusion of split ends. The thin hairs look like splits of regular hair.
Yeah, I've not done well with trims. I agree they help the hair look better, but the last two times to get a trim the scissor wackers just couldn't restrain themselves and I lost 3 or 4 months growth. If the ends were split, yeah I guess I'd whack them off. But they aren't
My plan is to get the length first, then cut. It's down to my bottom, but I want it long enough to be that long when braided too.
Meantime, I guess I'll just ignore, or correct the folks who feel it necessary to tell me I have split ends.....
