Welcome! I liked your candy store metaphor. I stumbled across both these sites about a year ago, and they have helped/inspired me enough to continue growing my hair through the "awkward stage."
One of the first things I did was create a chart of when my hair would reach certain lengths, based on the average 1/2 inch a month rule. This has helped me work toward a goal of not cutting. I've also followed the 2-week rule. If you ever consider getting any kind of haircut, wait two weeks. If the feeling passes, you won't regret making a seemingly-irreversible mistake.
I've actually surpassed my one-year goal for length, and have growed for about 3-4 more months than when I tried about 3 years ago.
