What length is best for starting to wear a pony tail

I am not too keen on tying my hair back into a little dinky ponytail, but am equally aware that the hair at the back of my neck is beginning to look unkempt. There seems to be a tradeoff between keping your hair tidy and have a reasonable ponytail. What have others found to be a reasonable length to first start wearing one.

  Try using some mouse on your longer hair in the back until it is long enough for a tail. Makes it a lot more attractive when it dries, especially if you are in an area with a lot of summer humidity.
  Mine is to my shoulder blades now, and in my office, it has been acceptable (at least to my face).

  When I grew my hair out a few years ago, I had the hair at the bottom trimmed every 8 weeks or so, until the hair at the crown grew long enough to become part of the tail(about 8 inches). Then I let it all grow until I had enough for a thick three inch ponytail. In the meantime, I had kept the sides and bangs trimmed, so that hair was too short to go into the ponytail. I got around this while that part was growing out by brushing the front and sides back and holding them in place with a superhold hairspray from Redken called "Lift and Shine Finishing Spritz." This stuff dries like glue, but is water-soluble and shampoos right out. Anyway, this let me grow my hair long enough for a ponytail while staying "neat and tidy" for the office. Good luck.

  Do guys ever use pins or clips to hold short hair that won't tie back?

    I have used small bobby pins, the kind with the little ridges that grip the hair. I have dark hair and the bobby pins are dark, so they aren't very noticeable. In addition, you can tuck them under the hair that is pulled back so they are almost completely hidden. Overall, though, I found hair spray to be the most effective way to keep the shorter loose strands in place.
