I am curious why in society often times a man with long hair is suspected of being gay. I recently visited Provincetown, Massachusetts which has a very large homosexual population and I don't think I saw one gay man there with long hair. Almost all of them had their hair very short and often bleached blond.
I am a straight male who just thinks long hair on men looks really cool. I can look at a man with long hair and say I like his hair but I have absolutely no sexual attraction to him. As long as the hair is thick and full, I think both men and women look much better with long hair. I wish more women out there loved long hair!
I live in the Castro and as a longhair, less people here think I'm gay than they think that about the shorthaired people I'm with. If anybody knows about gay people, it's the folks in this neighborhood. So, yeah, you're dealing with clueless people.

I'll go along with that. I suspect it's based on very outdated and primitive stereotypes, i.e., "'Long-haired man' = 'looks like a woman' = 'gay.'" Never mind that the gay male hair trend for several years now has been the ultra-butch, ultra-"masculine" buzz cut.
Actually, Stanley, I believe a greater percentage of females likes
long hair on males, than males like long hair on males.
Happy Y2K!

I'm sorry. What does appearance have to do with sexual orientation!?
I mean, my brother, who's in high school, is afraid to wear pink in fear of persecution.
I wonder, though. Women who have short hair-- are they associated with being lesbian? Because there are a lot of women I've known with those short Katie Couric cuts, and believe me, they're not! But I've heard this label, too.
*Are* men with long hair often suspected as being gay? I'm as queer as a $3.00 bill *and* a longhair, and I didn't know that. I honestly didn't! Golly gee, and here I thought all this time that my long hair made me look more straight. (AS IF I care about appearing "straight!")
Anyway, the vast majority of my male friends are gay and they have short hair. In fact, many have very short, buzzed hair. I know what you mean about Provincetown... I was in Los Angeles (technically, West Hollywood) this past June for their huge gay pride celebration, and the bleach blonde buzz cuts were *everywhere*, whereas I could count the longhairs I saw (including myself) on one hand.
I guess the perception of guys with long hair being gay is some sort of heterosexual fantasty/hang-up... much like the Richard Gere & gerbil story that has circulated for at least the past 20 years!
I meant to say "fantasy," not "fantasty..." but considering the topic at hand, go ahead and leave it at "fanTASTY!" -Silvermane
I concur. Here in San Diego, all the gay guys go in for short, buzzed, or shaved heads and clean shaven or light goatees. Me, with hair to my butt and a thick full beard--I'm looked at as weird. Or trying to pass for "straight" or "butch." Long hair any more doesn't mean gay. Neither do multiple earrings, which I also have. I'm not sure there's any "signifier" for being gay any more--except, of course, sleeping with men. That's always a giveaway.
I like two things:
1)to grow my hair long
2)the beautiful women
Then society might think that you're a lesbian in a man's body.
I suspect society is obsessed with sex to the point where fewer people can distinguish between what is erotic and what is aesthetically pleasing:
It seems a person can't look at another person's long hair without the risk of getting accused of looking at the person as a sex object. I guess some people assume that stamp collectors and people who go to antique-car shows are sexually attracted to stamps and cars.
Maybe insecure viewers get worried if they find a picture of a good-looking long hair. I guess some people think people can change their sexual orientation on a whim.
I know lots of women who think long hair is really sexy! It's unfortunate that more men don't grow their hair out. It's actually hard to find men with long hair - look around!
But, I know for a fact, having listened in and participated in plenty of girltalk about men and what makes them attractive that women like long hair.

Thank you for the input, this is very well appreciated. I have been growing my hairs since about a year and a half and my pony tail is 11 inches long now. I am noticing indeed that many women like that and I appreciate it a lot.
