Here's a suggestion for a quick, painless, private hair set: put your hair up in jumbo velcro rollers before you shower. Don't let it get wet, but take a nice hot steamy 10 min. shower. Leave your hair up for a few minutes to dry, then take it down. Presto: a natural looking set, without having to sit under the dryer or fuss with hot rollers.
I got this suggestion from a woman friend who does her hair this way at the health club. Haven't tried it in the men's locker room yet, tho........
Actually, I've seen two guys here at my local club who do some maintainence work on their hair in almost the exact way you describe. One guy is a real burly, middle aged real estate broker with a full head of permed , salt and pepper colored ringlets. Every Monday morning Charley's in the sauna setting his hair that his wife has put up in velcro mini-rollers the night before. First he goes into the steam sauna for 15 minutes, then he follows that sitting with a visit into the dry sauna. When he's done, the curls are tights and evenly formed. It looks like he just left the stylist. The other guy is probably about my age, in his thirties and a wallstreet type, I think. He's got longer, beautiful brown, natural curls -looser ones- that tend to get limp as he's been letting them grow them out over the last couple months. He saw what Charley has been doing to maintain his perm without further damage to his hair and now he's been putting his hair in rollers and using the saunas to set it the same way. As a result, there is definitely more bounce and body to his curls
So be assured that today's man is definitely bringing his curlers to the locker room! Some of us may not want to admit it, but most of us know we are just as vain as the women out there when it comes toour grooming and hair care.
That's a great story. It's always nice to hear about guys who enjoy wearing long hair and taking good care of it and don't give a flying f... what the narrow-minded think. I belong to a posh super-stodgy health club where the men's locker room is full of overweight bald naked guys watching baseball, and where they have bottles of that green "Hair Tonic" from the 1940s. I'll let you know how they react the first time I put my hair up in rollers and hit the sauna.........

Yeeee Haaaaa!!!! Wish I could be there to see their expressions.
After all the posts, I still don't have answers to the original questions....other than get some and fiddle around...
Might be fun to put my hair in rollers and wander around the supermarket a while...
Old joke: Why did the bride wear rollers at her wedding?
So she could look good for the reception...
There are lots of sites with rolling tips -- try Marci's:
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/2457/techniques.html
I would start with velcros, they're easiest altho they tend to cling to & break hair. The best solution: find a willing, preferably enthusiastic girlfriend, or an open-minded hairdresser.
Medicine Man,
sounds like you might be envious of us dudes who have the self-confidence to pamper our male egos by setting and styling our hair the way we want.
Ours is a pretty comfortable club as well, there's a colorist, massuse, a manicurist, dietician and personal trainers available. I think that Charley gets a lot of respect because he's a commanding figure, with or without his curlers. He's a big, wooly guy, lots of body hair and a super gray mustache and a number one salesman. The other guy is also, pretty well hung, financially very secure and young. If he wants to curl his hair, so what? Who's going to say he cannot enjoy a few hedonistic pleasures?
What is a colorist?
The colorist is a part-time beautician or stylist who is available to help guys (and women)wanting to hi-lite hair, with the right tones for their complexion and natural hair color.
Put your hair up in velcro rollers......?
Okay, so you're talking to a guy who has no clue what that means...
How does someone with long hair put their hair up?
Where do you put the rollers?
What direction do you roll them?
What size is jumbo?
Might be fun to experiment with if I could get past actually buying the rollers....and if I knew how to use the things....
Hi Medicine Horse,
Well, women and girls have been putting their hair - all lengths -
up in rollers for decades now, usually without help. We can learn
from them, although I grant you, it might be embarrassing at first.
But it appears to me that there is no way we males can have good-looking hair during the short-to-shoulder-length growing-out
phase without some sort of setting to control its shape. For years,
pin-curls, curlers, and rollers have been the means for females,
and it has worked for males in the late 60's to early 70's when many
of us wore our hair longer. So, I suppose until we can find something
more "masculine" to style our hair, without using harmful chemicals,
then it looks like it's going to be rollers. In the end, though, I
think it'll be worth it.

I take offense to that. My hair looks great, and I do not use any sort of setting. Maybe there is no way *your* hair can look good without setting, but that's you!
Kilgore, shoulder length......and (someday) longer.
Hey, Kilgore, we are lucky! Some of us are born with wavy or curly hair, and have hair all over the place around our heads without doing anything at all. But other guys have straight really limp hair, and have to do something about it if that is not the look they want.
But it is not all roses for us. Straight hair is generally stronger, so those guys can usually get more length than we can.
Celebrate the hair you have, but above all, celebrate it long!
Bill
Bill,
Wow!! What great hair! And all naturally curled? Some guys have all the luck!
How long have you been growing it? Do you intend to grow it longer (I hope so). Thanks for the great photo, any more to post?
Hey, thanks Bill. Great photo, especialy the bandana. But I still like your hair longer and fuller. The bigger, bushier beard is awesome! Got anymore recent photos?
Thanks, man. You're hair's Terrific and the beard is enviable. But you didn't answer my questions. How long are you going for? Thanks, man.
Cool you like my hair. I've been around this board so long most of the guys have seen my photos, so I didn't want to bore them with posting them again, but I see someone else volunteered. ((grin)) No problem with answering your question, of course....
Describing length is tough with hair like mine, because it mostly ignores gravity and won't stay put. If I pull down on it, it reaches mid-back, but when I let go of it, it is soon back up all over the shoulderblades. Several times I've had two long hair strands make a knot near the end and then one fall out at its root, creating a strand twice the usual length of my hair. It will reach my belt, but does it stay there? No, of course not. It promptly springs up to the top of my back to be with all the others. ;-) So that illustrates what is probably to follow, if I grow more length.
As for how long I'm going for, I'd quit when the mass reaches mid-back when not pulled down on. But I don't think it will ever get there. I just keep getting more and more up by my head.
Have you ever considered multiple braids? They can look preety cool, especially with a beard and you get your controlled length. Just a thought.
Nope, I like it loose! That's my own preference for long hair, and on my own head, that's what wins out. :-) Also, it is almost impossible to braid hair as curly as mine. You can't keep it separated into three segments to do the braiding because the segments keep getting intertwined.
Email me if you want to continue the thread - it's getting a bit long and it's becoming more of a two man dialog than a board discussion. Be talking to you there, dude.

So do I!
How 'bout a three-man dialog?
I don't mean to bore you, but look at http://the-light.com/archive/mens/messages/8365.html and http://the-light.com/archive/mens/messages/7998.html about wearing it loose.
Quite true!
My comments weren't aimed at any *one* person, Kilgore. But there
have been enough comments from others about the growing-out phase
I mentioned that it would appear that most fellows, yourself being
an exception, would require some sort of hair control, as have women
and girls, and setting appears to have worked quite well.

One of the reasons women continue to look good during a growing out period is that women are more likely to get regular trims that give growing-out hair some shape and style as it grows. This is more effective in the long run at controlling the shape of the hair, and more stylish, too. The tiny bit of growth you sacrifice is worth it, because you will be happier and look better and less scraggly around the edges. After all, growing one's hair is a long-term proposition anyway, you might as well look your best at whatever stage. Regular trims (every 3-4 months or so) can keep your hair looking stylish as it grows out, as long as your stylist knows your desire to keep growing the hair. I have nothing against roller sets for anyone, male or female, but it is not the only way to control growing-out hair.
Good, sensible advice. Part of the problem, I think, is that as our hair starts to get long, a lot of guys start to imagine ourselves as Sampson, and the thought of shears approaching our hair inspires about the same enthusiasm as a midnight visit from Lorena Bobbit. ;-)

on your wife, girlfriend, or sister's head...
away from your head (toward a female)...
I kid, I'm a kidder. If a guy wants to wear rollers, more power to him. I just love to poke fun, but I really mean no harm.
Kilgore, a bastard from birth.
Hi Shandar,
I use rollers, but a different kind. My hair is dirty blonde and very thick. My hairdresser convinced me to grow it long a few years ago, and also got me into using
deep conditioning, and rollers. Although, the wave is natural, it's enhanced by using hot
rollers with a heat styling mist first.
Some consider this to be feminine, but I don't. I like wearing my hair long and therefore
it must be well kept. The styling helps.
I also feed my hair from the inside out, thru proper nutrition, as I am a Nurse Practitoner
and also a Registered Dietician.
I've posted some pics on Jennifer's photo gallery at the Long Hair Lovers site.
Chris!
I've seen your pictures over at longhairlovers.com. You're hair looks great. I wish I could get my husband to try that.
Have you let your hair grow any longer since those pictures were taken? Will you send Jennifer some new pics (if you've let it grow longer)? I'd love to see it!
Take care,
Katie
Thanks for the compliments Katie(blush). Does your husband know that you'd be comfortable with his use of rollers? That could be a real door opener for him, especially if you are willing to help him to roll and set it. The first few times I depended upon the advice and instructions I graciously received from my friend. After that I've pretty much been able to do it myself, if I'm so inclined. Typically, though I find it satisfying to do together with my partner.
As for your question about my growth, I'd say it's about 8 or 9 inches longer, hanging down to the small of my back. As it's grown out I've taken to experimenting with tighter curls to give more body. I've also let my moustache lengthen and my beard grow out. I guess you's say I'm a work in progress!
I've been busy with a move. But will try to repost some pics soon. Chris
I can't wait to see them! Should we look for them at this site, or over at Jennifer's site?
