Hello
I am 20 and want to grow out my hair but i have some problems. My hair is thin and dry, and grows very slow.... I grew my hair once for a year and a half, and it only grew 5 1/2 - 6 inches. I want to know all there is to know. How may times i should get it trimmed, certain foods that may help, certain shampoos, conditioners. How often i should wash it, comb, or even massage my scalp. Just everything and anything to make it grow its fastest and keep it healthy. Much thanks in advance for help on this one people..=)
Shampoo once a week if that often, use a moisturizing conditioner whether you use shampoo or not, eat a high protein diet, find an amino acid supplement, DON'T get it trimmed for at least 6 months; trimming will simply set you back. Above all, take care of your hair- dont dye, bleach or perm it... chemicals damage hair.
Make sure you eat healthy, get lots of vitamins, especially zinc.
Dont cut it at all!
This is the same mike...i just noticed other mike's and one of em is gay...so i am not that one...i am as straight as can be. ok then...
so shampoo how often......?
What about gels or sprays?? just leave em in the whole week before shampooing again?? or not use them at all..?
So i assume no cuts at all..ok i got that.
My hair is about 2 1/2 inches in top and about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch on the side. I was planning on growing thee top and keeping the sides this length until my top gets longer. Should i stay on this plan or just start letting it all grow out now. My hair is dry and thin, and gets pretty wavy the longer it grows. Well i also used to wash my hair everyday, so now it might not be as dry as i will attempt to wash it once a week or so. So grow out all over the head....or grow out sides when top gets longer.... thx for all the help..appreciate it greatly...

well my hair is thin/fine and oily, so I HAVE to wash it everyday. This is the third time Ive grown out my hair. Right now it's just a bit past my eyes, so Ive got a loooong, crappy road ahead of me too.
I trim my side burn area and the back of my neck because I dont like the look of the frizzies. Some will suggest not cutting it at all, but it all depends on how you wanna keep it. Letting the top grow out first might be a good idea to avoid that "all hair the same length" look. Basically, figure out how you want your hair to look in the future and start planning how to shape it now. Still, Id avoid any trim at all for 6-8 months so you see what you have to work with. Just my opinion.
DAMN! And all us gay boys were hoping to have sex with you THROUGH THE COMPUTER. ;-)
No silver...=) this is a message post yes, and will never be anything more. But there are other Mike's and I dont want people thinkin I am that Mike(gay mike) Yes, you are right. But I don't want someone to give advice to a guy they think is gay....The last thing I want is advice on curlers...=\ j/k
Here's a hint: If you really don't want people to think you are gay, don't try and convince them that your are straight. Real straight guys don't do that. "I'm straight, I'm straight, I'm straight!" is a dead give away to some latency issues.
Kilgore...I'm straight, I'm straight, I'm straight... Uh oh, my wife always said I was a latent homosexual.
Well from what I see, or where I live(LA) It's 'hip' to be gay or some crap like that. Homosexuals these days are open, I guess society accepts it to an extent so homosexuals need not deny their life style. So if is like that, non gays, who are thought of as gay, might need defend, or will be considered gay. No pun to any homosexuals out there..=)
Shampoo once a week!?!? Can i get some other opinions on this. I use pantene leave in conditioner to comb and style, so just leave that in the whole week?? So is it time for a shower cap or what?? If anyone knows what is the purpose of not shampooing for that many days.. Thx guys
And again...no trimming at all, or trim periodically..help me out on the trimming...i have no clue..
Mike
All of this really depends on your hair type. For instance, I don't follow most of these rules. I am mixed Caucasian and Native American, and ended up with coarse, very thick, wavy hair with plenty of oil. So I blow dry every day (my hair takes about 3-4 hours to dry by itself, and gets very tangled if I don't blow dry it, and the breakage from untangling is more damaging than the drying), shampoo fairly (about 3x per week) often b/c it gets too oily otherwise, and I also notice my hair feels nicer after dyeing and is less prone to tangling than before. On the other hand, an individual with finer or dryer hair would risk serious damage by doing the same. You just have to figure out what works best for your hair.

Although as a general rule the less hair is manipulated the less wear & tear there will be on it, I don't necessarily agree that shampooing only once a week is "best" for your hair. It may well be best for some people, but it certainly isn't for me! While I don't feel like a have a dandruff problem per se, my scalp gets to itching somethin' fierce if I go too many days between shampoos, and all the brushing and/or scratching in the world doesn't help!
I shampoo to cleanse my scalp as much (if not more) than for the sake of my hair, and I generally shampoo about every 2 - 3 days, so that is at least twice a week and usually more often.
You need to shampoo your hair as frequently - or infrequently - as is best for YOU. Experiment and find out what leaves YOUR hair and scalp feeling and looking best.
Ugh! I know what you mean there! I thought about it and figured that maybe since I wasn't blow-drying my hair that perhaps I was getting a case of mold in my hair. I tried blow-drying on a medium setting, but found that I was mostly drying the ends and not the roots where the mold would set in if it could. But I think my head puts off enough heat to dry it up there enough within an hour and a half to keep mold from growing! haha.
Also, my hair isn't so thick on the crown any more. :-( It's kind of a shame that once I decided to grow long hair it's not as thick and bushy on the grown as it used to be. Only being 29 I do wonder if it might get thinner, but I noticed the thinning two years ago and it hasn't gotten noticeably worse. As you can imagine I'm somewhat hesitant to even brush for fear of ripping out the hair. If it's going to fall out, it's inevitable. On a side note I found that using a product called Nioxin shampoo and conditioner, I could pull my long hair down and I could see tiny little hairs growing up on top. After using this shampoo, it makes you feel like you've put a strong mint all through your hair. It actually tingles. I wasn't able to use it long enough to find out if it was really working to stimulate hair growth or not, but it did make my scalp turn a pinkish color after using it.
No, you misunderstood- I meant shower daily, just don't use shampoo... it strips oil from your hair- you said you have dry hair. use conditioner though. No trimming at all for at least 6 months.
I'm not that dumb, hehe lol. By not showering i simply meant not washing my hair, my fault there literalist boy..=) So rinse my hair just not shampoo it but still condition right?? Or just not wet it or bother with it at all? And what exactly is the purpose of your natural oils? I have no clue, so i feel dumb asking, but hey i got to start somewhere. Thx fellas.. I am using pantene products now...any suggestions for something better??? I have thin/dry hair...after showering my hair air dries in about 20 minutes. thanks

First, avoid hair dryers. Or, if you must, use them on the LOWEST heat setting. My hair drys naturally in less than an hour.
Second, consider using Jojoba oil for your dry hair ends. It's fairly expensive, but, a little goes a long way.
Third, comb or brush it every day. That distrubutes the oil from your scalp and will help the dry hair ends problem.
Fourth, when you comb, brush, or shampoo...do it GENTLY. If it snags, ease up...don't jerk through the snag. Treat your hair like fine lace. Guys have trouble learning this.
Fifth, keep reading this list. People are very helpful here.
Hello, Mike,
5 1/2 to 6 in. growth of head hair annually is bang-on average. If
you think that may not be your maximum possible, why not try
HAir Formula 37 at http://www.salonweb.com/hairgrowth? It *may* work
for you. Some have reported up to (and maybe beyond) an inch/month.
Not being a nutritionist nor trichologist (hair specialist), I've
read from "experts" that the emphasis is on high-protein foods,
since that is what produces the keratin which makes up the hair. If
you read the specs on Hair Formula 37, you'll see that the contents
are all food supplements specific to hair growth, only a lot of them
in concentrated form. Please also note the warnings as to who should
*not* take this substance: eg., folks with high blood pressure,
heart problems etc.
TAke care.
