The January 13, 2000 Electronic Telegraph (online version of the UK newspaper) had an article about a guy who was denied a bartending job because of his past-shoulder-length hair. He protested and an industrial tribunal awarded him approximately $700US. I know it's not much, but it's another paving stone on the path to longhair acceptance. The link to the article is below; sorry if it's a bit too long and/or doesn't work.
I'm a female and don't have to worry about my hair length when it comes to finding employment. But hearing about capable men being denied work soley because they are longhairs really burns me up! I know this topic has come up on the board in the past, but I just wanted my first post here to be a positive one!

Not until more men begin refusing to cut their hair for the many narrow-minded employers, who are ALLOWED to require that men keep their hair short, will the situation change.
In addition, any business that enforces such a policy should be boycotted by longhaired men, but it is important that the owners and managers be contacted and made aware as to the reason for the boycott.
If they choose not to have us work for them, why should we choose to be their customers?
Perhaps a web site should be started whereas such businesses are listed. Any thoughts on this?
Why glorify those businesses through publicity?
It certainly could be done! We don't have the army of volunteers it would take to develop and verify anything near a complete list, of course. To start with, we'd probably want to stick with major companies whose discrimination is verifiable in writing. This could be from a court case, media publicity, a sheet from a personnel manual, or a written reprimand harassing a worker.
Probably the largest collection of discrimination information in one place, discussed or linked to, is on my site at the URL below. Would there be interest in starting a "we do not patronize" list associated with it, as discussed above? Let me know your ideas in an e-mail or by posting here.
Maybe it would be more effective to list businesses that DON'T discriminate against long hair. It may encourage others to welcome long hairs.
YES!!!!- That is a great idea- Count on me on this project- We need a web site listing all those ....(fill in the blank) businesses that
refuse to hire long haired males- Why? because of some stupid cultural traditions that just don't make ant logical sense.
Go for it!!
