Hello everyone! I am Kyle and I have been growing my hair for about 2 years. I started this time last year during my last year of high school I really wanted to grow long hair for a while but my parents were against it so I had to wait a bit, but now I have been able to let it grow for 2 years and it is really starting to feel long! I am definitely going to keep growing further but wanted to share my progress with some people who might appreciate it as much as I do.

In the awkward stage at the end of high school. Luckily left for college soon after so I didn't have to hear my parents complain anymore

Today with it down.

Here it is in a ponytail, which is how I usually put it up. Sometimes I wear a bun, but that makes it feel basically like short hair to me so I prefer a ponytail since it still looks long and I can feel it move around like long hair.

Hi all.

Been a while since I've posted here, but the time has come to return to the ranks of a longhair. Went from shoulder length to a buzzcut for residency but am nearly done and want to grow it again. Starting from a #2 and hope to get it back to my shoulders.

I thought I going to have a trim today, however, the stylist only snipped the ends, not even a trim. I asked her how long my hair is now, she said just below the shoulders, I asked her how long it will be before I reach mid-back, she said by spring. kind of exciting that I should be mid-back length in 3-5 months.

When should I start using conditioner??

Hair Dyeing

It's not something I'm considering. We are quite a few grey (gray) haired guys around here, and I'm happy with mine.

My wife dyes hers, which I think is a pity. She would wear grey hair very well. The problem is as the hair grows and shows its natural colour at the roots. Is there a type of dye that is less harmful to the hair.

Another problem my wife has with her frizzy hair is on the top of her head. It's quite rough at the ends but the ends don't seem to be split, at least the ones I looked at with a magnifying glass. The rest of the hair is softer at the ends, but she keeps it a lot shorter than I'd like ideally (I respect her freedom and she respects mine). It's almost a "perpetual awkward stage". Perhaps it's a question of general health or the effect of the dye. Any ideas from this scanty data?

I'll have a look through the archives on growing frizzy hair.

I've been an undercover long hair for a while. 90% of the time I keep my hair up. When my hair is down, I seem to be pigeonholed. I've been pigeondholed as a stoner, as an artist, and as a musician. The truth is, though I am these things, artist, musician, I am pretty much deep down inside, very conservative.

Interestingly, I am conservative in a right wing fashion. I don't drink, I don't smoke pot, but I do have artistic abilities like playing guitar and doing digital art. Underneath it all, some way or another, I always thought I was a long hair underneath it all. Living in a right-wing town, has been sort of a challenge, because if I am not clean cut I am pigeondholed to the extreme.

Because I've taken this job and have been an uncover long hair for so long; I have been debating on cutting it for the past year. The truth is I want to be a professional musician. I have this nostalgia for classic rock and metal. But I feel like, the world, and everthing around me is wanting me to be against that. It's like the world wants men to be clean cut; and that's the way it is. When I go around with my hair down, i'm not almost always comfortable. But I also feel it signifies part of me as a person and my character. I am identified more with a different crowd.

But I've been stuck in this working class job for a while. Even though my political leanings are more conservative; I feel being that I'm a musician deep down it is conflicting for me because I do not smoke pot nor do I drink; I just happen to love classic rock and metal. I love hippy rock and all that good stuff. But the working class doesn't understand me.

I know I might be making a bigger deal of this then I seem to be; but when I walk around life and 90% of the time my hair up tied back and I'm not really "Who I want to be" - I question why I'm doing this in the first place. Second, to be honest with you, I don't even think I really look good with my hair down. I don't think I have the face for it. Maybe sometimes the personality but I look a lot better and am more receptive when I am clean cut.

Because I've been a longhair now for about 3 years, I've sort of developed a bias towards clean cut men. And I'm sure they have developed a Bias towards me. It's not that, I am against them; but I feel psychologically it puts a filter on your life. You don't "Go with the flow" as easily. You are not always "welcomed" everywhere, thus it makes it challenging. And in fact, I have developed a disdain for clean cut males; in that I feel they have it "Easier" - and are "Groomed for conformity" - not that I feel, they are lesser human beings; butit is painful to go through this.

Cutting my hair, is sort of like cutting my dream. If I cut my hair, given the fact 90% of the time I have my hair up anyway because of work; symbolically I am giving up on my dream; and cutting my hair signifies that I have lost the battle. The battle to one day become a professional musician and be who I really want to be. When I cut my hair, it's a sign that I have given up. And that's why I have not cut it, even though I have debated cutting it for a year now. It's made life more difficult in regards to my acceptance in society. But I am not ready to give up yet, and in a way it has become part of me. I once had a dream that I did cut my hair, and woke up completely depressed.

Even though, when I wake up it's messy and ugly and shaggy, even though that for some reason, I do not find it particulary attractive; I can't come to grips with cutting it. About 14 years ago, back in High school, I was a performer and musician and I was in band. In my 20's I stuggled with addiction and was in and out of jobs for 10 years. I feel like now I've finally come around full circle and my true self is here. the only thing is that, I am conformed because the entire area I reside in is right wing. And though I have right wing values; I have sort of a left wing appearance. People mistake me for some pothead, or liberal, or possible druggy, or freak, etc.

I do want to move to Los Angeles. I have a dream to start a band and become a performer once again. Long hair is just part of that identity for me. I can honestly say I have not felt comfortable with my hair down anywhere, but Los Angeles, interestingly enough. People in Los Angeles gravitated to me when I had my hair down. People in all other places, including my home town, tend to shy away or treat me with indifference when my hair is down. For some strange reason, Los Angeles, having long hair is sort of like, an exhaultation; It was a great feeling; hell, I even had tourists taking photos of me! That's my dream, anyway, and if we can't dream, what's the point of life?

I think I'm not going to cut this hair, because every centimeter of these strands signifies the a month in battle against societal norms. Yes, sometimes it's dirty, fringy, and I look hellish when I'm ungroomed and unkempt; but then again somtimes I feel that if we are human beings and individuals are allowed to flourish as who we are in an unconventional and unbiased society; then long hair can be colorful and beautiful and exemplify the human spirit in us males. Thank you for reading and I hope you understand.

Still I can't think of a crowd who will enjoy this more and a reminder won't hurt.

Hello guys :) i just wanted to post my official 2 and a half year progress pic. I have learned alot about myself, and my hair type during this hair growth journey. A few times, i had contemplated on cutting my hair but it was shortlived. I feel that i have slowed down growth wise but i think that is because my hair is wavy and curls up on the ends. I turned 37 years old in October, only air dry my hair and take biotin pills daily. I am overall happy with my hair progress, and look foreard to achieving more length. Take care all !!

Hey all, I've come to this forums as a last resort before giving up on growing my hair out and cutting it off. I've been growing it out for just over 6 months and it's gone terrible. As you can see in the picture above its a mop that I can't do anything with. If you have any advice at how I could try style it it would be appreciated. I have tried wearing a hat I bought but my hair is so thick it doesn't look good (I'm thinking about trying a different hat). Some other questions that I have are:

1. If I keep growing it will I eventually be able to style it like "Harry Styles" (Before he cut it)
2. Should I get it trimmed? (Havent cut it since I've been growing it out).
3. What products should I use and when? (Have been washing it every couple days, that's all)

All advice would be greatly appreciated and would help stop me wasting 6 months of growth by cutting it off.

Cheers in advance :)

Current Progress...

Hello gents old and new. I used to be a regular poster on this great site (to which I owe having been able to endure two awkward stages). This place didn't only teach me about hair, the site and the journey really teach a lot of life lessons. Altogether we become stronger and more able to deal with all the things presented to us. To judgemental people we say it's just hair but when you have to learn to be who you are and embrace it, it's a lot more.

I sort of stopped posting and just lurked at times. Life had me busy with stuff. Over the past 5 to 6 years I've been adding tattoos and piercing stuff to my long hair. I love it all. I've been lucky to run into very talented artists and I love the meaning and the statement my ink conveys.. My hair has been long all this time (I couldn't see it any other way). I briefly considered dreadlocks but changed my mind. I guess the hair is just so normal to me by now that the need to come here for advice ceased to exist. I'm back for the community though and today I have a big update. I changed my hair color. I always wanted this color and in the end it is my hair. It IS VERY DRYING to do this but I was ready to pay the price, with common sense it's not so bad. Please don't give me too much of a hard time for all the chemicals. Peace.

Here is where I am on current progress!

Hey, Gang! Thought I'd post a couple of recent pictures. Been growing about four years, but not without trims along the way. I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

I don't seem to get any guff about my hair, and if anybody thinks I look 'like a girl' they seem to keep it to themselves. But I'm going on 60 years old now, so probably the age gap that LHIA refers to is in effect.

In June I moved from Gold Coast, Australia to Colorado Springs, USA. I don't notice any difference in the way I'm received by others in the two places, although CS has a reputation as being a conservative place. BTW, as I'm retired military i am frequently on the area military bases for various reasons and no discernable reactions there unless it's behind my back.

I'm retired and not seeking work at this time, so employer/potential employer reaction is not a factor.

My hair is now mid-back length. I'm maintaining this length until I decide to grow it further. Monthly trims, besides maintaining the length, seem to keep the ends looking nice. It's not always as curly as in the pictures, just after a washing. I like it curly but am unwilling to use a curling iron or some such to keep it that way all the time.

Hope all are well. For the Jews on the board, shana tova and a good inscription for the next year!

Now that I have the issue, I have no idea how to handle it (I don't want to use dandruff shampoo because from what i understand it tends to be rougher than regular shampoo).

Any advice would be appreciated, my dudes

Reflections on the Journey

Last post:

Been reflecting on the journey of growing long hair lately and felt like I'd share some of the thoughts I had. It's super long since its basically me splicing together some journal entries, but it might be interesting to someone.

One of the things that a lot of people mention when they grow out their hair are all the comments they get. People criticizing them, telling them to cut, etc. It seems like the majority of people aren't supportive, though there are probably a few out there for everyone. I have been thinking about why I thought that was and realized that people generally have a hard time with change and growing hair out changes what you look like relative to the mental image/perception they have of you, and they don't get what they expect.
I also found it interesting that people don't seem to see the growth as continuous. For me it seems to just inch along bit by bit every day. But then again I am looking in the mirror, watching the growth carefully, and experiencing all the small changes every day. There is no reason for them to notice such incremental differences and I think they just pick up on the big milestones or tune in every few weeks or months to notice something's different when it finally reaches a breaking point and triggers the mental alert that you aren't the same. It must be strange to see someone who has always had a buzz cut with hair getting in their eyes, or see them from behind and not recognize them because their hair is down passed their collar. The most comments I got was the first time I wore a ponytail out. Loose long hair to up is a dramatic difference in appearance and all it takes is 10 seconds and a hair tie.
Fortunately it seems that people start to mellow out after a while. I think part of that is because when you are growing your hair out something is significantly different every few months and there's no chance to really digest what is going on and settle into a new status quo before it is different again. At some point your hair is just long, they've seen you with a ponytail or bun, etc. Finally they get a chance to establish and new baseline image of you and whether they like it or not they are getting what they expect.
I have also found it interesting how I have changed. I got to see my hair grow ever so slowly and so my image of myself has simple shifted incrementally to one of me with long hair, but I had a ton of milestones to mark my progress. Experiencing new sensations with my hair getting in my eyes, then mouth. Hair brushing on my neck. Hair blowing around in a breeze. The difference between how it feels in a ponytail or bun or loose. Even more negative types of things like getting it stuck in a zipper of a jacket are kind of exciting.
Really interesting to me though, has been to realize all of the different habits and routines that I have developed as my hair has gotten longer. There are so many things you don't have to do or think about when your hair is short, and most of them a really small reflex type things now. I brush my hair out of my face without think about it or pull it out of the way when I put on my back pack or zip up a jacket. I comb it every morning and evening and had to make time at first, but now its just built in to my routine. I have to make sure I've got the right shampoo and conditioner and maybe some oil. I always have hair ties around after learning the hard way and being without in times of need a few times. I had to learn how to tie a nice ponytail or how to bun my hair, plus how to comb and brush it properly so I didn't destroy my scalp or hair.
Most of those things are milestones I made note of on the journey, but then you just kind of pass them and they are done. You don't consciously think about how you are incorporating them, but it is crazy how they really build up in the end. While I would have loved to instantly have long hair, looking back I'm not sure I could have handled it. I am positive I would have gotten frustrated with all of these things. It is definitely fortunate that I had a chance to learn and build them up over time to the point that I don't have to give any of them a second thought any more.
Long hair has also really taught me a lot about confidence. I thought I was relatively immune to peer pressure compared to some of my friends and classmates, but I realized how much I cared about what people thought. With some things that matters, but hair is just hair in the end and shouldn't be as big of a deal as it is. It was tough getting through the awkward stage and ignoring everything. Then I realized I was really self-conscious about wearing it differently around people. I would wear a ponytail in my room, but whip it out if someone knocked on the door for a week or 2 before I got up the guts to let anyone see. Slowly though I have embraced my hair and have learned not to worry so much about how I am perceived and that is a big benefit to the journey.

HI,

I've had long hair for about 2 years now. In the past month or so, It has become knotted and the knot is getting bigger.

Is my only recourse to cut it off? If so, I'm going to have to cut the rest of it too as it's going to look bad to have long hair on my sides but not in the back, where the knot is.

I'd be curious to hear if there's any other recourse. Thanks.

Well i did it.

I trimmed off about eight inches to even up the ends.

I got tired of how bad the ends looked so I chopped off about
eight inches. I hete to lose that much length but I also hated
the way the ends looked.

So now the hair is at nipple length, i'm wondering if I can get it
longer without damage. Using coooanut oil didn't seem to help the
ends. I'm at a loss as to what is causing the damage to ends.
Old age? (I'm 62 years old now.)

Hopefully this will be as short as it gets.

in August I hit my 62 month mark of hair growth and I decided to make a little series of videos to document my hair going from "dry" to oily in 8 days. I thought it could be interesting for those who have long hair or want to have long hair. Also some of the videos turned out to be really good! ...and some didn't, I'm still learning how to make videos.
Anyway, thank you for the support I've received from you on this board! I hope you're well,
cheers,
Philip

Keep the beard or the hair?

I started growing both of them at about the same time. I have always had a relatively short beard but never anything even approaching long hair. I've wanted to try long hair for years and guess all the hipsters growing it out finally got me to take the plunge. I have really been enjoying my mountain man look, but my wife says there is just too much hair at this point and I have to choose one or the other. I am fairly certain she'd prefer I cut my hair. She likes the beard (always has), though perhaps would like it trimmed up a bit. I have been leaning the other way though. I have found it a lot harder to grow out my hair and really enjoy having it long. It's a whole different feel and I am a fan of the look. I was joking with her that it had just hit puberty since I can finally tie it back comfortably but it is more of a tuft than tail, but she has been insistent. Been giving it some thought but figured I get some opinions on here since I have come here for inspiration from time to time and you all seem like a kind-hearted bunch. This is definitely a biased audience, but I guess I am a biased petitioner. Appreciate any opinions on the matter or my growth.

on a YouTube video is probably on this guy.

I'd like to officially welcome Philip who has now been entered in our Users' Directory. You have one outstanding mane and you have already served as a major inspiration to me as I'm currently trying for terminal and noticing increasing length. I apologize for it taking a while for the registration to be completed.

I'd like to extend the invitation to all who have been posting for at least a month - you're welcome to send a photo and a description of yourself and you'll be added to the directory. Once you've been added, your avatar will show in your posts as long as you enter the email address that you used when you applied.

I feel like Mickey Rourke from the wrestler. A bit aged in life but down and out. For a while I was unemployed and having trouble landing a job for the longest time.

I am a Rocker at heart. Deep down inside I am holding on to a dream to be in a band. HA, I just woke up having some coffee and in my dream I was surrounded by like 6 guitars.

Point is this. My hair is down to my upper/mid chest in length. But getting a job was important. After sleeping around on peoples couches for the past year and everyones perception has changed towards me since I grew my hair out long, it's been pretty rough.

Hell, I'm still wary of the police even more so as sometimes longhairs are more of a target than in normal. Kinda like that song by Crosby Stills Nash Young where he "almost cuts his hair" - Maybe we been there.

So I put on my game face. I was really attacking the job market with everything I got. Sending out resumes like a mad man. You would be surprised what wearing dress pants, an ironed shirt and tie would do for a man bun and a clean shaven face.

It's like I don't even have the man bun. I'm an undercover Long hair. I've been able to land several job interviews, 1 was a managerial position in training. I was questioned on the hair once. The other interviews the man bun wasn't even brought up.

I just started a training program to be a bus driver. No qualms or hang ups about the hair so far. The plan is to work and save money. Then to start the freakiest, sickest band you ever seen on the side.

I'm a psycho freak wild child rocker on the inside, but don't tell anyone I said that. So to you guys out there who think you can't make it in the real world or feel discriminated against. You can always go under cover like I did. Get real meticulous on the way you dress and tie the hair back and put on your game face.

I'm a spy for now but when the weekends come watch out.

Parents, being typical strict asian parents can't stand it, but I'm pushing through and loving it more every day.

Hi everyone! I have been quiet for a few months, I thought it's time for another post. Here is a portrait which I like. My ends are not in the picture, so I'll write you a hair update: It's at tailbone length, ends are getting frizzier than before but I'm still wanting it to grow longer.

Keep it growing! :)

I just wanted to let those of you with whom I've kept in touch via Facebook that I've had my account there permanently deleted. Call me old fashioned, but speaking for myself, life was better (and time put to better use) before the advent of that type of social media. I've been an artist all my life, and have noticed that, over the past several years, my actual creative output has undergone a tremendous downturn. Some of this can be attributed to actual time wasted online, largely on Facebook, and also to the truly mind-altering effect social media has on people, even when they're not using it (see the article linked below for more information on this topic).

I'm grateful that the MLHH has remained unchanged, over the many years that I've been a member of this community. The format of our beloved hyperboard is beautiful in its simplicity, and requires a degree of "human-ness" that I feel has been lost in the quagmire of newer forms of online social interaction. Thanks to EVERY ONE OF YOU, who have made it (and continue to make it) what it is.

Our friend, the late, great Bill Choisser, said it best: "When I dream, I never dream I'm on Facebook."

It’s been busy here on the bamboo farm – one of our best years ever, plus I’m still working full time as an R.N., so it’s been just crazy in my neck of the woods, but I like being busy, so no complaints. In addition to everything else, we’ve been finalizing the plans for the new home that we are going to be building. My only downside to growing it out is my hair is thinning on top as opposed to when I was younger and I will post a pic soon.

This picture inspired me to re-grow my hair. How cool is it? :-)

I trim my hair every 6 months taking off as little as need be but can't progress :( Can anyone share some tips with us on maximising the chances of achieving said goal of a beautiful long healthy mane?

At new years eve 2015-16

I BUZZED my shoulder length hair off!!! From 13 inches to 3 mm (0.12 inches?) in just 5 minutes.

My hair has grown since then and its now at 7cm or 2.75 inches.

My hair and myself also suffering from my divorce. After 5 years of marriage I am now single at age 31, and have my own place since July 1st. We didn´t got any kids...

So. Alt 1: Should I get Hair extensions.

Or. Alt 2: Should I just take my vitamins an just wait 2 years for it to grow out.

All tips kindly appreciated =)

I was alot on this forum around 2008-2009 prioe my marriage. Ill post a picture from 2008. Same hair length as i Buzzed off in New year.

Thanks for the kind and open atmosphere in this forum. I feel very welcome here.

Before I begin my rant, let me just say that, for the most part, I am really enjoying this forum and I do not wish to offend anyone. However, when I feel offended I will not be silent about it. I feel an obligation to speak out, in the hope that I might create some positive change in the world. I have been a civil rights activist for most of my life. How people treat each other is very important to me. Although I am not at all a religious person, I do subscribe to the adage of Do Unto OthersÂ…

There is a high level on consciousness on this forum about people being treated differently, or poorly, because of the length of their hair (or even just being perceived differently or poorly). I think that we can all agree that to make broad assumptions or stereotypes about men with long hair is just not right. We are a very diverse group of men and to say that all men with long hair are [fill in the blank], is in my opinion a display of ignorance. To actually say that directly to a man with long hair displays a lack of respect and sensitivity. We should evaluate others based on what is in their heads, not what is on their heads. I have seen a great deal of sensitivity and respect on this forum for people who are different than the “norm”.

I am writing this in the hope of raising awareness that men with receding hair lines, men who are balding, or who are bald, whatever that means (at what point does a receding hairline morph into BALD?) deserve the same respect and consideration as anyone else. To make broad assumptions or stereotypes about men with balding hair is just not right. I do not think that comments made on this forum about balding men were in any way intentionally malicious or meant to offend. I imagine that all of us at times have offended others without meaning to, so please take this in a spirit of friendship. I think it is important to have open communication and let friends know how you feel. In the short time that I have been on this forum my bald-headed appearance has been referred to as looking like a walnut. I have been told that balding guys hate buns and that balding guys are jealous people because we do not have as much hair as other people. Please think about this.

If you think I am being overly sensitive, there may be some truth in this (my husband has been telling me, “You’re just too sensitive” for 22 years). But how I feel is how I feel and I just thought it important to get it off my chest (or head, as the case may be). And while I’m at it I’ll post a photo from last week when James and I were vacationing in the mountains of North Carolina. This is about nine and a half months growth on the places where it is growing : )

Hi all, I'm at around 7 inches now, about chin-length, and I plan to grow it until it's maybe a few inches past shoulder length. I've been there before, and I love how it looks when it's a little wavy (it can get like that a little when it hits my shoulder/collar), though usually it's really straight and I don't really like it like that. I've read a little about curling but I don't want to do anything that can damage it (i.e., heat, perms). I've read you can just use curlers with wet hair, and in the Victorian Era people just wet their hair and used different methods, of course that only lasts until you wash it again.

Anyway I curious about any advice or tips people here might have. Thanks

Thinking of Going for Terminal (again!)

Some may remember I tried for terminal length about three years ago. I definitely got it to my longest ever but then got discouraged with my ends and cut it shorter. My hair hasn't been cut since last summer and I've been pretty much doing benign neglect. It's starting to feel quite long again now so the thought occurred to me of trying again. I also think of Bill and other longtime longhairs here who have grown to terminal and feel a bit incomplete having never explored that territory. Perhaps this might be my little tribute to Bill.

This was my hair yesterday, a few hours after being washed. The frizz factor is very much in evidence.

This was taken this evening. Day two hair with less frizz...

My son was in the backyard yesterday with me and wanted to get in on the fun. This was his first "hair" picture with me.

For comparison, this was about the longest it got last time. I'm not sure but I'm thinking I'm probably a year away from reaching that point.

I'm not going to change my activities to do this. I know cycling takes a heavy toll. I'll continue to braid it while doing this. What I am going to pay attention to more is detangling with lots of conditioner while in the shower. If I skip this for a few showers, I'm left with severe tangles that are not only bad for the hair but try my patience. I also haven't used coconut oil in ages and might try doing an application of that every so often.

Is there anyone else who has never tried for terminal length who might be interested in joining me?

Happy Memorial Day to you folks, I hope all of you are doing great.

I can’t begin to describe how surreal it is to have rediscovered this board and how it hasn’t changed one bit in all these years. It was in 2002 as a 19 year old that I first stumbled upon this board and started posting my pics and questions. In an era devoid of “social media”, I was so happy to have found a little place on the internet where we all spoke unfettered about our love for long hair.

As I turned 20 and headed out into doing an MBA, I promptly cut my hair. Only to grow it back between 2006-2008. But I honestly thought that was it – the last hurrah. But here I am once again, still working in the corporate world and still finding a way to keep my hair long.

IÂ’m putting together a chronological collage so to speak just to share the journey since the first time I came upon this board.

Right now, IÂ’ve been growing my hair since May 2014. It feels good to have completed the two year anniversary.
On a side note, I feel that my ends have curled up quite a bit and my hair especially at the back isnÂ’t growing as fast as it should. IÂ’ve also noticed that my hair at the ends is very frizzy and I have some split ends as well.
I havenÂ’t had any trims during the last 2 years at all. Do you think it would be beneficial to have a minor trim in order to get rid of the split ends and the boost the growth of the hair? Any other suggestions or tips you might have as well would also be more than welcome.

PS: The fact that the look and feel of the board is still the same as the early 2000s is something else :)

Hey there!

I've been lurking around here for a very long time and my last "update" was from 24 month mark.

I must confess, curly hair looks cool but, it takes me an hour or more below the shower to detangle it using conditioner after using the shampoo. I don't want to give up and using chemicals on it to be easier to comb and reduce the volume, I like the way it is (Not my family, they've trying to convince me to use the "Brazilian Keratin Treatment" or by other words "Getting it Straight", but I don't care of what they say anymore so I just keep ignoring then)

Here's some new pics I took, it's reaching 40 months (3 years and 3 months) by the next few weeks without any trims.

And here what looks like when a curl is "pulled":

I dunno about the current lenght of it, because since it's curly, it tricks me out everytime I try to measure it but I know it's growing because it's getting heavier by the time hahaha.

Take care people!

This journey has taught me:
-PATIENCE

-to be myself
-to have a strong will
-long term commitment

It's temporary labor, although it feels great. Before, I haven't labored seriously since September 2015 and getting rejected from various job interviews.

So a bit of a cool story comes as follows!

At my high school, one of the teachers there has hair that nearly touches his shoulders. Now, keep in mind that he usually scowls, and is sort of intimidating looking, especially with the long hair. So yesterday, I decided to send him an email, telling him how awesome his long hair is, how he should grow it longer, and how his hair gives me motivation to grow mine long. I saw him get the email, and I saw him smile for the first time. I didn't really think he would message me back, but he did, saying that we should have a "lengthy discussion" (his words not mine) tomorrow morning about our hair journeys! I'm really excited, especially since the conversation is with a male teacher with long hair. I'll message back on this board after the conversation.

Friends and fellow members of MLHH,

It was with great sadness that we learned this morning that Bill Choisser passed away last night. Longtime members know Bill well. My first post at MLHH was way back in 1999 but Bill was with this site from its inception. Not only that, but he wrote most of the code for the siteÂ’s operations both for the board itself and the behind-the-scenes parts.

Bill was a remarkable engineer and extremely smart with computers. In fact, Bill was pretty much smart at everything. His writing was amazing, impeccable with perfect grammar and spelling, but it went well beyond that. He wrote in such a way to reach the heart and soul of men for whom having long hair is very important. His seminal treatise “On Being a Longhair” found in the Links section, remains the best guide for such men. It speaks to all men with this interest but it especially is geared to those of us with longhair identities. Such men simply do not feel whole without having long hair and as a born longhair himself, Bill could relate in a special way. This document has been translated into several languages.

Bill had his own battles before he finally could become his full self and grow out his hair. On a personal level, this meant so much to me as I was born into a high-control organization that hates longhairs. I suffered considerable angst as I wrestled with my longhair identity while also being so indoctrinated with other beliefs. Bill and I shared many an email as he helped me to see that God couldnÂ’t possibly be so petty.

Bill served as one of the first moderators at the site before the moderators were even named. Bill then set up guidelines when the level of activity at MLHH warranted a group of named moderators. He continued to serve not only as a moderator but also the tech crew chief responsible for keeping MLHH running. He helped us deal with many technical issues that those of us without deep knowledge of computers and code would know nothing about.

It was an honor to finally meet Bill in December 2014. My family was visiting San Francisco and I was able to meet Bill, his partner Larry and Ken. We first met at a park and then walked to a restaurant for lunch. We kept on a walking tour of other parts of the city before finally stopping at his house. Bill was in pretty good health at that point having mostly recovered finally from a very serious health scare that first occurred in 2006. In the months after I saw him, Bill reported being able to walk long distances again. Unfortunately, this good health was not to stay his for very long.

IÂ’d like to pass along my condolences to his partner Larry and the many friends of his who are mourning the loss of this great man.
The attached photo is from that day I met Bill in San Francisco.

Something funny happened this morning.

My wife of 34 years mentioned that my hair was getting fairly long and that I should think of stopping letting them grow when they reach waist length . All these years she’s been used to see me with very short business like hair cuts and never really supported my life long dream of having very long hair.... But to her credit, she has recently stopped criticizing my long hair since I was given very positive feedbacks in front of her from quite a few women (and 2 men!) during our latest vacation together. But I want to go to terminal length! So I answered “NO dear!” and mentioned “God willing, I intend to grow them much longer...at least until I’d be able to tickle my ba...s with them!!!”. I started to laugh! She turned around and gave me sort of a smile. Is she finally turning around and starting to “like” my long hair?... I don’t know but I sure hope so!

HereÂ’s a pic from this morning.

Anyway, has this situation with your S.O. ever happened to any of you?

Hi Guys, it's been a long time since I've posted here... Here's my 26th month update with a couple of trims...

I thought some of you would be interested in this video and link I found on MSN: A Norwegian naval officer is getting hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers because he's basically Thor in real life. His name is Lasse Matberg, and he's a military officer. Apparently Norway doesn't require the regulatory buzz cuts employed in the US. There's a shot of him in uniform towards the end of the video clip with his hair up in a loose 'man-bun'. In addition, he's done modelling, and is an athlete who has competed in multiple Tough Mudder challenges. Link added below goes to his Instagram account. The comparison to Thor is pretty self-explanatory. Copy & Paste into a new browser window/tab to view video; http://a.msn.com/09/en-us/BBsFY86?ocid=se

All help is very appriciated and if I indeed am suffering from hair loss, advices on what should I do about it is really appriciated as well.

Thanks in advance and have a lovely day.

To begin with, I used to think I was one of the only guys at my school who wanted long hair. I realize that is not the case.

This week, I have talked to about 8 guys who want or have long hair, some of them people you never would've guessed wanted long hair (Honors students, track star, a teacher, and a police officer!) all of them want or have hair at or below the shoulders (one has hair at around his belly button), and nearly half of them want hair below the pecs or near the waist. I guess a lot of guys want long hair after all. The point I'm trying to make to us young guys is to not be discouraged. There are A LOT of guys who want long hair, and most of them would gladly talk about it to you (I am actually meeting with a group of guys once a month to talk about our hair growth!) Try to reach out to someone who wants or is trying to grow their hair long. If you have parents that won't let you grow it until college or until your senior pictures are taken, talking with another guy about it really helps. Most likely, someone will understand the struggle!

Sorry about this long post, but it needed to be said!

Just remember, there are more guys than you think who want long hair, many of which probably sit next to you in study hall, or eat lunch with you, or whatever!

He was Asian, and his hair was black. His long thick tail was dyed a light green. OK, a bit odd, but itÂ’s his style, and I liked it. I always enjoy seeing someone express their own style. Driving home, I saw a tall guy (about 25-30) standing on the sidewalk in front of a store talking to a woman. He had his long red hair in an almost 2 foot braid. As I said, a double good day.

Hi my name is Phil, I'm 26 years old.

I find it so interesting that many people here say: "I've always wanted long hair!" - and for me it is kind of the same. I've accepted and liked my short hairstyles, but I was very fascinated by the thought of having long hair. So let me tell you something about my journey.
I've been growing out my hair for more than 4 years, since June 2011. Not starting from a buzzcut but from the middle of the nose. Making the decision is really exciting but then you just have to wait. So I read a a lot about long hair and I found this hyperboard and Bill Choissers On Being a Longhair pages which were incredibly helpful for me.
Sometimes it was hard, especially in the beginning, but with shoulder lenght hair and after that, people around me were showing more acceptance and even support - and I'm very grateful and lucky to have that - sometimes from random strangers, which pretty cool :D
I also think that it gives me strength, which sounds a bit weird but maybe you've made similar experiences.

So with all this happening, it would be a shame if I didn't say hi and thank you. You are such a lovely, encouraging and inspiring community. Thank you!

The image was taken in June 2015 and as you can see I have straight brown hair.

Case in point:

I went to visit my wife in the hospital and on her floor is a male nurse with long hair in a pony tail. Not as long as mine but it was interesting to see.

And while that is occurring many women are wearing their hair shorter. I can still go into stores, offices, ride mass transit and find that most of the women still have short hair. So much for the claim that if you have long hair you look like a girl.

Hi, guys! I've been a way for a while, and pretty busy. I recently had a big, annoying move, my mother-in-law had some serious health issues come up, and things have been pretty hectic.

My hair is now past my shoulders, and I never thought it would get that there. I guess the old adage of "just wait, hair grows" is true. I have discovered that I don't actually have straight hair, I have wavy hair. It seems shorter that in is because it insists upon curling up over my shoulders. It also gets tangled ridiculously easy. I've also noticed that it isn't all one color, my roots seem darker than the rest. I've no idea what that's about.

I've included some pics to show my progress. The first is older, and is my hair in a french braid. My mother-in-law did it. I cannot do it to save my own life.

The second is more recent, from last month, and shows where my hair basically is now. You can plainly see how crazy the end of my hair is.

Having grown up in this extremely high control group, I was exposed early on to their hatred of male longhairs but only recently have they taken to publishing videos condemning this group of humans. If you value your freedom, your individuality, your ability to express yourself and be authentic and above all, your hair, do NOT get involved with this group. They will love bomb you when you first get interested and will only mention your hair after they get their tentacles into you. By then their programming may have already taken hold and you will soon find yourself mutilated and your long hair gone.

I’m posting a link to a video made by an ex-Witness in which he offers a rebuttal to one of their videos. Go to 47:40 – 49:35 to see the part where he addresses their obsession with this topic. I just felt it would be a good idea to expose the hatred of this religion and the way they seek mandatory conformity at all costs.

Rather than support, felt ashamed for having long hair.

It would've been cool to have the family member style my hair, and saved a few bucks. Seems like I have to find a proper stylist.

My question is, does anyone have any recommendations about choosing a stylist?

I really don't know how she found it but I laughed out loud. Never really knew my picture (awful quality now that I look at it again) got featured on a Facebook group discussing the website but it really made me feel nostalgic and kinda felt the need to post an update.

I've still got the hair and don't have any plans on cutting it short anytime soon. I've actually trimmed it a couple of times though, mostly because the ends were looking really damaged but after a while I've began questioning whether or not hair longer than waist length would be a problem. I'd certainly appreciate some input from long hair connoisseurs on the matter.

Regardless, it's good to be back and I do hope to hear form you all. Also, please ignore the matted look of my hair on the pic, I had just washed it and didn't bother drying it so there's that.

I was browsing the internet and found another famous long haired

May I present Sir Isaac Newton..........

I had long hair and cut it due to other long hair guys. Now I want to grow it out again but keep feeling depressed like what's the point. The reason is I notice a lot of long hair guys wear hats, tie hair back mostly the entire time or complain about grooming. I feel like if there hiding their hair they must be ashamed so that makes me feel ashamed too that if there hiding hair why should I keep mine long. Another reason is I seen Raul Taylor's video that he cut hair and that made me depressed thinking it's wrong having long hair. I really want long hair but don't understand why they grow long hair if they hide it and than it makes me feel that it's wrong having long hair. I thought a lot long hair guys would show their long hair and be proud of it and show others that they have right to have long hair. So mainly my problem is I feel alone and awkward since I see others hide their long hair and it makes me feel it's wrong having long hair.

Hi everyone. Passing on the hair updates. There are times when I should get it cut off, unemployment can be a pain in the ass at times. Definitely not looking for pity or anything, although the thoughts creep up from time to time.

Greetings from Holland

As some of you may recall I recently joined the board,I have been growing my hair for 5 years. I work for the landscape maintenance company which means spending a lot of time outdoors, here are some photos of me (and my hair of course) taken when at work. Just want to share them :)

When at work I usually wear my hair in a braid (it is practical), but on the day the pix were taken I just put my hair up in a ponytail

Punks, Hippies and Long Hair

From my understanding punk rockers hated long hairs during the 1970s and to some extent during the 1980s, but the animosity no longer exists between the two groups.

granted, punks had a reason to be angry. they were tired of hearing the same old hippie era music which is now considered "classic Rock" music.

I don't think they were angry at long haired guys because they had long hair, but because of what they represented at that time and the punks wanted change.

I think change is good. today's "classic rock" enthusiasts are more than likely to be sporting short haircuts. I know a few and none of them have long hair.

I hope long haired guys become more common among the various independent music scenes instead of feeling comfortable with the metal and classic rock scenes.

if a long haired guy considers himself a nonconformist he will go on an adventure and check out various scenes even if the band members may not appear to be long hair "friendly". appearances can be deceiving.

Hi everyone,
As promised, here is a couple of photos of my current hair length. I thank you all for your encouragement to my post below! I cut my hair back in October of 2015. I really don't know why I cut it to be honest. Sounds strange but what's done is done. I can say that one reason was that I felt my hair wasn't looking its best. Another reason is that I had some news from the doctor that could have had something to do with it. One thing I can tell you all is that shortly after getting it cut, I missed my long hair. And it wasn't even that long yet!

So, now I am starting over. And believe me, it's going to be a test of my patience. I am one of the most patient people you would ever know. But, of course, I know good things come to those who wait. And I shall wait and enjoy my journey back to where I need to be. My health seems to be holding out which I am very happy about. I truly appreciate everyone's kind responses to my post and for welcoming me back! You guys are a hell of a group and I love all the updates lately. Awesome hair and I hope you keep it growing! Now to my hair. Still growing and is close to 15" long now. Wearing it both in a ponytail and loose. I was wearing it exclusively in a tail, but kind of like the loose feel now that my hair is over 15" long. My goal now is 24" minimum, and preferably to my belt.

Hey all!

Greetings from Thailand. I made my move here a few weeks back - but all is not well in paradise...

My shoulder length curly hair is hating the humidity... I'm really struggling!

Low down: I don't shampoo wash, I co-wash once in a while. I rinse with cold water after; i only t-shirt dry gently; I use Argan oil - the whole shebang and every bit of online googling and reddit advice etc, but I get horrible frizz halos and now my hair is tangling horribly also! Wash day looks like a dead rat has fallen off my head :/

I'm not keen on using chemical products - so any advice from people who also live in humid places? Especially guys with curly hair.

Thanks gents! Pardon the long read!

Well, maybe more than slight - about 2ft!
Calf-length just wasn't practical for me, so I finally let my other half take the scissors to my mane. It's now around belt length, which feels ridiculously short and although it's about two weeks since my "trim" it still doesn't feel right.

Plus points? It dries in half the time and I have more styling options than I used to have, not to mention the fact that it takes less than half the time to plait it.

Minus points? I miss it and I can't just coil it up into a bun and expect it to stay there unsecured.

Who knows, I may trim it again in another ten years' time.

It's a variety called Diane, with red flowers and quite a subtle fragrance.

Do you guys think that having long hair may play a part (for some men) in helping build and retain a healthy and stable mind? I was pondering this when I walked down the hall and saw one of my old buddies from middle school. Back then, he used to be a pretty unhappy kid, rarely smiled, and almost always wore black. He had a crew cut then. Now, he smiles all the time, stands up straighter, wears clothing outside of the color black, and his hair now falls a little past his shoulders. I also have noticed that whenever I get a haircut (My parents make me get them, since I'm in high school) and whenever it gets cut, I feel emotionally unstable and feel more anxious about things that I could deal with when my hair was longer (the longer it got, the better I felt). Is this the case for you guys, and do you think it's a genetics thing, or a psychological thing?

Hi, I'm Porter, just started grad school. Decided to grow my hair out with the intent of wearing the oh so popular man bun as it seemed like a fun thing to try. Suffered through the awkward stage, but survived, if barely. Wore my man bun proudly for a short while then realized that growing long hair is addicting and I didn't want to stop at shoulder length and so I have been pushing on from there. Generally wear it in a ponytail these days despite the fact it is not "cool" like a bun, but I find it suits me better and I like the feeling of it moving around when I walk, turn my head, etc. as silly as that is.
Not sure how much longer I will grow it, but definitely won't cut, and wanted to introduce myself on this site as I have lurked for a few months and have definitely transitioned to being a true longhair I think.

To those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere, we are smack-dab in the middle of the dead of winter (yes, even in California we have such a thing). But I'm already anxious for spring -- which here in coastal Northern CA, we don't usually see the first signs of spring flowers blooming until sometime in February... OMG, that's almost a whole month away!

Here's a pic that Bill & Larry took of me last year in late April, when they came out to visit the little rose garden that I planted and take care of (where I work primarily as a cook in the town of Castro Valley).

Any pics that will follow this one will be completely off-topic; but since there are a lot of fellow gardening and rose enthusiasts in this community, I might as well share them now.... Why should I suffer with Spring Fever all alone, when I can torture other folks here in the Northern Hemisphere along with me? (LOL)

And as far as you Southern Hemisphere longhairs go: I am SO DAMN JEALOUS of you being in the middle of summer right now!!

- Ken

Since winter is a great time to PLAN a garden, I'll share a few gardening "secrets" that I've learned over the years (for those interested in this off-topic)...

Companion planting is nothing new: it's one of the most ancient all-organic methods of toxic-free pest control, both for vegetable gardens and ornamental gardens alike. More popular in Europe than in America (often referred to as "Cottage style" in the UK, for example), to me, it is more aesthetically pleasing to look at than more formal styles of garden design.

In this pic, the tall spikes of Digitalis purpurea (AKA Common Foxglove) look great next to the round flowers of the roses. Below that is a silvery-grey foliaged plant called Stachys byzantina (AKA "Lambs Ears"), which has subtle mauve flowers that get tall & narrow as well. These Foxglove plants do a "job"in the garden, besides just looking pretty: the roots (and the entire plant actually) are poisonous to gophers. When the rose roots intermingle with the Foxglove, the gophers leave the rose roots alone (which otherwise would eat every single rose they can get their munchy little teeth on)! The gophers also tend to leave the Lambs Ear plants alone, too -- although not as "guaranteed" as the Foxglove.

Goes to show that you don't have to cut your hair short to be successful. this guy should be the new role model for businessmen!

Hi everyone! I'm Kuramo. I introduced myself 5 months ago and have said I'm from Mexico City and another things.

I don't want to write something about me, but something that near all long-haired man have to deal: Prejudice

I hate that there are double standards about this not just in English-speaking countries but anywhere in our supposedly civilised countries <--- What a joke!

In my country Mexico, there was a huge polemic around a kid who wanted to grow his hair. He was expelled from school just for let grow his hair with the absolute approval of his parents

http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/articulo/estados/2015/09/22/expulsan-nino-por-llevar-cabello-largo-al-kinder-0

translate with google translator, sorry. There were no english news about this.

The school's staff mistankely believes its rules are above Mexico's Constitution and federal laws which deal with discrimmination against children.

But unlike US's ED, Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) didn't lift a finger. Nothing! Neither they protected the boy nor revocated the permission of the school.

Thanks to things like this lead me to believe that Trump's racist pep talks about Mexico have some (if not many) elements of truth. Laws aren't getting excersied here.

At the other end, Argentina (the most developed latin american country by its HDI) shows a society getting over it and destroying these horrible prejudices.

Why is it that many women with shoulder length hair consider their hair "short" now where if a man has hair barely over his ears it's "long".

how is that long?

for me, shoulder length or longer is what qualifies as long hair, not over the ears and perhaps some women had it much longer than shoulder length previously which is why in their mind "it's short".perhaps "shorter" would be a better way of putting it if that was the case, but short at shoulder length? I would disagree with.

I've noticed that salons seems to have this same idea that "long" for a man is different than a woman. I think it should be universally the same.

regardless of gender, if your hair is shoulder length or longer it's long and if it's chin length or above(regardless of gender) it should be considered short.

would you not agree?

I comb my hair straight back, so eventually, I'd like to do the pony tail thing. What is driving me nuts is, first, I'm starting to get the whole mullet thing going on, and second, since my hair is wavy back there, it looks like s**t. I know I should not cut it and just let it go, but is there anything I can do to make it look less s**tty? I only care because of employment reasons.
