I get asked sometimes by co-workers or complete strangers "when are you going to get a haircut"? Any of you out there have any good responses to this question?

I'm getting sick and tired of all you, whining hippies crying about your hair!! You all look like pathetic girlie men, so do us all a favor, and get a haircut. Here's some news, you might find interesting, scissors don't cost a thing, and you can find them everywhere. Ah, the beautiful sound of buzz-clippers humming in the morning!

A forced haircut :(((

Hello everyone!

I'd first like to introduce myself.. I'm 24 years old and loved long hair since high school days. I live in a tiny but famous place called Singapore and this place have a unique law that requires all male citizens aged 18 and above to go through a compulsory, 30 months (2.5years) military service. I served in it during 1994 to 1996 and afterwhich, I decided to satisfy my innermost desire to grow out my hair (which I REALLY couldn't for the past 21 years with all the school rules etc.).

During the year when I was a freshman in the University, I started to grow my hair out to chin level. Afterwhich, under girlfriend's, family, friends and "self" pressure, I hacked it off (the growth stage is between March 1996 to March 1997). Everybody started to comment that "wow! how handsame you look", "that's more like my boy", "you look so charming", "long hair is really not for you"...etc. Yes, I'm a pisces and really cared for and liked to look in my best. But why must long hair be my nemesis??

After the "mistake" that I've made, I started to grow it out again. This time round, with MORE determination. The growth period this time round was from March to December 1997 (cut again?? You might say). Yes, in December 1997, I hacked them off again but this time, it is totally out of my own will. This is the reason why:

In Singapore, after the compulsory 2.5 years military service, we are supposed to go for an annual training lasting for the next 13 years. Each training stint is about 2 weeks. We supposed to observe ALL military rules for this period of time including a (unreasonably feudal, conservative and opressive I would say), "cut the hair to a standard military cut". I did not know this before my first call up after the compulsory service. I thought that since we had done the compulsory service, subsequent service would entail RESPECT from whatever authorities especially our personal grooming and items, since, furthermore, we are doing EXTRA for the country (which not everybody likes it or have the time for it). But alas, when I booked-in to my first In-Camp Training (ICT) in December 1997 with long hair, they immediately summoned me to the displinary office and told me in a straight and commanding voice to cut off my hair. They even warned me that if I ever have such hair during my subsequent callups, they'll send me to military jail. I felt that I LOST MY RIGHT AS A HUMAN BEING!!!

I endured the training after I had my standard military cut and decided that I should STOP cutting my hair after this service to maximise whatever length I could before the next service (sad but true). And finally, I had the best chance to grow out my hair during the next 2 years and I really did not cut any inch of it. Finally, I got a mid-back length (growth between 8 Dec 1997 to 10 Dec 1999) and sucks...you know what happened again. I was called up again and I really had to part with my hair once more!

This time round, I asked my hairdresser to try and keep intact as much of my cut ponytail as possible. She did it by cutting at the nearest possible point to the root of my hair. Now, I had kept with me 15 inches (1.3 feet) of my cut hair.

I'm really feeling like I've lost something now and really yearned to have my hair back. The system in this country really lacked justification and I really wanted to make it right but with little help. I love this country but in this aspect, it might force me to migrate. I also wanted my hair back immediately but I know it will take another 2 years to have that length. But knowing that I have another military training in March 2001, the conclusion is that, I can NEVER have any length below my shoulder (unless after 35 years old). I'm feeling empty and lost having being oppressed by a country's system, a system that makes a country look like a zoo. How unjustified!

P.S. Pardon me for this long post. Millions of apologies! Thanks so much for "listening/reading" if you've read to this point. Merry Christmas and Happy New Millenium!!

I am trying to let my hair grow out but my wife keeps pressing me to get it cut. What can I do/say to convince her that I should let it grow? My hair is healthy and in all respects looks better longer but she can only seem to think that long hair on guys is too feminine and unprofessional. She has asked me to get an appointment within the next two weeks and I don't know what to do. If I don't get it cut I am afraid that it will result in an argument and I really don't want that to happen. Any advice?

My goal has always been to grow my hair down to my waist. Well, I've gotten there finally (at age 30) and passed it! And I don't want to stop. Anyone out there have hair longer than his rear end? Anyone have pictures of men with hair to the butt or knees? I am so enjoying the feeling that I want to keep going! (And no, I'm not going to post pictures of myself--I'm shy about that.)

Thanks in advance--and thanks for this board, it's been a godsend!

All,

Please bear with me as I work with support to resolve the current problems. If you notice that response time is poor, please do not post messages.

My host has moved my site to a new server (without first notifying me), and the move has not been smooth, to say the least. I have made frequent support calls with hold times exceeding an hour. Besides having terrible performance, my disk quota seems to be changing to a default value. When this happens, you cannot post new messages. Additionally, there is a risk of individual messages or the entire board getting truncated.

I will post an update when the matter seems to have been resolved.

Meanwhile, I was going to clean up the board, but with the current problems, that seems too risky at the moment.

Balding and longhair

My message must have been deleted, so here it is again.

One of my goals in life was to have longhair, at least have it to see if I liked it or not. 2 times I grew it out, longest being past my chin. But both times i cut it due to pressure. Now, at 23, Im trying again. But now Im also beginning to bald. I guess that flowing head of hair is out of the question. Ive had a widows peak all my life but it is just now beginning to recede.

My question is what is everyone's opinion of bald/balding long haired guys? I know some guys can really pull it off like Sean Connery, George Carlin. I just dont really see too many young balding guys with long hair. My fear is that people would view you even worse than just having longhair. Such as "Why doesnt he just cut it and come to the realization he's bald" and stuff like that,

Im just curious. I also wouldnt mind seeing people post pics of themselves that are balding.
Thanks

How to Grow Your Hair Out

Split end lies

A lady at work can't keep her hands off my hair. She braids it everytime we're on shift together. I'm okay with that( not sure her husband would be though). Earlier this week she laid that tired old line on me that I had split ends and needed to get a trim.

I just told her politely that I wasn't going to do it.

When I got home I dug out two magnifying glasses, one I use for photo work and another used for counting threads in fabric. Both magnify the ends of my hair very well.

I only found one split end! and that was just about a 1/4 inch split. All the others were clean cut with no split. What she saw was an optical illusion of two or more hairs together that just look like one hair is split.

So my suggestion is if someone is ragging you about having split ends dig up a good magnifying glass and check them out yourself before you rush off for a trim.

Hey, have any of you fellows who have grown your hair extremely long (i.e to mid back, waist or longer) ever gone through a period of time questioning whether or not to cut it short. For three and a half years I've been resolute about growing my hair long and it is now well down to mid-back, but all of a sudden about a month and a half ago I started struggling with whether to keep my hair long or not.

Part of the problem is that I am about one year into growing out my bangs and hair over my ears (you know, a former mullet style). It still isn't long enough on the top or sides to look good. I remember john (lower case intentional) responding to one of my posts earlier this year about growing out a mullet. He said it takes about two years for it to look good. I guess I'm half way there.

Anyway, I need some encouragement from some of you long-term long hairs. I've extended the "two week" rule to two months and I'm still pretty much resolute NOT TO CUT. However, I still have these thoughts and I don't like it! I would like to know if any others have struggled in this way. THANKS for your input!

Getting Hair Unsnagged from fire engines

My hair is down to my waist. I volunteer as a crisis counselor for the fire dept. Since male firefighters wear their hair long I get a few teases when I'm at a station. I braided my hair before going on duty last shift, thought it would be easier since my tail is also pretty full from using some of the products reccomended here.

When I was cleaning out our rig I raised my head up and somehow snagged the hair above my ear on a zipper pull of a fanny pack hanging from a seat. Whatever I did I was hooked solid. Tried to pull free without being able to see what I was doing. Hoping no one would see me, but my EMT came out just as I gave up,got out my knife, and cut myself free. He was kind and didn't snicker where I could see him.

My hair was a mess from the struggle, so just put it in a pony tail for the night. If I get in a hairy situation I tuck it inside the back of my shirt.

A couple years ago I was riding with an engine company and when the rig bounced my hair snagged on a piece of velcro attached to a helmet that was hanging above me. The firefighters enjoyed that, I didn't.

I wear glasses for distance, and often put them up on the top of my head for close work. Every now and then my glasses hang up there when hair gets tangled in the nose bridges.

Female firefighters with long hair clip it up or do elaborate braids for duty. I don't feel that's an option for me, just not enough in touch with my feminine side to walk into a fire station on duty with a French braid....

Anyone have any suggestions for detangling hair when it gets hung up on stuff. Something other than a crew cut.

recurring Course/Dry hair problem

I have a recurring problem with my mid-back length hair that I can't really figure out and has plaqued me for some time.

My hair will be in good shape as far as softness, tangle free, etc. then all of a sudden it seems I wake up one day or go out in some wind or whatever and it does a 180 change in texture to me. There seems to be no way to soften it back up again or get it as manageable as before unless I go get a slight trim. I've had this problem for a while now and think I've tried everything else I can think of.

Just wanted some thoughts from anyone whether advice, suggestions or a similar situation. Stylists just seem to want to cut, cut, cut.

I have medium length hair, about three and a half inches long. I would like to grow it longer to about seven inches on top, similar to Hugh Grant's haircut. Does anyone have any advice on growing it longer?

The mother of a longhaired boy posted this before the board was corrupted:

Does anyone know of any website like this one but that deal with boy's hair? I have a son with exceptionally long hair and we'd like to find some kindred souls (mothers and sons) to correspond with.

I am amazed at how this thread has grown to dealing with the ills of pedophilia, homophobia, etc., but no one is dealing with the question the poor lady asked!

Because male and female children before puberty look much alike (girlish voices and facial hair, boyish chest and body shape), it's harder to tell what sex they are. And nowadays, little girls don't for the most part wear dresses. There is nothing wrong with this - people should have the right to look like they want. But quite a few people, not having other markers, themselves turn to hair length. When enough people do this, longhaired males before puberty are presented problems that those of us older do not face.

So if mothers, or fathers for that matter, of these children want to talk about those problems, and about strategies, hair styles that work, etc., yeah, including pictures, why can't we let them do that in peace? And why not here? This is an appropriate forum, and the adults here will be supportive - we know what it is like to have long hair and suffer discrimination for it. The adults here also know what is appropriate behavior as concerns children. As with the other infrequent inappropriate behavior which has from time to time appeared, we should support those parents and young longhairs by showing the miscreants the door.
