Over conditioning?

I'm on my third longhair journey and trying to do things right this time and not wind up with damaged hair again that doesn't go much beyond my shoulders. Right now I'm at 10 months from when I buzzed my hair down to 2 inches. So, I've been trying to go all natural by only putting stuff on my head that is out of my kitchen with no chemicals. For shampoo-baking soda and apple cider vinegar with moisturizimg oils-I do that twice a week. On the days I don't use the shampoo I use a hair rinse which is just a combo of some teas (green tea, chamomile, nettle, and reishi mushroom tea and combine this with argan oil. Up to a month ago my hair was looking healthy and a lot fuller than it did when it was long but I had always heard that conditioning daily is very important with long hair. My hair is around 5 inches. Maybe all the oils I'm putting on my head would count as conditioner?

I wasn't sure but decided to start putting Aussie conditioner on my head for a couple minutes each day and fully saturate my hair with it. Now my hair is starting to lose volume and body. It's pretty thin and wavy and if brushed much while dry it gets puffy in areas (I go with a hair pick after light brushing with a soft boars hair brush).

So am I over conditioning? Maybe I'm using way too much? Maybe I don't need conditioner since I'm putting oils in the shampoo and hair rinses each day?

Remember when Maury hated long hair?

I remember seeing a video on YouTube showing clips of Maury Povich and his daytime reality show. The episodes involved women getting their first haircuts in years, much to their dismay, but you all said he and his show did this to men as well!

I don’t think there’s any footage of the episode because it first aired years ago, and it would be copywrite infringement to just post it on the Internet. I wanted to see the men before the parts where they cut their hair and cry over it because I ironically hate drama.

But let me be pessimistic to decrease the urge to watch this episode if I ever have the chance: there’s no way any of those men had anything longer than waist length hair like the women did, but if I’m wrong, please tell me.

By the way, if there’s more than one episode with forced haircuts, let me know about that, too. Then, I can continue my rant on how much Maury hates long hair.

In the wake of the tragedy in Las Vegas here is something to take
your mind off the bad news:

Shampoo once a week. Shampoo, rinse, then shampoo rinse again. Apply gobs of conditioner. Let sit for two hours, leave shower. After drying somewhat, rinse but still leave some in. Let dry, brush out. This make the hair very smooth and easy to comb.

Hair salon every 4 months. Use a course plastic comb to remove tangles every morning. Life is essentially unchanged last two years. Goal continues to be shoulder length.

I hate being forced to watch advertisements on YouTube before my videos starts, and now I saw a commercial for Dove shampoo when I was going to watch an episode of a video podcast about video games. I’m not hear to rant about YouTube ads, though.

The ad asked “What’s the difference between a man’s hair and a woman’s hair?” I thought there wasn’t anything to compare or contrast! Then again, I can’t address enough the lack of men with hair below waist length, so maybe there’s a point being made.

But, here comes the worst part: The man answering the question in the ad mentions Tangled (but the source material, not the movie itself) to back up his claim that women have stronger hair! But, that’s not all. My least favorite movie of all time is erroneously referred to as a nursery rhyme. Seriously?!

Now, let me calm down and make my point: Do you all really think men can’t have the same hair as women? That could be a rhetorical question, but length isn’t the only thing that makes locks luscious for some reason.

Possibly, next summer I will shave again to, finally, rise irresistibly handlebar mustachioed from the deep black mire and capture this on photos and videos... let's hope that I lose some weight in between!

Breakage at the bangs? [PIC]

I have recently noticed some breakage in my hair, particularly in the bangs area. Until recently, I was able to ponytail all of my hair, but in the last couple of months, I found that my hair at the bangs area is about 2-3" and I find myself having to bobbypin it.

There has also been breakage elsewhere. I recently have had a malnutrition issue from gastroparesis, and until recently, I had not been able to eat. My stylist told me it is likely due to malnutrition and I should take more vitamins and steer clear of sulfite hair products.

Does anyone have any additional advice? My hair has begun to look a little ratty and I need to find a way to make it appear healthy again. Thanks!

It’s a shame most of the contests and competitions for people with long hair that happen around the world only allow women to compete. However, I stumbled upon a video from an event in New Mexico focused on Native Americans that held a “Long Hair Contest” earlier this year. I think it’s been 5 years since the Gathering of Nations (as the event is called) held such a competition.

The best part is: men could participate in the competition! There was 1 male winner and 1 female winner in 2014, but this year had 2 winners for each gender: one was in the range of 7 years to 12 years old, and the other was 13 years or older.

I would include a link to this year’s competition, but the video footage cuts off after one of the male winners claims his reward, and all we hear is audio. It’s disappointing!

Hey guys,
For those of you that don't know me, I'm a pretty young guy, having been born in 2001 so I'm only 18. A lot of you are much older so I wanted to ask some advice from you- how has long hair affected your dating life? I personally have wanted long hair since a very young age and I'm very attached to it, so I would never cut it. That being said, I am starting to worry that my hair is affecting my dating life as I'm never really able to see anyone at this point. I will attach a picture of me/my hair in case that would help, but I guess it does make me look very feminine(I'm ok with that, but I wish it wouldn't affect my dating life). Any advice for how I can deal with that? I understand that where I live would also affect my luck dating, as different regions have different preferences(I live in College Station, Texas).
Thanks :)

Hey all!
Hope you've been doing well. I haven't posted in a while- I've moved to College Station, Texas, I'm pursuing a bachelor's degree in robotics engineering here at Texas A&M. I'm honestly seeing a lot more longhairs here than back home(I'm from San Francisco) which is pretty cool. In any case, I'm dealing with an issue over my hair with my parents. They've made it known time and time again that they are very uncomfortable with me having long hair. I'm South Asian, and it's extremely uncommon for our men to have long hair(unless you're Sikh). All the men in my family have close-cropped hairstyles that are "professional" and "clean-looking", as my parents like to say. They've been pressuring me very much to get a haircut, and I hate it. I get that having long hair is unconventional, but I hate being constantly told to get a haircut when I simply don't want to. How do I deal with this? They've been great parents otherwise, so I don't want to make them sad/angry. I just want to end this peacefully, because it's annoying.
Thanks for the help guys! :)

I thought I'd post a selfie of what I've been doing most days during the awkward phase. I'm over 8 months into my third longhair journey that started back in January with 2 inches. It looks fuller than it had gotten and is nice and healthy. But the length just isn't there yet as it keeps curling up rather than going down. It will eventually go down and then I won't have to cover it with a bandana and I can actually just wear those beads in my hair the way it's meant to be done!

Even though I don't post as much as I used to, I still lurk here and there and glad to see many here still posting as I have missed you all! I cut my hair back to shoulder length last year because of dye damage but I have since stopped dying my hair (was dying it black but natural color is dark brown). My hair is doing much better and healthy now. I plan on going back to mid back like in the photo but as of now it is shoulder blade length so not a real long way off. Hope you all are doing great. :)

A while ago I got a brown leather braided Bohemian headdress for guys that has beads on it. It came with feathers also but I took them off. The leather has started to break now and I was looking at others. I like how it can quickly be put on as a bead tightens and loosens the band. I attached a picture of one that I was looking at but I would take off the feathers (that's just me).

Growing your hair out as a "f*** you" to a person, institution or society. Or to be a rebel of some sort is not a good reason to grow your hair out to me. In my opinion it promotes the stereotype of longhairs as being anti social. Then again it could just be a flimsy excuse for doing something you wanted to do all along. While maintaining one's machismo. And yes I ran into a longhair guy who said that's why he grew his hair out. I won't say where this was or the exact reason he gave for privacy reasons. This was what inspired me to write this post.

Good evening, it has been quite some time since I posted, but here is the most recent pic - my hair is a little wild due to malnutrition from gastroparesis. Not bad for a 54-year-old? I'm actually at 6'1" and 162 # in that photo.

Ofcourse keenly looking into the nutrition, hydration and the health part too - which seems to have an equal if not greater impact on hair growth. Wish me luck folks. I will post a mid year update on where I'm..

My hair is definitely in the awkward stage and all over the place so now I've started wearing a cotton head wrap during the day to control it. Since cotton breathes and I work inside where I'm not sweating, is there anything wrong with this from a practical stance? I don't know how true it is, but when I was a kid people were saying that if u wear a hat all the time u will go bald because your scalp needs to breathe.

Hi everyone :)

I hit the 8 year mark a few weeks ago and I made a video and took pictures.

I only trimmed it once in the past 8 months, to see if it can grow faster. The gain in length seems quite small in the pictures, but I can tell the difference (compared to last October). I think it is really long and I like it. I want to trim it to thicken out the ends a bit more.

Thanks for your posts and your support!

Keep it growing,

I've had long hair a couple of times, but ended up cutting it short for various (regrettable) reasons.

Currently, I have not had a haircut for almost six years .... but I have a an odd problem. After the first year and a half, my hair reached 15 inches, but has not grown since. Isn't that a bit short for terminal length. It has grown much longer than that in the past.

Also, weirdly enough, a couple of people asked me if I cut my hair recently - which means it looks shorter for some reason. I have not cut my hair for years, but have to admit, it doesn't "look" as long as it did a year or so ago. Is my hair sucking back into my head?

Wondering, and wishing it would grow longer ....

Guys, forgive me for not being more active lately. I've been in England since early June, sailing with my daughter who just finished her master's and wanted to take some time off beffore continuing her studies. As you can see, my hair is still long and continues to grow if ever so slowly. Also, I decided a few months ago to stop coloring and let the gray take over; you can see the results of that on top. As Anthony has said, long hair and rigging just seem to go together, so no plans to take off any length in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, I hope everybody's having a great summer!

Don

Today I started to feel like myself again for the first time in over a year when I looked in the mirror this morning with my hair up. Not all of it, but enough of it that it stayed. I had to twist and braid my very front most hair to do it, but it was worth it. I left the back part down and it is a bit curly, so I had a unique styling today. It was fun. Nobody passed comment, which was nice. Just wanted to share a positive hair journey story.

I can’t address enough that men with very long hair are hard to find these days, but I have a little story I want to tell.

Earlier today, I were at the drive-thru of a well-known restaurant waiting to get our food when I saw two (2) men with long hair walking out of the restaurant. One had a black ponytail that went down to the upper half of his back, and the other also had a ponytail, but it was brown and waist length.

I wondered if they were a gay couple, and I wanted to go talk to them. Unfortunately, I was in a car and my overprotective mother was with me. This meant I couldn’t get the chance to even compliment them!

Oh well. It was a sight to see regardless. Has anyone else encountered men with such long locks?

I hope I’m wrong, but I realized the Guinness World Record for “Longest Head Hair (Male)” has NEVER been officially broken! I find that disappointing. If records for FACIAL hair can be broken by men, then why haven’t I seen any men attempt to break the SCALP hair world record?

I've been using all natural ingredients from the kitchen for the last 5 months and when I get hair trims from my sister in law to get all the damaged split ends off my head she's only cutting about 1/8 inch every 3 months (she says go 4 months next time). I'm not recommending hair cuts but just saying that you don't need to buy stuff with chemicals in it to keep you're hair healthy-stuff you can eat can also safely go on your head.

So, I found a recipe for an easy deep conditioner that contains mainly coconut milk and aloe vera gel. I made this and checked the pH which is around 5 (that's what is wanted-the pH of just the coconut milk is 7 which is too high but the aloe vera brings it down). It then calls for olive oil but I reduced the amount and added some other oils as well. Here's the amounts:

1/2 cup coconut milk
5 tablespoons aloe vera gel
2 teaspoons of olive oil
2 teaspoons of coconut oil
2 teaspoons of avacado oil

Wisk everything so the oils mix well with the milk and aloe. Funnel into a squeeze bottle with a thin nozzle. My hair is only around 4" so I only needed half (I froze the rest for later). Put the bottle over your head over a sink and slowly apply. This is pretty fluid so be careful not to make a big mess. Once hair is soaked I used a shower brush to spread it and then put a durag on my head so it doesn't drip all over the place. Let it soak into your hair for at least a half hour and wash out.

Hello gents.
I've been lurking a while and wanted to make a short introduction.
I'm someone who's always had short back n sides, obsessed about looking 'sharp' before and after a number of years in the (British) military.
Almost six months ago I decided to just stop. Starting at a very short SB&S (around 1/2 an inch difference between top and sides), it is now approaching my shirt collar.
I know it's only around 3.5 inches but it looks very long
I haven't added a photograph as it doesn't feel long enough to share yet, I want to leave it at least a year.
I am enjoying growing my hair more and more, at the moment I feel like I never want to cut it again.
To cut it again would feel like a return to my former self, who always did what was expected.
I'm not entirely sure if this is silly, or not.
And I also don't know how much of this is coincidental with my own 'spiritual development', but I feel different. I feel like I accept myself totally, like I don't give a cr4p what anyone else thinks, and because of this I feel more confident, dare I say, more sensual. Basically, more able to be my full, true self.
From all I have read about men growing their hair out, I can't help but feel it is strongly related.
I reached the point where I don't want to ever cut my hair again. Why? Because why would I? Why would I alter my natural appearance, and not be in the way God, Nature, or whomever intended?
Also having long hair is a reminder that I never again want to enter the corporate world. I did six years and have had my fill. I'd rather be a humble carpenter (not saying I am anything like Jesus).
I notice so many men trapped in "must be acceptable" mode and laugh (at myself), because I used to be like that. For most of my life, actually.
And it feels damn good not to be like that any more.
Cheers to my longer-haired brothers

My son decided to grow his hair out when he was 7. He is now 12 and has been growing his hair for the past 5 years. It takes a lot of character to have long hair when it goes against the grain and I am glad he has developed that along with having a great head of hair. Kudos to all of you.

I've been using this DIY flaxseed hair gel with argan and peppermint oils added (seeds get taken out after boiling and producing the gel). I came across a link that describes how to make this gel but simmering for 40 minutes. I made it and it's not as thick as a typical hair gel and reminds me of stuff I bought in the 80's that was watery but gave a hold and wet look.

Anybody know what it was? I was a kid then and didn't pay attention to things like brands, labels or ingredients. Not too much to go on except what I said-it left a wet look and gave some hold. A bit thicker than water and was sold in a plastic squeeze bottle.

Here's how to make the stuff and what I did. I used coconut water instead of distilled water.

2 cups of coconut water
1 cup filtered water
3/8 cup golden flaxseeds
21 drops argan oil
21 drops peppermint oil

In a pot bring the coconut water and filtered water to boiling. Add flaxseeds and simmer 40 minutes. Sieve through fine metal mesh and then put resulting liquid into 3 glass containers. Add 7 drops argan oil to each glass container while hot and stir. When cool add 7 drops of peppermint oil to each container and stir again. Put the top on and place 2 containers in the freezer. Keep the other capped container in the refrigerator.

It's only supposed to last 2 weeks without any preservative but the peppermint oil seems to keep it from going bad because 1 container lasts me about 3 weeks (my hair is only 3-4 inches long) and has never gone bad. That's why I freeze 2/3 of it. This produces enough for 2 months.

I apply it from root to ends of the hair with my hands and then brush it through with a detangling wet brush. Don't touch your hair much till air dry. It will still looks wet but feels stiff so try to get it to soften gently with your fingers. I found it adds volume but doesn't flake.

If you want more of a hold then supposedly brown flaxseeds do this. Less liquid too. The other recipe I followed said do this 10 minutes and that produced a thicker liquid.

I have wavy/curly hair and all my life I've avoided the curls and tried to straighten my hair so it was straight but in doing so I was drying it out and damaging it. Now at 46 I've finally decided to keep my hair moisturized with argan and coconut oil and just let the curls do their thing. My hair pulled straight is probably only 4" and it looks a lot shorter not straight but the curls make it look full. Maybe it'll straighten out as it gets heavier with length but I'll continue to keep it moisturized so it doesn't get damaged again.

I make my own hair rinses and shampoo out of edible ingredients like green tea or apple cider vinegar with a little baking soda mixed in with water. Then I add 7 drops of argan oil or 3 drops of coconut oil to the mix. I'm also using homemade flaxseed juice which also has argan oil in it.

Hello fellow long hair peeps XD

How are all of you today?

I am interested in beginning to grow out my luscious locks. Currently I am at 0% hair (Bald LOL)

Do you have any tips and tricks? Figured it would be fun to try and grow it out as long as I can. (Like Jason Momoa)

Thank you,

Last Saturday my oldest Daughter got re-married, the first was 11 years ago in the photo in my comment. My hair has grown a little, lol

I'm posting an update on my hair progress.

The other day I made the mistake of not tying the hair up.
Long story short a good chunk of hair got damaged so I had
to hack off about ten inches of hair to even it out.

I'm not happy about it, it's been alot of years since i've had
hair that was this short. I hate it. The good news is hair does grow back. I started growing my hair long in 1964, it was in the 1960s that my hair was this short.

The lesson from all this is I should have taken the extra few
seconds to tie the hair up.

I've been wearing it more often in a pony tail, bun or braid but
0n this day I neglected to do it and paid the price for it.

(I've attached a photo.}

My hair curls but not real thick and I've always been able to straighten it with a hair dryer or gel but I think this was damaging it so this time growing my hair out I'm going with the curls. I'm only a couple months into this at a couple inches but my hair is curling all over the place now. I don't like it but nobody has said it looks messy. In fact I got a compliment already that seemed genuine!

I came across an instructable for making flaxseed gel from this girl with way longer and curlier hair than I have and she used a kind of flexible rubber bristle hair brush and I posted a picture of it. She said the wide flexible bristles helped the curls to clump and not get brushed out. Does anybody know what this kind of brush is called?

Hi All

Long time lurker here (as in 10+ yrs) . Just over 2 years growth at the moment . Kind of a cross between wavy/curly hair so it could be a bit longer but I'm enjoying the bulk . Making the most of my hair genetics (father still has a full head of black hair at 75 and most of my peers/colleagues are already bald at my age (46) and even younger) .
Going to see if I can hold out til 50 without getting even a trim , which would make my hair 6 years old from a total razor shave . Hope to update at least every 6 months and me more of a regular contributor to the board. Greetings from the U.K and keep it growin' & flowin'

Hello again mlhh. Going for my 3rd and final long haired journey. Wish me luck ! It has been 11 years since I cut my hair to support my family after losing employment. Not looking forward to the awkward phase but I am determined. Not as many long haired dudes here as when I posted 11 years ago. I will try to encourage others as others have encouraged me. Just to let younger dudes know. Even at 49 I still get rassed and harassed about starting to grow it long again. But at this point in my life. I really don’t care. I usually tell the wise crackers “you don’t have the balls or guts to grow your hair long”
Hope to hear from others here on the board ?!

Well, I'm in this longhair journey for the third time of my life and am only 2 months in but my hair had gotten so damaged back in January that I cut it short 2 months ago so no more hair was breaking off in my hands but with the intention of growing it out again but healthy this time. My sister in law is a hairdresser and was surprised I did this after having long hair for 18 years...but I actually had been thinking about it for a year. So she said she would help me keep it healthy and recommended hair trims of a 1/4" every 6-8 weeks. I graciously accepted her help but at the same time wondered if that time period could be lengthened with good hair care practices and that's what I did for 2 months-no hair dryers and oil to keep my hair moisturized (argan oil is real good-but not much).

This weekend was 9 weeks and she did the 1/4" trim but told me there wasn't much of a slit end to cut and I could have waited another month. So now I'm good for at least 3 months I figure so it'll be done again in July.

I think the 6-8 week regular trim that hair stylist are taught doesn't pertain to what's really needed for every customer. I'm not even convinced that 3 months is when a trim is needed for me to keep the hair healthy but I'll see.

Hey guys,
Haven't posted in a while- school got busy again. I hope everyone is doing well :)
I'm having an issue as of late with my hair, and I was hoping you all could help. I began growing my hair out last year(my last haircut was March of 2018), as growing my hair long has been a lifelong dream of mine since I was a young kid. It's been 11 months so far, and sadly I'm still stuck in the awkward phase. I constantly get comments from people about how dirty and messy I look, and how I should get it cut. It really hurts my feelings because long hair is something I really want, but I don't have a thick skin and people hurt me easily with their mean comments. I just want to be through the awkward phase to the point where my hair looks genuinely good, and nobody can insult it because it doesn't look dirty or messy anymore. How long will it be until I'm done with the awkward phase?
If you need pics of my hair I can provide them.
Thanks a lot as usual :)

Hi, everyone. I have very fine, chest length hair. It gets tangled so easily, especially when swimming. I've tried braids, a single braid, ponytail, and bun, but nothing seems to keep my hair secure and tangle free in the water. The single braid seems to work best, but if I use a soft elastic it comes undone and if I secure it with a strong elastic, the elastic rips out my hair.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Any suggestions? I'll be in Mexico in a month and plan to spend most of the time in the ocean--I'm a water baby, what can I say?
Any help would be appreciated. At this point, I'm thinking I may need to cut a few inches off. It's just such a pain in the ass to swim and I LOVE swimming.

Hey guys.. Avi here again. I'm having a bit of a psychological issue with my hair I guess.
My goal is to grow my hair to my hip, but I've always had very restrictive parents and so I was never able to pursue that dream although I've wanted to do it all my life. In March 2018 I finally was able to convince them and I began growing my hair out. Its around my shoulders now, its still pretty short as its only been a year.

My issue comes from whenever I see people with waist length hair. I run into people with waist length hair either online or in real life, and I always feel really low when I see them. Its been my dream to have hair like theirs since I was a kid, yet I was never able to pursue it, and I wasted so much time not growing it out. If I had started growing it out when I wanted to, I definitely would be at my hip now. it just makes me feel so bad, and I feel so low esteem about my hair since its so short and only at my shoulder, and they all have such long hair. I know it seems super petty and trivial, but i really do feel significantly bad and low inside whenever I see very long haired people. :( Nothing against them obviously, they just make me feel like a failure I guess. its gonna be years before I reach that goal...how do I cope till then?
Thanks everyone,
Avi:)

My long hair has followed my life's ups and downs, and went through cycles of bad and good hair days with me. Along the way, it was trimmed and I underwent hair loss - losing significant thickness, due to poor maintenance and neglect.

Having been with me for a better part of my life, this is where my hair is at now. I plan to grow it even longer after it becomes thicker.

Keep growing too, guys!

Natural Hair Rinses [PIC]

Last post:

Well for over a month now I've been using things out of the kitchen cupboard for all my hair care. Get this, u can use a lot of the stuff u drink to wash your hair and it won't strip your hair of the natural oils that your hair needs like store bought shampoo. I took a picture of most of the things I use. Herbal teas can be used all the time as a rinse and supposedly speed up hair growth-chamomile tea is said to do that. Nettle is another herbal tea with no caffeine. I make the teas ahead of time and keep them in the fridge. Green tea can be used once or twice a week as it has caffeine (great for the scalp) but using it too frequently may dry out your hair. Concentrate the teas by 2X (1 cup is 2 tea bags).

I use that plastic condiments squeeze bottle in the center to squeeze the stuff on my wet hair and focus on my scalp. After it's done (I drench my head) I massage it into my scalp for a couple minutes. There are different methods of massaging the scalp. I'm follicly challenged so my hair is thin and the baby hairs break easily so I don't want to end up with hair on my hands after a massage so I press on different areas of my scalp with the spongy tips of my fingers to make the scalp skin move a bit and don't let my hands slide over my hair doing this. Then I let go of the scalp and move my fingers to another area of the scalp and do it again. The purpose of this it to get the blood flowing on the scalp (under the skin) so that your hair roots absorb the tea u just administered and it needs blood to do that. I saw a therapist on a youtube video do this and she says u want to get your scalp as loose as the skin near your eye but if u just wanna rub it in circles the way a regular massage is done, that'll work too but u just don't wanna pull out weak hair.

I like to put peppermint oil in everything. I like the smell and it's supposed to speed up hair growth. It is concentrated so just 4-6 drops in a tea rinse should be good. It will be tingly and burns in the eyes...close your eyes. Rinse off the rinses with cool water. I put those tea rinses on my head when I first get in the shower and then let it sit there while I wash. Then rinse with water after a couple minutes. When u rinse the rinse, your head shouldn't feel too oily but it won't get squeaky clean either.

So what's missing? The conditioner! When I get out of the shower I moisturize with a hair oil mixed with water. Argan is one that I use and I have a bottle with half water and half oil that I pour into my hands. Not much-just a dime size for me with 4" hair.

Once or twice a week I use that apple cider vinegar for washing my hair. This is the recipe I use:

2 tablespoon ACV
1/4-1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1 cup warm water
4 drops peppermint oil

Close your eyes while doing this-the vinegar and peppermint will sting. I again use that squeeze bottle. Mix everything a glass jar or cup (the vinegar and baking soda will react for a bit) and then funnel into the squeeze bottle.

I pour it on my wet scalp and hair, massage and let it sit for a while just like the tea rinses. The peppermint oil should cover up the vinegar smell but if not then don't worry because the vinegar smell will disappear as your hair dries. Some sites say this is a conditioner but not like most people are used to and like the tea rinses leaves some natural oils in the hair.

I didn't include this in the picture but coconut milk makes a great hair moisturizer. I saw u can make a deep conditioner with it. Use the canned stuff and drain the watery stuff off. Blend it with some coconut oil. It should be kinda thick and put it all down the length of your hair and then let it sit there for a couple hours. Wrap your head with a bandana to keep from making a mess. Then rinse off what's left with cool water.

Hope this helps somebody! I left a link of more natural hair shampoos u can make yourself.

The image on the left shows my hair as of today. Last July I had my hair cut to its shortest length that it had been for many years. It was just long enough to get it all back into a ponytail tie. It was a fun change but I haven't had it cut since and am considering returning to the length shown in the picture on the right. That looks to be at least a year's worth of growth to get back there. I have had it much longer than that before but it's harder to keep the ends healthy.

I wish my hair was of coarse texture but it's fine and therefore prone to damage. There are only so many ways to wear it. I think if I kept it at the length shown to the right, I could keep the ends healthy.

I've had pretty long hair now for about five years. But for the most part, I tied it back in a ponytail. I decided for 2 months straight I'm not allowed to use any hair ties. first thing I noticed is that it began to change my physiology, and my life in subtle ways.

For starters, I begin to have these kind of symptoms.

* Random anger
* forgetfullness
* lack of motivation
* mental fog... etc..

I just pushed through and continue. It's been about two months, today I tied my hair back for the first time. All of those symptoms immediately went away. Only slightly lingering. I've always known that there is some kind of spiritual connection to hair and our aura, and how we function in society.
This is had me questioning the role of having hair down for men in the first place. I've been thinking, are we even supposed to have hair down, or is it supposed to be tied back for mental clarity. If anyone concurs with this experience let me know.

Cant think clearly with head down.

Just curious if anyone else experience is this. I've had my hair long now for 5 or 6 years. Most of the time I tie it back. I decided it was time to just let it down and be me. It's been about two months, have not used any hair ties whatsoever. One thing I notice is that a lot of times, that's just hard for me to think straight now that my hair is down.

Almost like some kind of vibrational change or something. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else experience is this. Thanks for reading.

Hello! My name is Erik, and I wanted to ask for help, regarding a presentation I need to do.

In about a month, I have to give an informative presentation on whatever topic I chose (I'm a sophomore in college, by the way. I know that piece of info isn't necessary at all, but I thought I'd just mention it). Being a long-haired man (my hair is right on the cusp of shoulder length, and I plan on growing it down to my navel), I thought it would be interesting to see where contempt towards long hair on men began in the United States, and even around the world. I have a basic outline, and have begun to do research, but I have to find credible sources, and unfortunately, a lot of the sources I've found that talk about men with long hair (especially in the modern day) are places like BuzzFeed or The New Yorker. I guess my question is, do you guys know where I can find credible sources? I've found pretty good sources about long hair in ancient times (i.e. Ireland and the Merovingian Dynasty)but I'm having a hard time finding sources about when long hair was first banned in the US and the World, specifically regarding WWI.

Sorry for the incredibly long post, but thanks for reading it! If nobody can find any good sources that's okay, I can just tweak the speech. Thanks for listening, and I might keep you guys updated on the development of this speech.

And before you ask, I did read the article from 1964 from Phil O. Trichos, but I have use "unbiased" and historical sources, and use texts like these as supplements.

I read about making your own coconut milk shampoo on plenty of different websites and YouTube videos-it's good for the scalp and hair. Some other sites have taken it a step further and blended it with pure aloe vera which supposedly helps prevent split ends. Add a little jojoba oil and I think that would pack a double split end prevention whammy. I attached one of the links I found. This should help keep frizzy hairs at bay!

I'm trying to go all natural for a while to see if chemicals in hair products are contributing to my thin hair. That site that Jin posted seems to think it does and I'm following the guides there to make ACV & Baking Soda hair cleaner and conditioner along with some other hair rinses from tea and the scalp peel from the bark of a Willow Tree.

So I started going around the web to see what else I could use that is all natural besides eggs (I don't want my shower drain smelling like rotten eggs). I found a couple things-coconut milk for deep conditioning (leave in 30 minutes under a winter hat), apple juice for another shampoo and of all things hair gel made from flax seeds!

I have a couple bags of flax seeds at home so I can easily try this out. I'm not sure how much of a hold it has compared with a store bought hair gel with chemicals that isn't edible, but I don't need a whole lot of hold right yet so I'm game!

Aloe Vera in the hair

I started putting aloe vera gel on my scalp the other day. It's a natural gel recommended on that hairlossrevolution site that Jin posted. Other sites say that pure aloe vera gel exfoliates the scalp and opens up pores clogged with sebum. I found out today that it's a great hair gel also when your hair is wet. It dries a bit hard and then just brush it with a soft boars hair brush and it doesn't let your hair get all frizzy while giving some hold. I'm not sure if you're supposed to wear it all day or if the aloe can actually clog pores if not washed out within an hour of application.

It also relieves at itchy scalp. I linked the pure aloe vera gel I use. It says it's 100% pure and 99% organic.

Well a couple weeks ago I cut my long damaged hair down to about 2-3" with a #8 comb on a hair buzzer with the intention to grow it out longer and healthier than it was. That is still the plan and now I'll be going through the awkward phase for the third time in my life. I have a couple problematic thin areas on my scalp that I'm trying to cleanse now, but what I've found to be a useful product for volume is the texture paste linked-it gives volume to the hair around thin areas. I've been using this for a couple weeks and like it. You just need a little and I put it in while my hair is dry, finger comb it in and then I get my fingers wet and smooth the surrounding areas into it. It seems to just wash out with warm water as it is water based.

Hi! I used to post fairly regularly in the early days of this board, and then gradually left off. Have been visiting on and off.

A few months ago I had a head injury due to an accident. The hospital had bundled my waist-length hair up and bandaged it, and when the bandage was removed the hair was so badly tangled and clumped up with blood and sweat that I was forced to cut it back to shoulder-length. One thing I have noticed is that the ends tend to curl up rather a lot. My question, is there any chance of it growing back to it's earlier length? Is there anything I can do it help it do so?

Preventing split ends from happening seems like the way to go by avoiding heat styling tools, conditioning daily and keeping the ends oiled. How bout one other thing-beeswax? I was told this can clog your scalp pores, but how bout just putting it on your hair ends? Guys have been using beeswax in the beard a long time and whether they know it or not it seals split ends so they don't continue to split. So if it works on face hair then why not scalp hair?

I saw a bunch of sites talking about using Apple Cider Vinegar on the scalp to help unclog pores and then hair growth would not be hindered. The mildest solution produces an 8% mix of Apple Cider Vinegar in water. It should not burn and they say do it once a week and on clean hair. I did this last night with no problems, but I guess only time will let me know if pores got unclogged and I see new hair. I did see other sites that used stronger dilutions up to 50% and one use the Apple Cider Vinegar straight.

The 8% solution that I made with regular water is linked to this post. Anybody try a natural scalp cleanse? I guess this is what a clarifying shampoo does?

Hi all - Maybe some of the older posters here can chime in on this, but I was wondering how rare it was for men to have long hair between WWI and the 1950's.

Everyone's pretty familiar with men growing out their hair starting in the 60's, but in old photographs, movies and TVs shows, I don't think I've ever seen a single guy with long hair during this time period.

Did anyone do it? Was it considered too "socially unacceptable" during this time?

Damaged hair now gone

Well after around 20 years, my long damaged hair is gone (by my own hand) and it's all 2 inches around my head now. I'm not happy about it but I couldn't get my hair past my shoulders and hopefully if I can keep my hair healthy it will since I now know what split ends look like (mine weren't at the ends but had traveled at least 6 inches of my 12 inch length.

My intention is to grow it out again as I've already been through the awkward phase twice and know better how to deal with things without damaging my hair again. This time next year it should be near my shoulders when wet but my hair is wavy and curls a lot when long so it won't look that long till later in 2020.

So, here's my question. I looked at a lot of youtube videos about how to identify split ends and cut them. However, the best strategy is to keep your hair healthy so that spit ends are minimized-no heat tools, keep your hair conditioned and oiled. The videos I watched the people had smooth hair which I didn't have. Now I was thinking that my hair is just different but maybe healthy hair should be smooth.

Is smooth hair an indication of a healthy head of hair?

I measured my hair growth rate years ago and recently on the sides of my head to be 1/2" a month. My brother (who has never had long hair so I'm not sure that his measurements were for more than a 4 month period) says his hair growth rate is 1" a month. I did also measure my beard growth rate over 6 months to be 2/3"-3/4" but I'm not sure how that relates to my scalp.

I've also read from Bill's longhair pages and searched around and saw that 1/2" a month is typical. Has anybody ever heard of 1" a month other than this post?

This latest one is called the "Great Cut". Their goal is 200 lbs. of hair. I don't think there's enough kids with cancer in the country that could use that much hair. Remember "locks of love"? My suspicion is just like locks of love most of the donated hair will wind up in the trash or wigs will be sold for profit. My opinion is that all these so-called charities are just a backdoor way to get you to cut your hair. And that Robin Williams movie "Death to Smoochie" hit the nail on the head about charity organizations.
I remember several years ago I had to give to the United Way to keep my job. The way that worked is the company( a lot of companies were doing that back then) sent around a donation form and you had to fill it out whether or not you were donating. If the purpose was to intimidate me into donating, Job well done! Seriously with all the charities wanting our hair is a wonder there's any guys with long hair left.

Best wishes for 2019 to you all.

Still growing and some significant chaos since november update, its starting to go downwards now, so all fun from here on in :)

Shot is a bit blurry or arty as I like to say, taken today on the move in the photographic studio, but it gives a feel of where I am anyway.

Cheers everyone

Dave

Thought I'd share this photo of a guy with gorgeous banded long blond hair to his knees. Very impressive.

Hey guys :)
So I've been growing for about 8 months now, and as such my hair is the longest its been in my life. I'm still 17, and I live with my parents. My mom has been very supportive, telling me that I get to choose what to do with my hair. My dad on the other hand hates it. He constantly tells me to cut my hair and says it looks ugly. I'm not sure how to deal with him. It's not like he can force me to cut it, but at the same time it's kind of annoying and hurtful to hear these things coming from him :( I'm going to college in a year anyways, but till then how can I handle this situation?
Thanks,
Avi :)

Hi there, I used to post a lot between 2003-2012 on my older hair journeys, this place is now really quiet sadly. Although I do lurk from time to time.

Here is my hair at I think just over 3 yrs growth today, I think I started from all one length at chin length in 2015? I haven't been posting like crazy like I used to and I don't even have any pics from 2015.

It seems to have grown really fast in the past year especially.

No plans to cut I like the way it is, it's the longest it's ever been now. My hair seems to be just a part of me. At 44 I don't really worry what others think any more, I couldn't give a %$##!!

Finding weird stuff happening at this length, like it's getting stuck in the car door, under my arms, I go to look down at my desk and my ponytail stops my head moving forward lol. I often wear it in a bun now because of this, especially to bed-the tangles are a nightmare.

Anyway hope all are doing well and will try to post more often!

Cheers,

Matt.

Hi(gh)!

And I thought long-haired mustached men (aka swamp gypsies) were completely off the scene... but look at this one: https://www.youtube.com/user/Kragatar/videos

His hair seems to be almost waist-long... wow! And he's playing around with synthesizers, which is very recommending to me...

I plan to add a sub-section dedicated entirely to the long-haired mustached male to my homepage - they absolutely deserve it!

See you in Khyberspace!
