I recently cut 10 years worth of hair (R.I.P) and am starting over, mainly because my hair was dried, split ended, frizzed and just plain awful. I want to do everything possible to prevent this in the future when it grows back. I took very little care of it, mostly out of ignorance and i wish to change that this time around. So i'm wondering in terms of washing, drying, and general treatment what the board recommends...don't be afraid to go into detail. thanks!
Forced haircut Saturday. Mom wants the bangs above my eyebrows so they don't part. And she's suggesting layers.
What do I do? She's beyond reason so what do I say at the salon to minimize the damage?
Well I tried breaking into the community quite a while ago, but slipped into inactivity right afterwards. Anyways onto my question.
Lately i've had people asking me how long my hair actually is, as opposed to the "wow your hairs long" generic comment. But the thing is I don't know where I actually take the measurement. Is it at the base of the skull, at the top, or somewhere in between? Any help would be really appreciated. I'll be sure to post a picture soon, when the batteries for my camera are finshed recharging.
A while ago I had a lecture that raised certain questions. The lecturer said that it is illegal for schools and other facilities to manipulate personal appearance (apart from the dress code in certain schools that limit your wardrobe to the same trousers and shirts for your entire stay). I tried to find written laws/ human rights but I didnÂ’t find any. When I later asked a teacher that used to teach me in my previous school, he said that hair ties in with the dress code and one must abide by that as the school is a separate institution that can hold its own rules.
Can anyone make this clearer, please?
Hey, I got some questions about hair care.
I've had some problem with breakage so I've started using hot oil treatments. I also use Infusium 23, boars bristle brush and a big tooth comb, I threw out that crappy brush I used to use. I have some itching and flakes so I use Head and Shoulders, it helps some but not enough. I started using biotin about a week ago.
Since I started this routine I swear my hair has grown an inch in the past month.
It has been looking better, much of the time it looks like the avatar but sometimes it gets pretty fuzzy. I'm sure the water is crappy but I can't really do anything about that.
I was wondering what's the best hot oil to use or if there's something better to beat the fuzzies?
Cheers,
Paul

Alright, so I've been interested in the bobby pins to help me cope with the awkward/crazy stage of hair before it gets long enough to hold itself down. I posted a couple of pictures to show what I've done on my first attempt. (There is only one... but it helps a great deal and doesn't look to shabby)!! Anyways, I've been growing it out since August of 08' (last summer). It grows fast... or so my mother says. But here are a 6 months update. :D
P.S.--I just turned 21!!! SO yes, there has been a good milestone I've reached I guess. Keep growing the hair guys. Your pictures are perfect inspirations. :D
MilestoneMute
Since I am new on this board and 2009 is a year with no haircut and for me. The year where I have to become a really longhair. I have never been a longhair (my record is 5 months without haircut), so this year must be happy growing year. I wish everybody here a happy New Year, a lot of success with your long hair and hair growth process, nice ponytails and wonderful shoulder lenghts and midback lengths. Thanks in advance to all of you for the support in my long hair efforts!

My wife was always telling me about the fact that one of the most important milestones for a man with very long hair is to be mistaken for a women especially from the back. It so happened that we had a common family get together on the evening of December 21. My wife always had a preference for frequent trimming for her , eventhough she did not insist on the same for my hair. On the morning of 21st Dec, she had her hair trimmed by a few inches to coincide with the U cut and she also requested me that i let my hair down for the party. She suggested that instead of the Pony tail which i sport normally, she helped me into the three strand braid and it was really wonderful experience for me also as my hair got a lot of attention and appreciation. Some of the relatives told my wife that in fact they mistook me for a women especially from the back. My wife much to my surprise was very happy and said that this is important milestone for a man who wants to grow his hair long. Myself and mywife enjoyed the attention on my hair. My sons class teacher also complemented me for the length and maintenance of my hair.

..this is the only kind I use!
Hey all!!
I was thinking since I'm looking for a new job here in the So Cal area, maybe some of you can jump in with some long hair friendly companies! I'm going to try for trader joes but having some back up ones would be nice!!

I would love to see some updates of your hair.
Are you still using jojoba oil?
Regards
Yay, I'm actually updating. I know my updates are few and far between, but that's just due to the curl. :) Here's my one year update since I joined MLHH.
This is my hair, one year ago nearly to the day, and is my avatar here, obviously.
This was JUST after I had dyed it black after a long affair with bleach, in whichI've had almost every unnatural and natural color (or variation therein)known to human kind, including white (highlights were awesome).
After that, I hennaed for the first time and took up CO, around...January/February of 2008.
Which did a lot. Soon after this, I changed my hair-type to 3b/3c/F/M/ii, because it was far more accurate, I think. I'm still not fully sure what texture my hair is, but I couldn't care less as long as it feels fine, and as to the thickness, my last haircut included layers. A LOT of layers.
Anyway...
I hennaed again, and again, and again...
And my hair got longer (though not much noticeably, due to the curl)...
(Friend's birthday party in March. I wasn't quite...apt to the idea of having my photo taken.)
And now, since I'm out of photos (or just too lazy to look them up) my one year-progess photos.

My hair is STILL short, sadly, and is hovering right between chin and shoulder, sometimes reaching the latter. When it's pulled straight, it is ALLLLLMOST APL, as well.
I can't do much with it other than a ponytail or small segmented tail, but I'm pleased otherwise. The latter of those produces some pretty cool results too (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/PaulCarroll/Me/DSCF1372.jpg
minues the front, obviously). I'm FINALLY getting comments on how long it's getting, though all positive, at leas the ones said aloud to me. Tomorrow I'm letting my sister even up the back a little and cut off some dye damage. As much as my sister and I...dislike each other at times, she's good with hair, having waist length brown hair, albeit straight. She promised to use a ruler. XD;
All said and done, I'm pretty happy with my hair at the moment, and it's the only thing I'm pretty happy with physically. XD I can't wait until it's at least BSL, but it'll be probably 2 or more years before I reach there curly. Ah well. I can wait.
Thanks for reading my update guys. : )
Hey guys and girls,
I've been busy with the new baby and Christmas and all but I finally decided how to start my personal revolution against the local Hair Nazi school board.
In order to gain support from (and for) the students in Jefferson Co. I created a MySpace profile. It's called "It's Only Hair", best of all it's free. he he.
In 4 days I gained 14 friends (not counting my own family and Tom) so I'm feeling pretty optimistic about the whole thing.
Check it out, let me know what you think.
Cheers,
Paul
After overwhelming feedback to sway me away from getting a perm, I decided to try some alternatives. Today I went to the store and got some thickening serum, an ionic hair dryer with volumizing finger diffuser, some "all natural" volumizing shampoo and conditioner and some "self-holding" rollers/curlers. My hair looked pretty good - FOR A FEW MINUTES. Not as curly as I wanted, but it had a lot more volume, albeit briefly.
Although a perm would be an "easy fix" and likely give me the volume and waves or curls I want, you guys gave me plenty of reasons to reconsider. There's still a little part of me that wants to get a perm even though I know about the damage and potential tangling issues it can cause.
Since I used all of the above-mentioned products at once, it's hard to tell which product was responsible for what. But here's a basic summary:
1. The "self-holding" rollers were AWFUL! They knotted my hair and I practically had to rip them out, taking a lot of hair out in the process. I'll either return them or exchange for "clip-on" type rollers which should be better for long hair.
2. The "ionic" hair dryer is a pretty fancy model. I rarely use a hair dryer, but this one can use hot, warm or cold air (I'll avoid the hot air setting). If the negative ions are turned on, it's supposed to dry the hair faster. The positive ions, which I used, are supposed to be for hair conditioning. The volumizing finger diffuser attachment is probably what gave me the volume and "big hair" although it was rather short lived and got rid of my natural curls leaving me with more straight hair (not the effect I was hoping for). But, I'll keep the hair dryer for occasional use.
3. The "all natural" volumizing shampoo and conditioner, like many others I have tried, promised amazing results but didn't deliver. At least it's all natural. It's worth buying just for that.
4. The thickening serum may have helped add a bit of volume and definitely made my hair feel softer. I'm anxious to try it again if/when I get different curlers or rollers.
I forgot to get the Biotin and MSM supplements/vitamins. I'll get them when I go back to return the curlers. Sorry for such a long message but I didn't have time to write a shorter one (if that even makes sense). Plus, I felt I owed you guys a quality reply for all of the time and effort you took to reply to me in the previous thread. Here's a few more pictures from today:

Hi all! I think its a great site you guys have here, I was looking over some topics that were about growing their hair out and thought hey why dont I start posting. I've been growing my hair out for about a year now and im not stopping anytime soon! Ive been looking at pics and I'm aiming for below shoulder blades good lengthy ponytail length (that was a mouthfull!). My hair is not naturally black, I dyed it not too long ago. I have never grown out my hair before but had always wanted to! It may come as strange, but to me long hair means things like adventure, journey, wisdom, charisma and the like.
Here is the most recent pic I have and will try to upload more soon. I often straighten my hair with a straightener because I do not like the natural curl I get. If anyone has any advice on anything, including the best shampoo and conditioner please let me know!
Grayson
Hello hello hello,
and Merry Christmas to you all ^.^
Maybe some of you will remember me but anyways: I decided that I should do an update for you all - before the year is over.
So here it is and I am proud to say that my hair has grown longer and I didn't cut it off :)
For now this must do - but I think you get an idea of the length and the constitution my hair is in at the moment :)
Comments are very welcome :)
Let it grow and keep up the great work - it's awesome to see how the community has developed
Neo
P.S.: Waaah! My parents are trying to force me to cut my hair - again. It drives me crazy as hell!
Hey guys and gals. It's been ages since I've posted. So long that my profile has been deleted from the user directory. I've lurked from time to time, but thought I'd put up an update for those who might remember me, or for any new members that might be interested.
It's been almost 5 and a half years that I've been growing my hair out, with a maintenance trim on average of once per year. That means that about 5 inches of hair has been trimmed off in 65 months. You'd think I should have hair at least 32 inches long by now. But, my longest hair is only 19 inches. Not only that, it doesn't look any longer than it did 2 years ago.
It's also looking thin on top - you can see my scalp. Unfortunately there are no older close-up pics of the top of my head, except for those I took today. Maybe it's always been like that, or maybe my hair is thinning and I've reached terminal length at 35 (almost 36) years of age. I've come to accept that my hair is thin and fine, and it's great to have long hair, but I had really hoped and expected it to look better after 5 years. My ponytail is thin. The hairline on the back of my head is high. My hair always looks thin and limp. Not to mention, I need to lose a lot of weight (no comments on that - it's a separate issue).
As for my hair... I've not used ANY chemicals on it in the last 5 years. Only good quality shampoo and conditioner - usually from a salon. Currently I'm using some that's supposed to add volume to my hair, but don't see a difference. Maybe now is the time to realize that my hair will not get any better looking - perhaps even the contrary.
So, I've made an appointment for a perm in 2 weeks. Yes, I know they'll use chemicals. My hair is slightly wavy, but I've always wanted it more curly, and getting a perm may give the appearance of more volume too. If it turns out awful and I hate it, I can always cut it to the length where I can tie a high ponytail and try regrowing it. Or, there are a few "longish" hair styles I kind of like - in the worst case...
So, what do you think of a perm? Anyone here had one? I'd love to see some before and after pics.
Here's a few more pictures I took today. The ones with a blue shirt were just before I washed my hair (not washed for 3 days), the ones with a brown shirt is right after I washed my hair and let it air dry:
hey guys! 2nd post here. the thing that really really bothers me about growing out my hair are the sideburns. they seem to stick out whenever i have my hair long enough in my case since my hair doesn't crop towards my face but fall straight. do you guys not shave the whole side area of your face when growing hair out? i'm going to the barber tom to have my sideburns shaved off. i go to a salon and hopefully that will be the last time next year i visit any of those places. =)
Hi everybody,
My wife just had a new baby! He was born the 20th and weighed 7 lbs and 1 oz. I told my friends he was born with a long red ponytail, one girl actually believed it. lol. He does have quite a bit of hair though.
Happy new year,
Paul
