I am now over forty and this is really the first time I have been
able to grow my hair out. I have very fine hair and would like
to do something to at volumn. I thought about a perm would
prefer to not do anything semi pernament. Any ideas on temporary
perms or other ways to add bulk without spending alot of time
or money?
Today I saw the movie Kundun, a movie about the 14th Dalai Lama. I will not review the movie here except to say it was full of stunning images. It's a great movie for viewing long hair, too (men, women, and horses). All the actors were Tibetan. Average hair length on women was waist length or a bit longer. Average hair length on men was also waist length if you exclude the shaved men. And it wasn't just long hair. The hair was styled in various kinds of braids, wraps, etc. Some of the elders associated with the Dalai Lama wore their hair braided with a ribbon and then carefully wrapped around their heads.
I searched for pictures on the web but found none. The trailer is 7 Mb, and I haven't looked at it yet (still downloading).
I just cut about 10 inches off my hair. It went from midback to just above my shulders, one length all round. Why? Because the bottom 10 inches was seriously damaged -- split, frizzy, uneven lengths, etc. A couple of months ago, someone posted some tips for growing long hair and keeping it healthy -- things like not brushing when wet, using a wide tooth comb, conditioning every time you shampoo, etc. There were about 20 tips and recommendations. I think someone else posted a link to a haircare site with similar advice. Anyway, I am determined to "do it right" this time, and get my hair down to my butt in perfect condition. Unfortunately, I did not download or print the good advice mentioned above. Can anyone help?
Does anyone have experience, good, bad or indifferent, with minoxidil?
I'm beginning to notice thinning on top, and want to stave it off
as long as possible. Thanks.
where did rollermania web site go?
This is a topic we've debated a few times, but I found a web page with
at least a slightly different take on it, which encouraged me to do
yet *more* research on the subject (in case no one's noticed, I have
this tendency to research topics to death...) Please note, these are
quotes, not my opinions:
First, from "Should Men Have Long Hair?"
>SHOULD MEN HAVE LONG HAIR?
>
>Many Christians claim that God does not want men to have long hair.
>They are wrong: God loves long-haired men.
>
>According to God's law, a man must not cut the hair at the sides of
>his head and he must not clip the edges of his beard. (Leviticus
>19:27) If a man is a NazariteÑ - one who is specially dedicated to
>God - he must not cut his hair at all. (Numbers 6:5)
>
>The Bible tells us that Absalom, king David's son, was the most
>handsome man in all Israel: he cut his hair only once a year. (2
>Samuel 14:25) The apostle Paul, however, wrote: "Does not even
>nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor
>to him?" (l Corinthians 11:14). But nature teaches us nothing of the
>sort. Perhaps Paul, who was bald, was jealous of men who had long

>We can therefore safely conclude, on biblical evidence, that Jesus,

>Read the Bible!
Further, if you go to the best Bible search page I've found (at
http://bible.gospelcom.net/bible) and search on the word "hair" you'll
find 81 matches. No, I'm not going to put them all here, especially
since most are talking about goats and camels... however, here's a few
interesting ones (I use RSV translation, incidentally):
Leviticus 10:6. And Moses said to Aaron and to Elea'zar and Ith'amar,
his sons, "Do not let the hair of your heads hang loose, and do not
rend your clothes, lest you die, and lest wrath come upon all the
congregation;"
While the synopsis above does justice to Leviticus 19:27, I think you
guys will like the actual words of Numbers 6:5: "All the days of his
vow of separation no razor shall come upon his head; until the time is
completed for which he separates himself to the LORD, he shall be
holy; he shall let the locks of hair of his head grow long."
Further, Numbers 6:18 has a nasty penance if such a Nazarite sins:
"And the Nazirite shall shave his consecrated head at the door of the
tent of meeting, and shall take the hair from his consecrated head and
put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace
offering." If you've ever smelled burning hair, you'll realise this
is part of the punishment....
Of course, Samson was a Nazarite (Judges 16:17-19): "And he told her
all his mind, and said to her, 'A razor has never come upon my head;
for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I be
shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak, and
be like any other man.' When Deli'lah saw that he had told her all
his mind, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying,
'Come up this once, for he has told me all his mind.' Then the lords
of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their
hands. She made him sleep upon her knees; and she called a man, and
had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to
torment him, and his strength left him."
Bill in SF will definately like Proverbs 20:29: "The glory of young
men is their strength, but the beauty of old men is their gray hair."
Jeremiah has several passages (7:29, 9:26, 25:23, 49:32) talking about
how cutting one's hair is synonymous with being unholy. Similarly,
the listing of horrible things which will happen to enemies of Israel
in Micah 1 ends with a threat that Mare'shahites shall be shaven bald.
Ezekial gives instructions for Levitical priests, which refers to hair
in 5:1, 16:7, 23:34 and especially 44:20: "They shall not shave their
heads or let their locks grow long; they shall only trim the hair of
their heads."
Which brings us to Saul of Tarsus (nee St. Paul), who in Acts 18:18
shaves his head, then in 1 Corinthians 11, 1 Timothy 2, and 1 Peter 3,
tells what "nature" shows us about long hair on men and women.
Finally, in case no one's guessed yet, I have more sympathy for
Gnosticism than Nicean (Catholic and Orthodox) creeds, so using the
Gnostic search engine at http://www.gnosis.org/search_form.html I
found a few more interesting tidbits...
Theodotus 39 reads "And he said, too, that on account of their hair
and finery, women are punished by the Power that is set over these
matters; which also gave to Samson strength in his hair; which
punishes the women who allure to fornication through the adornment of
their hair." I'm sure he'd be just as displeased with how much I
(and other men) enjoy men and women who melt over long hair....
Reply to Faustus the Manichaean 6:1: "not to appoint as priest a bald
man, or a man with red hair, or any similar peculiarity, as being
unclean in the sight of God, are things which we both despise and
laugh at, and rank as of neither first nor second importance; and yet
they are all precepts and judgments of the Old Testament. You cannot
blame me for rejecting the Old Testament;" Now I didn't find any
mention of red hair in the OT (I looked, especially since mine's the
colour of bright copper), but Faustus is specifically saying that he
doesn't place weight on denying baldies and redheads the opportunity
for priesthood. hmm...
The Stromata of Celems Alexandrius, Book II, Chapter XVIII, paragraph
6 states that if a master falls in love with a female captive should
shave her hair, both to shame such a disgraceful love, and also to
determine whether it's love or lust, since no one could possibly lust
after a shaved head. (heh)
And in Book VI, Chapter XVII, paragraph 9 the Stromata says: "But if
'the very hairs are numbered, and the most insignificant motions,' how
shall not philosophy be taken into account? For to Samson power was
given in his hair, in order that he might perceive that the worthless
arts that refer to the things in this life, which lie and remain on
the ground after the departure of the soul, were not given without
divine power."
Irenaeus Against Heresies, Book II, 26:2 may be criticising Celems
Alexandrius--he doesn't say which sect he's attacking--for analysing
Jesus' comment about "even the hairs on your head are all numbered" by
"inquiring into the number of hairs on each one's head, and endeavour
to search out the reason on account of which one man has so many, and
another so many, since all have not an equal number, but many
thousands upon thousands are to be found with still varying numbers,
on this account that some have larger and others smaller heads, some
have bushy heads of hair, others thin, and others scarcely any hair at
all,--and then those who imagine that they have discovered the number
of the hairs, should endeavour to apply that for the commendation of
their own sect which they have conceived?"
But by far the most interesting passage is the fortieth paragraph of
the Apocryphon of John: "And the powers began: the first one,
Goodness, created a bone-soul; and the second, Foreknowledge, created
a sinew-soul; the third, Divinity, created a flesh-soul; and the
fourth, the Lordship, created a marrow-soul; the fifth, Kingdom,
created a blood-soul; the sixth, Envy, created a skin-soul; the
seventh, Understanding, created a hair-soul. And the multitude of the
angels attended him and they received from the powers the seven
substances of the natural in order to create the proportions of the
limbs and the proportion of the rump and the proper working together
of each of the parts."
Oo! the imagery of a hair-soul!
I think the message in all this is pretty clear: If you want to
follow Old Testament law and/or the law of Jesus Christ, grow your
hair as long as it will grow, or maybe cut it annually if you prefer,
and never cut your beard for length, although you can trim the sides.
If you want to be Catholic or Orthodox, and place Saul's writings on
a pedestal, men have to cover and/or shave their hair before entering
a church to worship, but women are forbidden to do so. Finally, if
you prefer Gnostic texts over Nicean, it obviously has the attitude
that long hair is beautiful, but different writers have different
notions about how to treat that beauty....
But remember, the seventh power (a class of angel), which is
Understanding, created a hair-soul for us.... as the final detail in
the creation of us humans.
hmm.... can you tell I get bored at work on Saturdays? :->
Can anyone help me? I am looking for a man in his 30's and very cute with long hair!!
Longhairs are not distributed evenly throughout the population. Some locales have a higher percentage of us than do others. In our work lives we are far less mobile than in other spheres, so it is important that we find a workgroup where we fit, and hopefully a field where we fit, so we have mobility. To help us all in this quest, it would be helpful to have information from others who have faced this issue - fellow longhairs. Thus this survey:
(To assure consistent results, for the purposes of this survey, "longhair" means a man whose hair can cover his ears and touch his collar.)
1. What is your line of work? (Indicate two things, the job you do and the business of the employer, such as "I am a salesclerk for a department store.")
2. (For this question, if your employer is huge, break off your department or division, or other group small enough for you to provide numbers for.) How many men are there in your place of work, and how many (including yourself if appropriate) are longhairs?
3. Estimate the percent of men that are longhairs in your FIELD (that is, at all employers taken together, not just at yours):
4. In what locality do you work (city, state, or region)?
Keeping in mind the difference between being merely "tolerated" and being truly "accepted", answer these three questions:
5. On a scale of 1 to 10, how accepted do you feel in your workplace as a longhair by bosses? (1=highly shunned, 10=very accepted)
6. On that same scale, how accepted do you feel as a longhair by fellow workers?
7. And on that same scale, how accepted do you feel as a longhair by people in general in your FIELD?
Thank you for your responses!
Hey all!
I got back from a spiritual retreat of sorts at an intentional
community not too long ago, and just now am getting back on the
net!
What a great bunch of discussions there are on the board!
A couple of things for what it's worth -
While I was on leave, I met this really charming younger couple from
Eastern Europe, both with really long, beautiful, (and enviable) hair. We started talking about hair, and I told them about this board. They then told me something I knew I'd have to pass on -
They had a contest to see whose hair would grow fastest, and the
woman won bigtime. She said that her mother had handed her a couple of secrets for long hair - Garlic Water for one, and onion juice!
She told me that what you do is boil garlic, (she didn't give any specific amount, but it sounded like it would have to be at least a
few). Then you take the water after it's cooled, and rub it into your hair and scalp especially, and let it dry, then sit in the sun. I couldn't believe something that sounded so wive's tail-esque, but she swears by it, and her boyfriend swore it worked as he watched her hair outgrow his!
With the onions, you mash them up, (pureeing would probably work best, until their liquified), and rub the "juice" into your hair, then do as you did before. Although I'd be willing to try the first one, I thought this one would not only be too smelly, but also the acid from the juice would probably do horrors to your hair!
Also, something I couldn't help notice is that my hair really shot out after a couple of weeks on this farm. I think I've figured out what it was that may have contributed.
The whole time I was on retreat, I ate REALLY healthy - alot of brown rice, tofu, and granola kind of foods. The only dairy I took in was cream, not milk, straight from the cow. Also fresh veggies pulled right out of the ground.
Does anyone know the benefits of diet to hair growth? I don't know much about nutrition necessarily, but it was the only thing that changed in that period from my daily urban life. That and alot slower pace, and alot less stress! And when I got back, everyone remarked how much my hair had grown.
On another note, for those of you who remember my last post, there was a picture of a guy posted who I said I looked like. My co-workers thought it was me with a wig! (My hairs long, but not THAT long . . . yet!). Well, I'm sending a pic via snail mail to V, the webmaster, and hopefully soon you'll be seeing my mug and my hair here on the board!
So . . . how's everyone doing? What's new and exciting? Whose the 15 year old with the hair to the floor? I can't believe the story kid, sorry. Although children's hair naturally grows faster than adults, it's not that much faster!
Hope all are doing well!

I just stumbled upon this site, and I am very pleased to find other people who have admiration and respect for the beauty and power of long hair on both sexes.
I have always absolutely loved long hair on women, and I always admired the very beautiful long hair on a friend of mine, and I don't have a problem admitting that I can appreciate beauty in all it's forms, in a man or a woman, and this has been misunderstood and slandered by some people as an indication that I must be gay or bisexual, which I am not. I am very secure in my sexual identity, and I respect, accept and appreciate all manifestations of the divine, no matter how different from me they may be.
Long hair is unquestionably on of the most beautiful things about human beings, men and women, and it boggles my mind that most people cannot see and appreciate this. My desire for long hair has been a life-long struggle against family, religion, society, authority figures, and even so-called "friends" and "family", those that profess to love me. I suspect that they love me the way a pet owner love his bird that he keeps locked in a cage, with a sick kind of controlling love. I am sure that many, if not most, men out there with long hair have dealt with this. But, I digress...
Besides the aesthetic aspects of long hair, there are the the spiritual aspects, which I am very interested in, and would like to learn more about. Perhaps I could write about what I have learned so far, and anyone with more information or interest on this topic could contact me? Well...
The Lion, the King of the Jungle and of all Beasts, has a beautiful golden mane, and it is unquestionably a factor in his apprearance, and probably the existence of, his powerfully regal and kingly existence.
I also find it interesting that Samson of Biblical fame had long hair, and that it was the source of his power. Once it was cut, he became weak.
I must say, that when my hair was quite long before, I felt very powerful, sensual and intuitive, and that when I foolishly cut it, I felt lost, like an insect without it's antennae. I actually felt as if I were psychospiritually castrated.
I just read on the web that Rastafarians consider their dredlocks to be like antennae, and that one man actually referred to them as "high tension wires" that could receive (and transmit) some type of vibrational energy.
Has anyone else ever noticed any feelings of power, sensitivity and intuition (or "knowing") when they had (or have) long hair, and a lack of these traits when they had short hair?
The way society and most people treat men with long hair absolutely enrages me.
I cannot believe that many, if not most, so-called "Christians" (such as my "family") have the nerve to denigrate and castigate me and other men with long hair, yet they profess to worship a long-haired messiah.
If they really believe that Jesus Christ (or Y'shua, etc.) was really "God as Man" and/or the "Son of God" and/or "The Messiah", why wouldn't they try to emulate him by growing their hair long, and why do they look down upon those of us that do? They are clearly lost fools.
Well, I'm off to peruse the Samson site more, but I'd love to hear from others with long hair, and if anyone can direct me to any sites on the web (or even books) that talk about long hair on men, and especially it's psycho-spiritual attributes, I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks, and Happy Holidays to All.

Hey guys!
I work in an executive setting, and have for about a year and a half.
That means a three piece suit or some equivalent every day.
The cool thing is that I wear my hair down and never have gotten any grief over it, which I'm grateful for, especially in this environment. I occasionally get a dirty look from one of the older, gray haired execs, who is much more conservative, but that's not the kind of people in my division.
Anyway, in going back and answering the other part of Q2, I remembered something that's helped me.
I WAS getting nervous about my hair's appearance, 'cause I had that less than attractive flip going on through out the growing stages, which drove me crazy, and really looked bad with the exec look.
So Franco, my hairdresser, when I told him the prob, fixed it.
When he trims my ends, about every three months or more, he BLUNT CUTS the ends.
Then, he blows the hair curling it under. No more flip, and my hair looks great, very styled that fits in with the slick look I need for the board room.
So what about at home? At first, I was having a hard time copying the look, and I'd end up with the flip again, which really bothered me, but it was due to the way I was blowing it.
I've finally got it figured out, where the ends always curl under naturally, so I don't get that flip.
With my head tilted over to one side, (actually, I bend from the hip),
I brush all the hair in back towards the floor, so it's hanging straight down.
Then I take my hair blower and blow into the hair from the side, not the front or back.
If it's laying like this:
HEAD \\\\\\\\\ and the \ is the hair hanging down, then I blow to
the right, always blowing from the side instead of from the front of back. Same for the opposite side:
//////// HEAD Blow to the left.
What I've found this does with a blunt cut is that it helps the hair naturally turn under, instead of flipping out. When I'd blow from the front or back I'd still get that yucky flip. By the way, I don't use a hairbrush, just my fingers, and not very much at all during this part.
I usually switch back and forth once after the initial drying, and then once the hair is pretty much drier, then I straighten my head and blow it as regular, then use my cold-air setting all over to cool off the hair.
It works, and at least in this corporate setting, it looks good enough to keep me out of hot water.
Tigg
In case you're thinking I might be a younger kid who can get away with this look, I'm actually 34, and one of the older gentlemen in this division.
Anyone,
My email won't allow me to click on peoples names to email them, and I'd like to contact Coyote Pup on some religious topics, so if anyone has it and could send it to me, I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks,
Erik
I'll be on vacation on the east coast (NY, PA, MD) from 12/22 through 12/31. I will not be able to check my email but will check this board, so if you need to contact me, post a reply to this thread.
Also, if anybody has any suggestions of hair-related places to visit in any of these states, post away.
Hi! I have white/blond hair that is mid-back length in the back and short in the front. These little hairs always stick up, is there any way to get rid of them without the greasy look? I'm only 15 so I have a limited budget. Does anybody have any links on people with this color and length of hair?
Having read through the concerns of long haired men about getting jobs with long hair and also the questions regarding how the employer accepts their employee's long hair in the Long Hair Survey on the Men's Long Hair Hyperboard, I wonder whether there is some kind of organisation of long haired men which will fight for their human right to have long hair without dicrimination.
I believe most long haired men who post their comments and questions on the Hyperboard are from North America where I believe there are constitutional rights to protect the human right of the individual to have long hair.
I have not however heard of such an organisation in North America, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, which makes me wonder why long haired men have not formed some sort of organisation to defend their rights.
Hey look, the civil rights movement among the Blacks have won them some protection against discrimination.
The women have fought for some kind of equality. The gays and lesbians have won some protection agains discrimination.
So why don't long haired men form some organisation such as a long haired men's union or association to fight for acceptance and protect themselves against discrimination?
After all, long haired men protested against the war in Vietnam, engage in pretty heroic efforts to defend the environment and so on but why not to defend themselves against discrimination?
Regards
Charles
(of course we already have a FAQ here, but that's a bit of basic tech
info to make it so posting is smoother...)
since I've noticed a few threads reoccur on a regular basis, I was
wondering if a FAQ was in order for this board specifically, and long
hair on men in general? I volunteer to research and compile the FAQ,
provided that Victor is okay with the idea of it then being me writing
"The Men's Long Hair FAQ" which he can then use freely.
incidentally, I've noticed a tendency of FAQs which have questions
which are not frequently asked by any stretch of imagination, and so
for starters I'd like to suggest the following questions which I've
noticed either being beaten to death or just being re-asked once a
month or so:
1) How do I grow my hair long?
2) How do I encourage my boyfriend/husband to grow his hair long?
3) What long hair styles look good on men?
4) How will my boss (or future boss) feel about long hair?
5) Do men with long hair get unwanted attention from gay/bisexual men?
my starter answers (which of course need development and feedback,
which is why I'm posting :) are:
1. Don't cut it.
No, seriously, normal hair grows six inches per year, with each
hair having a lifespan of four-seven years before falling out and
being replaced with a new hair. However, if you dye, perm, bleach,
spray, gel or tease your hair, about half the growth will be weak and
split. Also, your hair may not be "normal" by that definition, and
grow faster or slower, or have longer or shorter maximum lengths.
The hardest period of time to get through is when the majority of
your hair reaches someplace along your shoulder-blades. It constantly
falls in your face, won't stay in a ponytail, your friends will remind
you of how awkward it looks and you'll really wonder if it's worth it.
It is. Once it gets past that length, you can use some method such as
keeping it trimmed at mid-back until all your hair is even, or
something similar, but once you get it past your shoulder-blades, it's
incredibly easy to manage, looks gorgeous and feels wonderful. If you
need encouragement while it's in the awkward length, most of the
people here will be happy to give some.
The most awkward hairs to grow long are the front (bangs). Common
tricks for dealing with medium lengths on these hairs are hats,
bandannas, a part extremely on one side which at least limits how much
of your face is obscured (plus can look very hot when you need to
brush it back with your hand every ten minutes--very enjoyably
distracting to most anyone attracted to men), or minimal amounts of
mousse or hairspray.
Many hair products claim to strengthen hair and/or help it grow,
and some of them are even telling the truth. There doesn't seem to be
any difference between what works well on male or female hair, and the
same products are most popular with both genders. The brand you'll
hear mentioned most often is Pantene Pro-V, with V-05, Citre, Aveda
and Infusium-23 also quite popular amoung long-hairs. Don't shampoo
every day, and condition either whenever you shampoo or every other
time you shampoo. Once you like a product, stick with it--while the
effectiveness of these hair products seem to be about the same,
varying only from person to person, constantly changing what you put
in your hair is an effective way to keep it from growing quickly.
Finally, the other very effective method to get your hair long is
by getting permanent braids or dreadlocks. If you do this, after your
hair falls out, it stays connected with the attached hairs, and will
continue to increase the length of "your hair" if not having anything
to do with the rate of growth or the lifespan of each hair. The world
record-holders for longest hair are two brothers with 17-foot locks in
Thailand, who wash their hair once a year with fabric softener, with
the understandable result that it's all matted into one long clump.
Obviously, most of it fell out years ago and is just attached to the
hair which hasn't.
(Incidentally, does anybody know what is the record for longest
*growing* hair on a man?)
2. First, compliment them on it. Men are persuaded by attention and
kind words at least as effectively as women (usually more, since men
often aren't used to people commenting on their appearance).
Next, get them talking with men who enjoy having long hair, such
as The Men's Long Hair Hyperboard. Hearing someone who's been there
and has encouragement for what you're doing works wonders.
3. Most people agree that loose, braids and ponytails look good, plus
many people have their own preferences. If you check out some of the
following URLs, you can get a good idea of how some styles look on
men:
http://the-light.com/mens/longhair.html
http://www.safari.net/~hairtech/hairtech.htm
http://www.brosmag.com/
http://www.hairworks.com/brhair/galeria/men.htm
Since perms can being very damaging to hair, many people recommend
roller sets to create curls, which only last few days, but don't do
any noticeable damage to the hair.
4. Of course, this varies from employer to employer, but the common
threads are that employers don't usually mind long hair, just having
their customers see umkempt styles, and that if you give in a little
bit, your boss will figure that they can dictate your appearance to
you. Therefore, keep your hair looking neat and professional, and if
your boss ever asks you to cut your hair, determine whether they are
refering to length or style, and if they are saying length, don't give
in even a little bit or you'll always give in.
Other good tips are:
Find a job where you don't have to see any customers face-to-face
on a daily basis.
Don't even discuss the issue with minimum-wage employers, just
realise that such jobs are dime-a-dozen, but people who will work hard aren't. If they think they can hold your job over you, let them know
they can't.
Don't remove length before a job interview. You'll just be
growing it back anyways, and it's much easier to find a job where they
know you have long hair than trying to grow long hair at a job when
they have a mental picture of you with short hair.
Don't even mention the law until your employer indicates that your
position may be affected, but the moment they even imply such a thing
bluntly state the the law is unequivicable on the subject of a
double-standard for appearance between men and women, and is without a
doubt gender-based harassment. The fact is that the legal process
will not get you anywhere, but will cause them at least as much pain
as it will you. But mentioning that you feel that your employer's
behaviour is discriminating against you to them will make your
workplace very hostile, especially if they feel they are in the right.
Find someplace to work which already employs long-haired men.
5. Not really. Most gay and bi men try to avoid hitting on straight
men at all costs, usually out of basic kindness and consideration
rather than fear of homophobia, and will often be as considerate as
they can on issues of sexuality. From my experience, when anyone
(gay, straight, or bi) is attracted to anyone else, but not sure about
their sexuality, they broach the subject very slowly and delicately.
And when a man compliments another man about their appearance, they
usually just compliment and then let it drop.

if anyone has suggestions for more questions to add or more detail for
the answers, or any other feedback, please let me know.
