Hey friends, I'm a hairstylist and big fan of guys with long hair. Here's some information I can share to help you have the longest, strongest, most awesome hair possible.
1: Remember most people's hair grows about a half-inch per month. So if you're not cutting your hair at all, thats about 6 inches a year. Hair grows faster in the summer, and your hair growth is a reflection of your general health and hydration levels. A healthy diet with plenty of protein and lots of water will give you stronger hair faster.
2: Our hair follicles constantly cycle through three phases. A growing phase (hair strand getting longer) a dropping phase (hair strand sheds out) and a dormant phase (rest period before the new hair begins growing). This cycle repeats over and over for life, and the max length you can grow depends on how long your growing phase lasts. If your growing phase lasts 8 years for example, your hair will never get longer than 4 feet, even if you never ever cut it (see above, #1) This is determined by heredity. Luckily, our hair follicles aren't all synched up or we'd lose all our hair at once, but even so, most people lose about 100 hairs a day from follicles in the dropping phase, and thats no big deal.
3: Curly hair takes longer to get long than bone straight hair. It travels in circles rather than in a straight line. The curlier your hair is, the more likely it is to get "big" rather than "long" but stick it out and you'll get there eventually.
4: The right shampoo and conditioner does make a difference. No matter what you use, lather the shampoo at your scalp only, and just let the runoff clean the ends. Then towel blot your hair really well, and saturate your lengths with conditioner. Comb it through for a few minutes, and rinse it well with cool water. Here are some recommended products for you guys....
For everyone: Nioxin Shampoo #1 and Scalp Therapy #1. This inexpensive shampoo/conditioner was developed for men who are suffering from male pattern balding because it removes the hormone from your scalp that causes your hair to fall out. For those of us who are not balding, it makes your scalp as healthy and clear as possible which allows it to grow the best hair possible. I find this also makes hair growth speed up considerably. Seriously. Leave the lather on your scalp for 5 minutes, and use this particular conditioner on your lengths AND your scalp for the best result. It feels fantastic.
For everyone: Once a month, shampoo with Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash. This paraben and sulphate free shampoo has alpha hydroxy acids which exfoliate your scalp and hair strands. If your hair is frizzy or tangled, part of the problem is raised cuticles on your hair strands. They're like little velcro hooks all down the length of a strand, and they grip onto eachother which tangles your hair. The alpha hydroxys in Maxi Wash will buff them right off and leave your hair nice and smooth.
For hair thats particularly dry, frizzy, or fuzzy: Use a silicone based serum on your hair after you've washed and conditioned it, and again as needed between shampoos. This is not a styling product, but more of a protective sealant that will hydrate your hair and give it a little buffer over ever strand so it wont get ratty. Try Moroccanoil Light, Sebastian Flashlight, or if you're feeling fancy, Oribe Supershine.
Good luck!
I know this is just another way to "keep myself busy" while (un)patiently waiting for my hair to grow out, but I want to start measuring my hair each month to see progress.
I did it last month, but I had a hard time figuring the out the BEST way to do this. I measured the front few hairs. It was definitely a rough estimate, but it got me thinking. What if I don't measure the same hairs? Or what if the hairs I measured fall out for regrowth? I've seen a few "progress charts" that have very detailed and accurate measurements and was just wondering what the best way to go about this is.
I like to see progress!

I don't think I have ever posted a pic here of my hair tailed. Sometimes I segment my hair if I am going to be working outdoors, but usually I use just one hair tie.

Have not posted much, but do check in from time to time. Thought it was about time I posted a couple of photos (taken just a few minutes ago) of my current hair status after losing so much of my mane following surgery over a year ago.
Wishing all here a great New Years and keep it growing and flowing in 2011 and beyond!

I've run into a new, if somewhat annoying, milestone. Tonight my wife sat down next to me on the couch and sat on the ends of my hair, which is now long enough to spread out just a bit behind me when I'm sitting. Our resident cat has also walked or sat on it a couple of times lately.
A good sign for growth purposes, but not my favorite, lol.

Just came across this site the other day and wanted to post since I am definitely one of you. Interestingly though, I didnt really intend to be a longhair at any point. I always had shaggy/moppy haircuts and about 3 and a half years ago when I started graduate school I just got too busy to think about my hair. Several months later my girlfriend was goofing around and said she I thought I could put my hair in a ponytail. I laughed and let her have a go, and surprisingly a lot of if fit, though good chunks up front were still too short. I decided then i wanted to grow it out long enough to be able to have a really ponytail at least to be able to say that i had at one time. Luckily it only took a couple months for my bangs to make it. Once I had it though i liked it so much that i kept growing and dont plan to ever go short again. Here is a pick like a usually wear it. Dont like it loose muc, plus in my lab thats not the best idea.

So I was riding my bike in chinatown in DC and within 1 minutes someone said get out of the street you hippie.
I felt like laughing but this time I snapped on them. New York has taught me to take no crap.
Hey guys...Some of you may remember me. I dont post often (I'm really pretty shy!) but I do lurk often and visit the board almost everyday. I'm at work or else I would post a current pic of myself as a reminder. Anyways, I have worked at a VERY large telecommunications company in Atlanta for over 4 years and currently hold a night shift supervisor position. Love the job, love the pay, love the fact that I can have long hair (its down to my shoulder blades) and a beard and nobody cares or says anything about it. However, we have been hit with a vicious round of layoffs (about 25 people in my department alone) and I really dont feel that my job is that secure right now. Its really a question of WHEN I get layed off, not IF. No other telecomm companies around seem to be hiring (the bad economy has hit this industry HARD) so I've looked everywhere for employment from AT&T to Costco and even thought about becoming a police officer. But I REALLY REALLY REALLY dont want to cut my hair and/or shave my beard. Yet just about any and every good paying job that I can find has a strict grooming policy. I even looked into being a QuickTrip store manager and they say on their website that no long hair or even facial hair is allowed. I was a fire fighter for about 5 years before my current job and I hated having short hair and being forced to shave everyday. I actually think I hate the idea of shaving everyday more than the idea of cutting my hair! I know I would hate it if I became a cop or went back to the fire dept. but I really need to think about my future. I'm 30, not married, no kids. But still, I may some day find Mrs. Right and have little ones and I dont want to be working at wal-mart or mcdonalds for minimum wage when I'm 45 or 50 (no offense to anyone that may work there) just because I dont want to cut my hair. So I guess I'm wondering: WHAT DO ALL YOU LONG HAIRS ON THIS BOARD DO FOR A LIVING? What jobs or companies do you know that will allow long hair on guys? I'd like to make a living that is close to what I make now (40-50 thousand a year if possible) without being forced to cut my hair and adhere by society's outdated standards. None of my "real world" friends are long hairs and when I complain about cutting my hair they all say "whatever! just get a damn haircut already!" So I came to you guys here hoping for some better advice. If nothing else, I just needed somebody to vent to that understands me. :)

A few weeks ago I promised to post an action shot of my hair.
This photo taken during the 2009 Soccer 7's International Master's Tournament in Tenerife, shows me tussling with former Scotland International Darren Jackson, who earned 28 caps for his country and played for various top flight football clubs including Hiberian, Celtic, Newcastle and Hearts amongst others.
Oh... and it gives a great view of my ponytail in its natural wavy state.

Here are some update photos of my hair at about 33 months, just after washing.
Hey guys. I used to post here but I haven't been able to use the internet much between school and learning a ridiculous amount of audition music for some schools I'm looking at, but I've started lurking occasionally and now I'm going to come out of the shadows once again. Anyway, today makes the 19th month I've gone without a haircut. I'm still having trouble believing that it's been more than a month since my last haircut, but I'm not complaining! :-) Now that I'm taking a momentary hiatus from the stress of life, I'll be reacquainting myself with the board and such. I look forward to posting here with more frequency and becoming a productive member of the board.
Chris.
Today, on our public radio station KERA (kera.org), I heard a wonderful hair story.
There was a call-in question/answer session asking listeners (I'm paraphrasing this) "What one thing from your past would you like to do again before you reach your Golden Years?"
One listener called in and said that he had grown his hair long when he was in high school, and then kept it very short after he was done with school.
He later (age 57 now) grew his hair to lower back length for the very first time since high school. He was amazed at how nice his hair looked and that it still had most of the color it did when he was in high school. This person was very emotional, almost in tears, as he was describing how wonderful it felt to grow his hair out again!
A wonderful hair-related story I heard from out of the blue on the radio today. This made my day!

P.S. This aired sometime between 1:30 - 1:45pm CST during "Think".
So lately I've been taking Fish Oil Omega 3 and Vitamin B Complex w/ Biotin to help speed up my hair growth. They've been helping tremendously to speed it up. About a 1" a month or more.
This year alone I've had a sinus infection, bronchitis(sp?) and now I'm on my 2nd cold. Last time I was sick was 6 years ago with anything. Just wondering if anyone else here is having the same issues?
Hey all!
So for the past month or so I've used organic shampoo and have loved it. My hair can actually go a week without looking greasy smelling awful. The next step I'd like to take is using baking soda and vinegar to clean my hair. Has anyone tried this before and what have your experiences been with it? Thanks!
Rich
While recently checking out Hairfreaky's many inspiring longhaired YouTube videos, i just recently discovered this new [to me] longhaired man's videos on YouTube -- including some AWESOME braiding and bun-making vids, excellent in every way!
He does his self-braiding as well as makes his basic hair-twist style buns in the same way that I do, the only difference being that his hair is WAAAY longer and fuller than mine is [sob sob while turning green with envy - LOL).... Well worth checking his videos out!! Here's the YouTube info / link:

Well, Tomorrow I cross a threshold. I will pull my hair back and wear a tail to work. It is getting longer, amd I wanted to wait a bit before doing so. However, my hair, though straight, is thick and is refusing to stay behind my ears. Therefore I will pull back what can be held into a tail situated slightly higher than I will finally wear one. This is to gather all the hairs I can. Those not long enough...yet, I will use a light spritzing. and maybe pins (if needed and I buy some) Wish me luck, I haven't worn a tail to work in 30 years.
Hello All
Marry Christmas and Happy New Year
This is my first Thread-post since I introduced myself a week or 2 ago.
I just have the one question.
It has been roughtly 9 months since my last haircut. My hair is already in the 8 to 9 inch range - thanks inpart to it still being "long for a guy" afterwords. And it is the longest its ever been so far.
But lately Ive been getting the strange feeling like my hair is short again - sometimes it even feels really short. And I was wondering: Is that normal? Does it only happen to first-time longhairs? Or does it happen to (some) people every time they grow their hair out?
Any answers would be greatly apreciated
Thank you

Christmas blessings to one and all,
(have just returned from a nearby Mall)
not so much buzz, or hardly a spike-
long hair is back, I note with delight. :-)
And now dear friends, I do wish to say,
Seasons greetings in such a special way-
may peace, joy and love reign now and forever,
and to cut your locks(?): never, never, never!
Merry Christmas Guys and a joyous and Happy New Year to you all. A year of peace, harmony and good-will.
Justin~
ps: Hope Santa remembers that I wanna Sandbox this year cause last year he forgot and gave me a lump of coal.......and ALL I asked for last year was an ounce of Gold. LOL :-) Be good.
Happy Holidays From all of us at MLHH
Cheers
Kevin
I read this on a Green Bay Packers blog:
"You know Clay Matthews III would like a shampoo deal.
Lammi Sports Management is working on that. But Matthews' agents are also pursuing an insurance policy for Matthews' hair for $5,000,000. Troy Polamalu's hair was insured for $1,000,000 but there is apparently reason to believe that Clay's hair value is actually in the $5,000,000 range. Here's the story on Troy Polamalu (click for link)."
Clay Matthews has a nice blonde mane, but is it worth more than Troy Polamalu's? Should we all start insuring our hair? :-)
