5yr old son update

I posted a message in August for insights and opinions about my 5yr old son asking for a hair cut. My major concern was the boys self image. I do not want to force him to have long hair, but hesitated to leave the decision to him before he is old enough to fully understand it's meaning. I received several and all were appreciated.

I am happy to say he still has his braids. His Dad went to his daycare and had a talk with them. I don't know what he said, but they, and the children stoped making comments about his hair. He has also started Kindergarden, and has had no problems there. He has not mentioned a hair cut in months:)

To answer some of the questions. The Hansons are from this area, so is Garth Brooks, this has no affect on my sons situation that I know of. Yes he is Native American, his Father is 4/4 creek. We do not live on a resavation, where boys with long braids are common. We live in Tulsa Oklahoma, The Buckle of the Bible Belt, short hair and cowboy boots.

I will try to post a photo for Thomas when I figure out how. I have no idea what someone could get from making up a situation like this, but I'm proud to show pics of my boy.

The thing that really annoys me about having curly hair is that I used to have straight hair 10 years ago. Being 18 years old, I would guess that maybe puberty had something to do with the change, but I can't pinpoint exactly when my hair started to go curly. Unless it was five or six years ago, it really couldn't be puberty, so what else then? All I can figure is that maybe a change in diet or something had an impact. I used to drink milk like crazy--I could go through a gallon a day easily. Now I never drink milk--water is my main drink now.
Anyway, if it *was* puberty, I'd still like to know why exactly it happened. It seems strange that something like that would happen. Maybe it was just stress?
Oh well...

Hello. I have attempted a few times to grow my hair out, but I always seem to run into a reason to cut it as it gets halfway through the bad stage (this last time was because of a job interview...I needed the job). Now that I have this job and am settled in, I'm thinking of growing my hair again (there are other guys at the office with long hair). I've always wanted long hair, but never got past the bad stage. My hair is coarse, and fairly thick. When my bangs start to get to about 2 or 3 inches, they curl up on me, but the rest of my hair is just kind of wavy after that length. What's up, and is there anything I can do about it? I can scan a photo if you feel you might want to look at it. Thanks...

Atkins Diet and Hair Loss - Help!!!

I have had long hair off and on since the seventies. I now want it all one length just past my shoulders and was almost there back in July of this year. Since then I have been shedding hair at the rate of from 200 to 300 a day. It seems like it is just the longer hairs that are falling. I have probably lost about 30% of my hair all over since then.

I wear my hair in a pony tail most of the time and have been getting a semi-permanent hair color done about every 6 weeks to keep the grey covered. The stylist has been working the color through to the ends each time. I have now limited the process to roots only to avoid any chance of cumulative damage. I'll see how this works.

I have some thinning on top but I don't think I have significant male pattern baldness tendencies. I switched from Rogaine to taking Propecia about 1 1/2 years ago and am still taking it. I resumed using Rogaine about two months ago when this shedding thing continued. The shedding seems to be less now. (Almost normal at about 100 a day.)
I am 56 and in good health (no thyroid problems)and have been taking Hair Formula 37 for over a year now. I went on the Atkins diet last May and lost about 30 lbs. over a 5 month period.

Does anyone have any ideas about what has caused this sudden hair loss and will it be permanent? Please help with any experiences or advice.

I'm leaning toward the diet and rapid weight loss as the cause.

Premature Grey

I have shoulder-blade length wavy black hair. (About 4 inches longer if pulled straight). My problem is that it is flecked with premature grey (I am only 30) especially over the ears and the crown.

People have suggested many reasons. Some say that it is being bleached by the sun, others that it is some vitamin deficiency, and one person told me that it happens when wet hair comes into contact with the pillow for a long time. Yet others insist that I have too much hair to nourish, and that I should cut it short.

Would some one please tell me of a remedy? I did hear that Vitamin E might solve the problem.

Just as a matter of interest neither of my parents had grey hair at my age. My father and his father went bald, though.

Hi:

Has anyone on this board, who have grown their hair out experienced their hair forming wings right above your ears? They are also forming at the very bottom of my hair in the back. Any solutions to make these wings fly away besides the baseball cap and gel?

Thanks

Advice on straight hair??

I'm been growing my hair for about 6 months now. It's not nearly where I want it to be but I'm willing to take the time to get there. However I have one problem. I have very straight, thin hair. I'm talking no wave or thivkness at all. When my hair gets to shoulder length is there any way to put a wave in it to add some thickness?? I don't want to be like some straight-haired long-haired guys I see who tuck their hair behind their ears..I think that looks awful. I want to let it go loose without doing that but I'm afraid I will never be able too. Can this look be attained by a hair stylist? Even to very straight thin hair?? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi, im 16 years old and my hair is at about the bottom of my ears all around, it is thick and i think its starting to look like crap. It gets all weird and starts going in odd directions. My stylist told me to use a round brush to curl it under. I cant get it to work though. From what I understand an undercut would solve most of the problems, Is this true, Would it make it lay down flat and be straight? If so how far would it need to be cut under, shaved to the scalp or a few inches off.

I just read some interesting discussions quite a bit down below about how some people worry girls don't like long hair guys. personally I don't think it would make you less attractive to girls, but whether it does or not, having long hair can make you EXTREMELY INTIMIDATING TO APPROACH.
just to give you guys a mental image, this is how intimidating I can look. I'm tall, slim, I have an oval face, clean shaven, straight black hair to my shoulders. I'd be wearing a trench coat (which I usually do), sometimes also wearing shades, with one of my hands inside the coat pocket and the other hand flipping a coin between the nuckles...
my housemate told me if he saw me on the street and didn't know me he'd seriously consider running away from me or at least staying away as far as possible cuz I look very dangerous.
now of course that's an extreme case but what I'm trying to say is just that by keeping your hair long the message people get from your appearance about your personality and character is generally that you are the less approachble kind, and maybe that's why some people experience negative or lack of attention from the female group while having long hair.
my two cents

Hair is POWER

Hau kola! (Hello friends)
I am here because Bill Choisser e-mailed me and complimented a page on my site that deals with what having long hair means to an Indigenous person. I appreciate the link Bill.
If you all don't mind, I would like to contribute to this message board, the meaning of long hair to many Indigenous people....
Very simply said- Hair is POWER! It is, and has been our identity for tens of thousands of years. The length of an Indians hair reminds him of the things he has learned. I can look at the ends of my braids and go back several years to reflect where I was.... and where I have come. For the Indian, long hair is TRADITION as well. In the old days, the grass dancers prepared the dance circle by dancing on the prairie grass. This matted the grass down flat. We did not CUT the grass, for that was disrespectful. It is much the same with our hair. To cut it is to disrespect our tradition and our Creator. My Gr. Grandmother went to 'Indian school' in Pennsylvania. They cut off the hair of all the boys who went to their so-called 'school'. Why do you think they did that? Because hair is POWER my relations! They knew if they cut our hair off, they were stealing our identity.... our inner strength and power. And so when I feel my hair tickling my waist.... when I feel the wind in my hair.... and when I tie the wraps onto the ends of my braids.... I stand with my ancestors! They chopped off the beautiful hair of thousands of Indian boys.... I am the legacy of these boys.... and so I grow my hair because they could not.... and I grow my hair because I am Lakota. As I braid my long straight dark hair, I celebrate my power.... my identity.... They will NOT cut MY hair. I am Lakota. And I am proud.

Hope I have contributed to your board in a positive way my friends. Stand tall and grow it LONG....

Your brother,
John Two-Hawks - Oglala Lakota Nation

Anyone like the movie The Big Lebowski? What do you think about Jeff Bridges (The Dude) with his long hair? I noticed he had it up at one side at one time with a big barrette. I laughed at the scene of the people coming after him with the giant scissors, and him running from them terrified. A reminder of how important our long hair is to our identity and love of who we are.

he grew his hair long when he did King Kong back in the 70s too.he realy likes his hair long

How about this one from the movie "Wild Bill"

He also had long hair in "Fisher King."

I just stumbled upon this site this morning and am really pleased to find it. I've wanted to grow my hair out long for years, but always get frustrated after a couple months and end up cutting it short.

I'm running into a couple problems and was hoping I could get some advice. First, I'm thinning VERY badly on top, and the crown is just not growing with the speed of the rest of my hair. Should I cut the other hair a bit shorter and wait for the crown to catch up? Or would I be better off just toughing it out until the length is where I want it?

Second, what hair I have is very corse and curly, and right now I'm getting this Bozo-the-Clown/Wings look on the sides. To keep everything under control I gel it to a faretheewell, but even that isn't helping much. Any suggestions on what I can do to keep it under control?
