I just had the worst hair experience today. I went to my hairdresser with hopes of getting light brown highlights through my dark brown/black hair. The stylist wouldn't go with a brown because she said it would turn red. She ended up using an ash brown and instead of a tiny bit of highlights she practically bleached my head ash blonde. It came out terrible, and my hair actually looked grey! I was seriously shaking driving home. My parents just looked at me and shook their head, they agreed it looked grey. I called her back and asked what she could do to get rid of the highlights. She told me to come back and she would tone them out. Now my hair is somewhat back to normal, although around the mid-part I have blondish-red roots. On top of that my hair feels like wires or straw. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to treat this dye job gone bad? My hair is already curly/wavy/thick and now it's condition is horrible. I don't want to lose my hair i've been growing for a year and a half!!! Please help!!!

I'm an asian guy that decided to grow out my hair long because I was bored of the same old "one and a half inch" hair-cut. I've been growing out my hair; it's been about five or six months now and the hairs on the very bottom portion of the back of my head are about three and half inches long now (They normally would be completely shaved, right?). My problem is that I have hair that has an annoying tendency to flair out to the sides. Okay, I can accept that because I figure I can contain it in a pony tail once it's long enough. But I started noticing that some of the hairs in the back are wirey, coarse and wiggly....Is this because this is the first time I've let my hair back there grow out in my life and my scalp is desperately trying to encourage hair growth? Will they eventually calm down after a year or two?
Oh, and my hair type is wavy/straight and dry. I hate it.

Help me out anyone?

anyways, ive noticed this over the past month or so.
when i shower, doesnt matter if i use shampoo, conditioner, both, or just water, when it dries my scalp itches profusly. i part my hair in the middle and my scalp is pretty much white and its doing alot more than flaking. all on my scalp from my hairline and sides all the way to the back...this white flaking crap sometimes crawls on my forehead. it cant be dandruff...never really had it before, and this is just alot of stuff. what is it? what should i do?

I just started growing my hair out in November and want to get the look from the characters from Lord of the Rings. But my problem is that my hair is very straight and I want it to be curly. Does anyone out there know how I can make my hair curly?

I just want to share something with you. My hair is currently under the (very) awkward stage and there are days when my hair looks good and there are days (most of them) when my hair is somewhere between ridiculous and terribly ugly. Anyway, i just cameback from visiting some family of mine, whom i hadn't seen for some years. Of course i wanted to look good, after all this would be the first time in years that i would see that part of my family again, so what to do? Endure the awkward stage and not cut my hair? Of course, that goes without saying. So there i was, in Miami, one of the most shallow and superficial cities in the world, and for some reason, maybe the gods testing me, when i got there my hair looked so so SO bad. It was drier and wavier than ever and it looked like every hair i have was sticking out in all directions. I don't remember my hair ever looking that bad. It really looked BAD. And of course, everyone kept telling me to cut my hair, you look bad, only girls have long hair, you would look much better with short hair, no one here has long hair, etc. etc., you know what i mean. And to be honest i felt very very tempted to cut my hair because i really looked bad and i almost did it. But to make a long story short, i thought it over and ended up not cutting my hair, everyone accepted that i wasn't going to cut it, as much as they wanted me to and guess what, during the last days i was there and specially now that i am back home, my hair never looked so good and pretty and manageable. For the first time i can actually say that i have pretty hair and am very pleased with it. I am very very happy that i didn't cut it. So for all of you out there that are thinking about cutting your hair, take a few time to think it over, wait and only do it if you really feel that it is the best thing for you. I know i would be feeling terrible and devastated if i had cut my hair during those moments of weekness. I am very happy with myself and can't wait to have long hair.
By the way, one of the things that i did and i think helped me a lot was stop using shampoo, like some of you in this board. For the past two weeks i used only conditioner in the shower and leave in conditioner. No shampoo at all, and so far i don't need it and i'm thinking about using it again (unless something yucky falls on my hair of course). If you have dry hair like me don't be afraid to stop using shampoo, your hair won't smell bad. The conditioner is more than enough to make your hair smell good and my hair never looked healthier before, so give it a try. I still have a long way to go and i am still enduring the very painful awkward stage but for now i am feeling very happy with the results.

Wear a skull cap, when shoveling snow for 5+ hours. Works for me.

I had an undercut and i'm starting over now from a buzzcut, i haven't cut it in about one month. But should I be trimming way back of my head/upper neck area? And what about the hair coming down over my sideburns? I'm afraid to go to a stylist and tell them to simply shave the back of my neck where there are a few hairs because we all know how most people at hair salons are. Should I just let it all grow?

I just saw the movie "The Doors" last night. In a scene where the band is getting ready for their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, the show's hairstylist starts saying stuff like "what are we going to do with your hair?" to Jim Morrison(Val Kilmer) and basicly hinting that he should cut it. Morrison's reply was "some of the biggest mistakes of my life have been haircuts."

Does anyone on this board use wild boar hair brushes? I recieved one for Christmas, and it is the best. It is wooden with 100% real wild boar hair. It makes you hair really silky smooth, and shiny. I would also advise you to get yourself. If you already have one, give responses in your experiences.

Can cornrows damage your hair?

I dont wanna grow it to long but my hair grows straight out in all directions, and I herd there was a gel that if used daily it will make your hair grow a certain direction???

I've been growing out my hair for about a year now, and have cut it probably four times all last year, just to maintain it a little bit. Right now its about to the length of my nose, and by next year I want it shoulder length for soccer season. Is there any shampoos or other techniques that will make my hair grow faster.

thought I would share with you my experience of hair in bunches. My wife suggested it and have worn my hair since Christmas day in bunches. Great fun and a good reaction from people (those that commented).
Decided to return to work with my bunches and hope the reaction is okay. Some of the girls in the office wear their hair so why not! Wondered if anyone has had similar experience and also I'm finding I need to redo it after a few hours - is this right.

What do i do if i have split ends or hairs longer than others sticking up. I usually go to the barber shop and get them to trim my hair but a few weeks later is back the same way. And if i dont get a trim it will be lookin all messed up. WHAT DO I DO?

I'm 17 and used to have long hair. I wanted to regrow it and have hair down my back. My dad wouldn't let me, so I tried to compromise by showing him a sequence from the video game "Metal Gear Solid 2" of a character named Raiden. Seeing Raiden's hair wasn't too long, my dad finally agreed.

Now the question: If I'm going to grow it out, how do I get the same shape that Raiden has? It won't work if I just grow it out without any cuts at all, and if I did get it cut, I'm not sure the stylist would understand how I want the shape to be. So...what exactly do I do?

Apparently, there are things such as 'mullet witch hunts' and 'mullet fever' etc etc because I hear people on this board talking about the fuss on having mullets or being mistaken for a mullet all the time... I've entered the Battle stage with my wife. Up until now it was "your hair is getting pretty long - you should get a hair cut" Know it is just long enough to feather over the ears a little, 3 inches or so. I did just go to the hair salon - same as my wife's. The guy I saw was incredibly supportive. He asked how long I wish to grow it, and laughed as I responded "I'll never know if I keep getting it cut!" His advice matched what is said on this site. You have to not cut your hair and let it grow long enough to have its own length or weight keep it under control. He said it will probable be this time next year before it is long enough to decide how long is long.

Any advice you all have over the "battle with the wife" let me know.

Hey! I've had a beard for a number of years, but have never let it get too long (past 1/2") cuz things tend to stick in it....fuz from blankets and jackets. Having been a short-back-and-sides man for the past 64 years or so, and having now retired from business, I have been growing my hair out for the past 12 months.

Without exception, my friends and neighbours (I have no family) have nothing but negative comment and remarks to make in connection with this! Not that it has anything to do with this subject other than affecting my overall appearance, but I also wear kilts, Utilikilts and men's skirts every day - I have not worn trousers or shorts for just over two and a half years.

Hi, I need adviec on how to dry hair after you wash it. I have thin/fine hair. my hair line goes back kinda far im 21 it's kinda receeding if i let it air dry it looks really thin and limp...and greasy...the way i usually dry it is i wash it then towel dry it for a few min then i comb it back..and lay a towel on my head and leave it there for 30-45 min theni take it offf and my hair is still slicked back..but flattened knida from the towel and then i jut leave it back like that until the next day i wash my hair at ngiht..cn this cause my hair to thing? or is this a ok method?

If one doesn't shampoo often and allows the hair's natural oils to build up will those oils when coming in contact with the skin, especially on the forehead, cause breakouts? It seems like a person prone to breakouts simply cannot have oily hair if they don't want to breakout with acne?

I've been going without a hair cut now for almost six months. I started out with a layered (longer on the top, short on the sides) cut. Now it's to the really-bother-me stage where hair spray doesn't seem to keep my bangs out of my face but no hair spray obviously doesn't work either. Any suggestions on that? Also, is it necessary to get maintenance cut(s) due to the fact I started with layered hair?

The subject of this post is really what's on my mind. Right now I am an overweight full-bearded guy. My wife thinks that overweight guys can't grow their hair long. Now, I am on a program trying to lose weight, but let's say I don't--do you know any guys that might match this description and who look okay with long hair (it's really thick, btw)?

Ok people my progress so far using Anabolic Liquid Amino Acid Concentrate is this. Every time I use it, I feel a circulation in my scalp, like the hair sac in the scalp acutally stimulating hair growth.
Second, If anyone uses Nioxin conditioners, throw them away because using Anabolic Liquid Amino Acid Concentrate works much better than Nioxin conditioner products in the long run. Every day I use the concentrate my hair becomes stronger, but I havent noticed it curing dry ends yet its been only 6 days since I used it.
I will post another messange in 6 weeks and tell everyone if I notice more results about the concentrate.

I have started to grow my hair for couples months or so. It looks really crazy. The hair on top of my ears is growing outwardm. Same thing on the back. I have to wear a cap, So I dont look like a junkie. The hair does look like it has a frizz and dryness. Should I get it a little trimmed on top of my ears, so it doesnt look crazy or so? Any tips on the dryness and frizz problem would be helpful.

I've had long slightly-wavy hair for about six years now, and I've never been able to handle the tufts or wings that come from the sides of my do. I get these 1/2 - 2 inch strands that curl and don't pull back behind my ears and look kind of silly. I try to tuck them under the longer hairs but that never seems to last very long. Any suggestions on ways to flatten these hairs down, besides gel?

Hey, guys. I'm having a little trouble here... You see, my hair is decently long now, the hair in the back slightly touches my shoulders and my bangs can easily reach the bottom of my chin without my pulling... Now the, question is: is there such thing as too much hair? Because, honestly, I think I have too much hair and that's REALLY bad combined with dryness and frizziness (if that's a word).... I can't comb it into a style, a ponytail works, but I'd like it more if I can let my hair down sometimes... Maybe the dryness and frizziness came from my history of using wax... So... Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I've been growing my hair for the past 9 months. It's finally starting to look really cool. I can now fit my hair into a decent looking ponytail. My bangs hang down to my lower lip with out me stretching it. I got a trim about a month ago, which was an excellent decesion. I have to go and get another trim in January. I eventually want to have my hair all one length down to my shoulders. My stylist said that I should be at that length by August because my hair grows really, really fast. Hi guys, I have naturally wavy hair. There is one big problem however, my hair does not start wavy until it reaches the ends. So basically, my hair is straight from the roots and turns really wavy at the ends. Therefore, the ends get big. Do you have any tips on getting more volume on the roots? Because I think that could help my problem. I have tried blow-drying my hair upside down but that does not help. It just makes it bigger. Would scrunching my hair with gel help? If so, what is the proper way to scrunch hair? Thank you for your input.

Although I rarely see the Maury show, I happened to catch the end of a show about cutting floor length hair. Nearly all the featured haircuts were for women. However, the last person was a man who was cutting his four foot long hair because his nine year old daughter was embarrassed of him. His wife was not very happy to see him cut his hair, but he did anyway.

Why is it that it seems the only acceptable "makeover" for a man with long hair is to cut it off? Has anyone ever seen a show like this, where the solution was not to cut off all of a man's hair, but to style it? Also, has anyone else felt a need to cut his hair due to a similar reason?

Well, I can't believe this, but I'm getting to 7 months without any cutting or trimming. Althought, I have a question, my mother is pressing for some "fixing" on the back, but that would go against my own rule of no trims at all till March. I have postponed my relaxing, until I see it has length to tuck my bangs behind my ears, meanwhile I'll just try to enjoy my huge afro. Besides, after my november color mess, I now decided to keep my new color, just a little bit blonder than my original color, and got the roots retouched today for Christmas. I hope I make, it, it is going pretty fast, good luck and please advice on my mom's issue. Keep growing.

For 10 months I heard comments about my hair length. Now, everyone knows it is going to be long and not trimmed in the near future and all is quiet. Oh, yes, I get the odd ribbing but most people really love it. I am 53. Went to a party last weekend and this guy was there older than me, I think, and he had hair halfway down his back and he could take his hair and tie it in a knott. I didn't get to talk to him but it looks like he has had long hair for a very long time. Don't give up guys, it is well worth the trouble. What is neat is I cycle to work and shower and my hair is combed straight back. As the hair drys at work in the morning, it dries out to a full body of hair! What is the best part so far? Not putting shit in my hair. I put all sorts of "glue" in my hair for 11 months and
now I just wash, comb back wet behind the ears and wear it. That is truly the very best part. Prior to this I was a shaved head so again no shit in my hair.

For 5 months (I think, maybe 6) Ive been growing my hair. Im 16 which makes it pretty difficult because everyone hates anything slightly different, but all my life Ive wanted long hair and now Ive finally got the guts to do it. At the moment its pretty thick but its moving past the big stage. It covers my ears if I pull it forward and I look like a 70's throwback, which is great. But does anyone have any general advice. And how much longer will it take until it finally becomes long (I mean covering the neck, touching the shoulders and having to push my fringe behind my ears)? If you didn't ready my post "highlights are bad" then i'll go through my situation again. Basically i got bad highlights had them toned out to my natural colour now i have blondish red roots with dark brown hair. The last 3 weeks I followed the shampoo your hair once a week rule and didn't even do the cream rinse(used a shower cap). My hair was in the best condition ever but now I don't know if I can continue doing this because I just had about 3 bottles of peroxide dumped over my hair. What should I do in terms of washing? Should I just cut my hair short since the bleached roots will take 2 years to grow out. My hair looks brassy orange(the roots) and I want my old hair back. Please help, I'm freakin' out here!

Hi, I used a chemical relaxer a while ago, but my hair isn't long enough to warrant using much of the bottle. It worked fairly well, but the package warns not to reuse. I don't really see the problem with it. The package makes some allusion about the stuff being exposed to oxygen, thus making it useless. However, the bottle wasn't even tightly sealed or anything...oxygen must have gotten to it before I ever used it. Can you re-use chemical relaxers on new growth or should you always buy new stuff? It seems to be a waste.

Hi guys, I have really wavy hair and it is awful. It is also really annoying. The hair I have on my scalp is straight but then it really sticks out at the ends cuz the bottom is so wavy. What can I do to increase volume on the whole length of my hair? If I use gel, what hand motions can I do to increase volume? Blowing my hair doesn't work, it just makes it look like an afro. And straightening it just makes it stick out even more. I would really appreciate it if you could reply. Thanks a lot.

The constant (and increasing!) hair-related annoyances i've been experiencing have forced me into finally posting. I should have said something earlier, considering i have lurked here for about a year, regularly reading the posts, but...what can i say, i'm lazy. So here's some info about me, my hair, etc. I am a 19 year old univ student in the US, and within a matter of days my hair will reach its 19-month "birthday." Thank goodness you guys have usually recommended against "maintenance cuts" as being rather counterproductive (and generally counterintuitive!) or else i might have given in and gotten a trim or two...but i have not. No undercuts or anything of that nature - my hair is generally the same length all over my head, meaning that (of course) the hair on the back of my head hangs down past my shoulderblades whereas my bangs ("fringe") hang about several inches below my chin.
Long story short - my hair is a "dirty" blond color (probably will just get darker as winter arrives and as i get older!) and generally straight, although as it gets longer, it gets a tiny bit wavier at the ends. I'd estimate the length at approx 11 inches when pulled straight, although i shall have to double-check this once i get a measuring tool in my possession! I guess you could say my rate of growth is slightly greater than normal, .5"+ a month, but noticeable growth has obviously seemed to slow seeing that my hair is considerably longer than it's ever been!
I would have to say i like Bill C.'s idea of a "born longhair" in explaining why i'm trying to grow out my hair. Still, i had suspicious circumstances which may have aggravated things a bit: most of the musicians (mainly in the metal genre) i've admired have/had long hair. Secondly, and unfortunately, i went to a private grade school and a private high school, meaning that i spent about 7 years of my life wanting long hair...but i had to keep it at the same annoying, short length. So I'm obviously thankful for finally getting a 4-year window of opportunity now to have relative freedom with my hair.
Yet i still have some more complaining! My main problem now, besides being in what i consider to be in the generally awkward stage of "not QUITE having what i'd consider as truly long hair," is this: i have some surprisingly dry spots on my scalp that get easily irritated and often flake what is presumably dead flakes of skin. This is damned unsightly to me. Add to this the fact that my hair itself is not at all dry or brittle - i cannot go for more than a few days without a washing, for my hair would feel oily to the extent that i'd call it "greasy." It's an interesting combination.
These somewhat itchy, irritable spots are most notably at the front-center of my scalp, where i part my hair - not very convenient, since i always become self-conscious that some flakes will be visible in my part. It's difficult to comb out these flakes or to simply brush them away with my fingers because many times they just get moved around on my hair rather than removed completely.
I would imagine there's a difference between dry, dead skin and dandruff, but would dandruff shampoo help at all? I think it would be even MORE abrasive to these sensitive areas of skin. In fact, i'm hesitant about shampoos in general, as their job seems to be removing oil and other moisture from the hair/scalp, so now i normally use a heavily diluted shampoo (Herbal Essences Replenisher for dry hair, mixed with plenty of water) anyway. Would it be helpful to use skin moisturizers such as baby oil or lotion right after i finish washing, so this skin doesn't dry out?
I try diligently to find the right personal hair care "policy," but i still don't feel i've gotten it right. Generally i seem to shampoo every 2-4 days, depending on how itchy my head is.
Can't really think of anything more to say, except that you guys have already helped me out with that two-week rule - sometimes a series of bad hair days can really kill a guy's morale! I just hope somebody around here can give a bit of advice on my current problem, as i feel rather self-conscious that someone will see some flakes on my head. I know this isn't a life-or death problem, but i would really like to be able to solve it and get back a little confidence! Still, rest assured that i shall not be pressured into cutting/trimming - i realize i've come too far to sacrifice valuable months of growth!
Damn, this was rather long. Hopefully it wasn't too convoluted. Now that i've taken the first step and posted, it shall be much easier to post again and again! Beware! :)

We have been having exams now these last few days of school before the holidays. So we have been going to lunch at different times than normal. Well today I had exams in a class upstairs so I was later getting to lunch than normal. When I was getting my napkins and a fork I already heard somebody call me "mullet man". Then when I sat down I pretty much got attacked. Not physically but verbally and mentally. The tables are joined together so I was sitting with my friend but the people at the end started to me right away. First they said I looked like a girl. Then I started calling me gay because my hair. THey just kept on the whole time. I tried to ignnore them but they still got to me. I had to restrain from throwing my spaghetti at the f***ing faces (sorry for language, I'm pissed off) But If I was to do something stupid now I would fail all my classes by missing the exams so they weren't worth it. But I also heard other people at other tables saying stuff about my hair. Although I don't know what exactly. But all of them were people my age and in the same grade that I've known. Most of the upper classmen leave me alone. I am determined to hunt down the one boy that made the most fun of me after Christmas and beat his A$$. I like my hair and I don't think I look like a girl nor do I have a mullet (people obviously don't know what a mullet is) But I can guess that this is only the beginning of it all. Once my hair gets truly long it will probably get worse. Also growing my hair long is only the first thing of changing my appearence. Just like I've always wanted long hair I've always wanted earrings. But now I was to get both ears pierced I can only imagine the amount of putdowns I'd recieve. But I still plan on doing it. Today is probably the worsest day so far this school year. Usually I only get one or two remarks about my hair. Why do I have to go thru so much hell??? Even my family doesn't hesitate to make remarks. Just the other day my grandpa said he'd give my $5 to go get my haircut. I bet the two kids at Columbine were probably growing their hair out and couldn't take the remarks so you know what they did. That is the type of thing that I feel like doing when I have people like the ones in the lunchroom today. But I'm not throwing my future away for them. But I'm already looking forward to school reunions in the future. Where see who goes furthest in life. ME!!!!

My friend is braiding my hair friday afternoon(for free) and I was just wondering if I should wash it while its braided. If so with what? just shampoo? conditioner? both? thanks

I am almost to the ponytail stage but not quite there. My bangs stay behind my ears but I can't quite get them into the ponytail. So... I still use mousse. It is ALCOHOL FREE mousse which supposedly won't dry your hair. Does anyone see a problem with this until my hair reaches the ponytail? I don't use hairspray or gel or anything else. My hair is currently very healthy. Comments?

I know I never cut my chest hair, and it hasn't grown to a braid-able length. Does head hair work the same way? Can it get to a point and just stop?

I have really thick hair and and it grows out like an afro....really puffy!!! Is there anything I can do to make it fall down?? Will getting it thinned help at all?????? I'd appreciate some help....Thanks!!!

I've found that half of winning the battle when it comes to styling is knowing how everything works in a scientific sense. I've tried looking on the web for some explanations of what exactly happens when you apply conditioner to hair, but I haven't found anything useful.

Well, for those of us who have wavy/curly/in between hair ( damn genetics, damn it straight to afganistan )...is it even worth having long hair?

I am growing out my hair, but it is very dry, and in between curly and wavy...and the only time my hair looks decent is when it is wet. As soon as it dries out, it puffs out and just looks horrid. Any other curly long haired folks here with this type of issue? What did you do to fix it? Or did you just go with the short cut that curly hair deserves?

I've been giving my hair weekly oil treatments (with regular olive oil) for a while now, but lately it's been giving me trouble. Last night i had to wash my hair 3 times before it was out - well, actually, more like before i thought it was out. Is there any sure-fire way to know when it's all out?

And also last night, i noticed an unusually high number of hairs that came out in the shower. Should i be worried about 80+ hairs? I'm too young to be going bald, and not particularly stressed or anything...

And one last question - broken hairs! ya know those lil hairs that stick up in wildly crazy frizzles. I have waaaaay too many! i don't know how i got them...the only thing i could think of is swimming at the beach a lot during the summer? by a lot i mean 2-6 hours a day, every day. Other than that i'm pretty gantle with my hair - i only comb it once a day, i use my fingers instead of a brush, never comb it harshly or when it's wet, or anything like that. Until they either fall out or grow out, what can i do to hide them? i don't wanna be mr. frizzi head anymore!

Can someone, anyone tell me if there are any products that can increase hair growth because i chopped my hair short when i went back to school which was a stupid idea because i had it in a ponytail over the summer. Right now the front of my hair reaches my eyes and i grew the parts most people shave under at which is now covering half of my neck. Another question is does hair actually grow faster in the warm weather?

I recently put in a thread about my poofy hair and the long hair i wanted. This saturday, i got my hair thinned out, and I got my layers blended together (i used to have the haircut that was long on top and short on the sides). I got a conditioner (Tresumme Intense Moisturising, good move?)and a firm hold gel, that doesnt make my hair all crunchy and stiff. So here is my Q: what do I do now????

I may have found a product that may grow hair faster if applied to hair and scalp. Its called Anabolic Liquid Amino Acid Concentrate Amino Fuel. 3 Tablespoonfuls=14 grams of protein and has 22 amino acids that weight lifters use. 3 amino acids that help hair grow is L-Cystine, L-Methionine, and L-Tyrosine. I hope this is the answer to accelerated hair growth. Here and there I see messages in which people say that their long hair attracts the "you look like a girl" comment.
Well, it's cool if u stay the way u r but some of u may consider growing french beard or goatee or smthg like that.
I have french beard(and now I'm growing my hair) and I love the way the beard looks and it should really go nicely with long hair.
So, mayb french beard will look good on u 2 and at the same help u get rid of those comments.(let me emphasize, I'm not saying u should give up to such comments, just a suggestion to help u build up ur look AND help u get of rid of them)

Cab someone tell me why blowdrying is bad? I blowdry my hair everyday with a gentle blowdrier, not too hot, and I don't see a problem. There are a few split ends; not too many. I think shampooing everyday is much worse because it removes the oils your hair needs. I shampoo my hair on Monday and Friday, but condition everyday. The natural oils really helps in dealing with tangles.

I'm 17 years old, and I used to have long hair until November 5th, 2001. I had grown it up to 17 months before cutting it. I cut it because my mom encouraged me to, the hair made me uncomfortable, it didn't grow out exactly the way I had liked, and people told me I looked like a girl. However, I've been considering regrowing my hair. But first, I want to make sure I'm making the right choice.

I was with my hair cut at first, but I began to miss it later on. I've wanted long hair since I was about 12 years old. However, there are a few things that are making me think twice about regrowing it. First and foremost, my mom would be unhappy with my long hair. When I told her I wanted to regrow it, she said that I was better-looking with short hair, that she wanted me to look like a BOY, and she was afraid homosexuals would approach me when I'm away at college. But mainly, I'm afraid of her disapproval. I can take the comments from others, as I've already taken them before.

The second problem is how I should regrow it. I have wavy hair, and grew it out without any trims last time. When it was long, I grew it out to about shoulder length in the back while the hair around my face reached my jawline. With my hair down, tit didn't look particulary good OR even, so I tied the hair around the sides of my head back into a ponytail. (The bangs were still a little too short to reach the back.) This time around, I want my hair to be even as I'm growing it out. I don't want my hair to look ratty for the next 2 years. Therefore, I plan to get it evened out at the barber once every 3 months. (I suppose that should be about 1.5 inches each time before I trim it.) However, I want my bangs to be shorter than the sides and back. I don't want people to tell me I've got a mullet, but I want to keep my hair out of my eyes. But what I want to ask is, "How often should I trim my hair? Is every 3 months a good number, and what do I tell the barber so that she won't cut my hair short?" Remember, I want the hair above my eyes to be shorter, maybe down to just above my eyebrows. Sorry, I just came up with a couple of more questions: "Should I even do this?" and "Do you have any hair style/length suggestions for me? (Look at my picture above.)"

My hair is too thick and I have wavy hair. not curly or either straight.. in the middle.. and Ive allways liked long straight hair, and I ve been noticing that the reason why sometimes I cant control my hair or not be the way i want it to be is because my hair has too much volume.. which makes it too thick.. is there anything I can do.. maybe like a homemade product or something that can reduce the volume of my hair?

Hi. I've just started to try to grow my hair long, haven't had it cut for about 4 months, and my hair's just starting to reach my eyes =p
Anyway, having always had short hair before this, I've never really bothered with the condition of my hair much, and never never used conditioner before. I just usually use a shampoo which has conditioner in it all in one. I'm guessing this is probably not the best way to go... Do I have to use conditioner at all, or is it essential?

I have 10 months growing my hair and its been going pretty well.. the bad stage you guys talk about didnt affect me that much. but I have a question, can someone please tell me how to straight the back of my hair? cause my hair isnt curly or either straight.. its like in the middle.. and I dont have much problem controlling the front or the sides, but the back shoulder hanging part gets very curly sometimes.. so any tips?

Well its been 2 years todays since my last haircut. Never thought I'd make it to this point. I have to say the suggestions, support, and advise from this board helped me tremendously, especially during the awkward stage
My hair is now about 14.5" and a little past my shoulders, and I can tie a nice 8" pony tail. I believe biotin and fo ti have helped me in my growth rate and maybe prevented any futher thinning ( I'm in my 40's). I wish I had thick straight hair but I don't and I have to accept that and deal with the very fine, kinda wavy hair I have. One question I have is with hair as fine as mine I know I get alot of breakeage no matter how careful I am with it. I want to grow it to its terminal length, but I'm afraid I may be getting close to it. Just wondering if anyone else with real fine hair has been able to reach mid-back or longer? Any tips to help me get there.. Thanks to all.

Well...I haven't had a haircut in one full year. I've been mostly wearing my hair in a topside pony tail, letting the lower back loose. Once in a while, I'll get a full ponytail, but I have to do it when it's wet, or it won't stay. My hair is very very thick and wavy. I have found, however, that after a good 5 to 6 hours of wearing it in a tail, it straightens and softens nicely.

This is the length of my hair 2 years and 4 months since my last haircut. I did not intend to grow my hair out. I just never went to get it cut. Now I think I'll grow it until it stops. I consider this length to be shoulder-blade length. Some people might consider hair this long as being mid-back length. I think hair this long needs to be three inches longer to be considered at mid-back length. By the way, this picture was taken at work by a female co-worker. My hair is actually short compared to some of the other guys I work with. No, I don't work at a computer company.

Hey people I have been growing my hair out from a millitary flat top hair cut to long hair grown from a millitary flat top for 1 year 8 months now.
I have recently discovered a new hair growth product named Long 'N' Strong Extra. It claims results are seen in 5-7 days. Question people is does anyone ever use the product Long 'N' Strong Extra? If anyone does use it have you seen results using the product?

I have had sideburns sinse i was 15 and i am very proud of my thick set, they are grown right down to the ear lobe, mutton chops are the best brand so get growing!

The issue here does not appear to be LONG hair (styles, unlike length, can be changed when the school day ends), but we obviously keep an eye on such cases as the distinctions between styles and length are lost on some people who come up with policies.

Why do you guys want everyone to have long hair? I have seen a few posts with people complaining about why most others have short hair, and there's also the posts here with people wanting the long hair look to take over (models in magazines, movie stars etc.) I am very happy being one of the few with long hair (I am 16 so about 99% of people my age esp. at my school are trying to be all trendy and most have spiked hair) It almost makes it feel like a privelage for me to have long hair (not fully long yet but it's getting there) BTW. If this sounds like I am insulting you guys, I am most definitely NOT, i'm just wondering.

Ok, so I've heard great things about Aussie Moist conditioner. What I want to know now is if the companion shampoo also comes as highly recommended.

(I am not a longhaired guy, I'm a female who has been lurking here for quite some time.)

My school's ice hockey team went on a trip to Canada last week. There's a boy on the team who had this great bouncy blond hair (technically in the awkward stage, but it looked fine).. on the trip, some of his team mates held him down and cut it off. He didn't even come to school today because he's traumatized (and looks pretty bad--well, I haven't seen it yet, but it's got to be awful.) Our band director thinks he should take them to court, and I do too. :p

Why would anyone do something like this? My theory is that they were all jealous of his hair. :p

Aside from the fact that it's abuse and should never have happened.. I'm extra mad because this leaves the band with only *one* long-haired guy.. *grumbles*

It always makes me feel good when I see a guy with really long hair who also has a good job. It happened again just the other day when I met a guy (probably about 35 - 40 years old) who has a good job in the medical field. He also happens to have beautiful dark waist-length hair that he wears in a ponytail. God, was I envious. I couldn't stop looking at him and wishing I had hair like his. I wanted to approach him and tell him how much I admired his hair, but I didn't have the nerve.
I just hope he knows that there are people who really do admire his hair, even if we don't come right out and say it.

I am seriously thinking about getting this cut. Any opinions.

I keep seeing things about avoiding and trimming split ends but if my hair is growing from my scalp why does it matter? Is it just a matter of hair health or will it hinder growth...?

This my first post here though I have been lurking for several months.

One question I've had bouncing through my skull is, now that I've decided to grow my hair long (3 months and counting with no cuts or trims), I've been looking in the mirror - at my head, not my hair. Do you guys think that there are some cases where the shape or contour of someone's head just does NOT lend itself to long hair? Or would you say that ANYONE with long hair is better than the same with short hair? Because I really want long hair, but I've heard from some people that you have to "have the right kind of head for it." Right now I'm going to go ahead and let it go, and then look at it when it's long and see what I think. Does anyone have any opinions? Or advice? Thanks in advance if you do.

Just as a point of interest: I was flipping through a JC Penny circular that came with the Sunday newspaper, and one of the male models had blond shoulder-length hair. It was so refreshing after seeing nothing but crew-cut types for so long.

One year ago today I got my last haircut. I actually began growing my hair out in October of 2000, but I got one last little trim on Dec 10, and none since. I am fairly well past the awkward stage. My hair is shoulder length which I wear in a ponytail to work (I am a teacher). Since the sides do not quite yet reach my shoulders, wearing it down gets messy pretty quickly. I can see that looking and feeling better when all of it will collect back on my shoulders. Anyway, this site has been and continues to be a great source of information and support. my name is nathan and i am 16 years old. currently i live in japan and that is the reason i want to grow my hair out long. you see, all the guys in japan just shag their hair out and never really cut it. when they do get it cut, you can never tell. it is like they try to make it look unkept. in america (wisconsin to be exact) i always kept somewhat short hair, about 2 inches. i livein a really really small town where discrimination amongst long hair men is very high. for exmple we have a teacher at school (hes the best) who had his house vandalized because of his hair. but since im not in america anymore i decided to grow my hair out long because i stand out more with SHORT hair. my hair is blond (natural, i might add), very thick and wavy. right now it is about 3 and a half inches long and i have no idea exactly how to go about doing this. i have a friend from mexico who simply just stopped getting his hair cut and it seems to be working good for him. but like i said, my hair is thick and wavy and it is starting to develop an annoying bigness. i probably shouldnt be so self conscious about it but i just feel weird. so what i would like for any one of you kind folks to do is tell me what the best course of action is. also, can somebody tell me FROM EXPERIENCE, not from a website or a book, how fast hair grows per month. also, is there any type of vitamin or pill that i can take that ACTUALLY WORKS and accellerates hair growth?

Have any of you found a surfeit of longhaired guys among those holding a particular job? In my part of the world I have recently found a large number of autorickshaw (3-wheeler taxi)drivers with long hair. Some have really superb hair. Within 2 days a few weeks ago I came across 3 guys with beatiful braided hair down to their butts.

This may see like a dumb question and i'd never think i'd ask it but...I was playing pool tonight and my friend said my hair is shoulder length. I don't think it is. He said it is because it is touching my shoulders. It's just the very top of my shoulders the hair is barely touching. I thought shoulder length is when the hair completely covers the shoulder blades? Am I right or wrong. Thanks.

 I believe only one other person has described interest similar to mine. I am gay and have a
wonderful partner of 7 years and growing who is looks like a more handsome Kevin Kline with
almost silver greying hair which he wears at about 4 inches because I like it -- he would wear it
shorter -- and he has a delicious moustache. He insists he would like to be feminine, but he would
never make it. Not in the cards, and I am glad. (He was, or they say is, a Marine.)
I think of myself as basically masculine, with zilch interest in cross dressing or being feminine.
However, I have always been envious of women's freedom to "do" their hair, and all my life I
have "done" my hair one way or another. I have had many perms, but they always led to my
cutting my hair shorter than I liked, until I developed the freedom to have the perms set. Then I
could have bigger hair that was not totally out of control.
For a time I let my hair grow and it was well past my shoulders, but the hair at my crown is not
as strong and does not grow as long. My hair is naturally wavy, and pulled back in a pony tail it
looked flat unless it was set, and while I like to have a set in a salon, it was a drag because I had
to do it whether I had time or not. (I have three regular salons which expect to do a set for me.)
Recently, I have evolved into a style which is just right for me and very similar to a picture of
me at age three, except I do not have nor want bangs -- well not exactly.
I part my hair on the left, and it is about 6 inches long. I comb it back and it falls into waves. As
long as I let it dry naturally, it does very well and I do not have to set it except on top where I use
about 8 large medium to roll it away from the part and back over the crown. This creates a lift
away from the part, and it does fall into a curly wave over my forehead.
When I can have it set, and a set will usually last me a maximum of three days, then the waves
fall into place evenly all over and I ask the stylist to use small rollers at the back of my neck so
that the waves break into a sea of curls.
I can set it myself, and it does remarkably well, but I cannot see what I am doing so it is better
with a stylist.
When I was three I was a blond. Now my hair is mousy brown with a very slight grey streak in
front.
On November 2 I asked my stylist to tint my hair gray, but he could not quite believe that I was
serious in my request. He insisted that he knew just what I wanted, and used an ash blond and in
fact it has come out wonderfully. I have gotten only positive responses. He used a foil like
technique, and the streaking is so subtle that if I did not know it was better things through
chemistry I would think it was natural. Five weeks later, and there is no obvious "roots."
I am a professional person and everyone who knows me knows that I "do" my hair. I am also
known as a person of competence with strong opinions, and willing to speak my mind in person
or in op ed pieces in the paper.
I am going to insist at touch up time that we go a little lighter, but with a drabber toner. I want

wants me to do what makes me happy. He could not care less. He cares about other things. I am
as happy as the three year old in the foto. I do not have a feminine hair style, but I surely have an

at the moment i have a skinhead but im considering growing my hair long.i want to know when i grow my hair longer what do i actually ask for at the hairdressers so my hair grows out evenly instead of been longer at the back than at the sides and top. also my hair is real thick what else do i need to ask the hairdresser to do to get my hair even. i want the hair to lie fairly close to my face but this might be diffcult cause of my hair type. if any of you long hair pros have any advice it would be much appreciated

Although my hair is poofy, I find hair moisturizers excellent solution for managing my hair and I recommend for the other people complaining about this problem to try this as well.

To begin, for those out there growing, I agree that you shouldn't get a hair cut if you're growing it all out.
I went to a barber (well, female, salonish, hair stylist) because I'm only growing my bangs out and after 3 months the rest of my head was pretty shaggy, too. So I went and asked her to cut the hair close and not touch the bangs. She did exactly that: a little closer than I might've liked in the back but my bangs aren't a milimeter shorter. Just wanted to balance out the barbershop horror stories.

I think that Kurt Cobain had thick hair. It only looked thin because he allowed it to grease up and stuff. Does anyone agree? Loook at earlier photos. Not the ones when his hair was real long.

Anyways, I just had a trim on the back *shudders* I hate haircuts...
anyways it the first in around 6 months, I have been growing almost a year now. My hair is approaching the stage of putting it behind my ears (I can do it, but it falls out rather quickly, but when it gets about an inch longer or two...) Some of my hair is down to my chin,my bangs are now about an inch or two...I use pantene pro-v frizz something shampoo and conditioner which works fine, I am surprised that I can shampoo daily and have a good hair day. Typically my hair is thick and slightly wavy, but I slick it back in the morning after the shower and let it air dry (about an hour or so now) then I comb it down and its very straight.

How would you describe Kurt Cobains hair? What hair type did he have? thick, thin or what? There are so many different types? The reason I want to know this is because his hair looks decent and I wouldn't mind knowing if mine will fall like that. i have been growing my hair for over 5 years and i have been thinking latly to get it cut short so yesterday i went to the salon but instead of cutting it short I just got about 3 or 4 inches cut off and I cant tell you how much better it looks and feels.....it just goes to show you it you are thinking about getting a short hair cut try cutting alittle at first because once its all gone it takes a long time to get it back.............

Hey, I am glad that I came across these postings.....I was just about to cut my hair and leave it short, like I have always had it. After reading the maojority of these posts, I decided to go ahead and continue to let it grow. I am in that don't know what to think about my hair stage. I tried to grow it long a couple months ago, but ended up getting a haircut. It was just to poofy. Now I have gotten an undercut and the poof has gone virtually away...until I take a shower, then my hair is very poofy until I brush it down or put something in it. My hair looks great gelled, but I don't want to have to use gell from now on. I am using some pomade for keeping my hair down. It works very well. I either take showers before i go to bed, so the oil is replenished. Or shampoo every 2-3 days. I found that rinsing it out with water is pretty effective. As long as my hair is has pomade or natural oils...it looks very nice.
It is about 4-5 inches long. Since I have an undercut, it looks like I have a bowl cut. My hair is somewhat layered from my last cut, so I will keep undercutting for a while until my hair grows past or down to my ears...I figure the weight of the hair will keep it down, so I can grow the underside out. I have fine/thick black hair and so does my father...I saw some pictures of him when he had his hair long, and I liked the way it looked. My friend also decided to grow his hair out and I am sort of doing what he does for hair care, which is working for me.
What are some good Shampoo, Conditioning, and in hair-conditioners?

Does anyone here use the "upside-down" hairdrying technique? I've heard from a couple female friends that it will add volume to your hair. If so, what's the best way to go about it? Let air dry for a while first, before using blowdryer? Thanks.

I am growing my thick hair out. Right now it's about 4 inches and I was told by a barber that in order to get rid of dead ends I should get a trim every 6-8 weeks. I've decided not to thin my hair, but am still debating whether or not to trim just a tiny bit of it like my barber said to do. But all of you'll say I shouldn't and say that just taking good care of my hair will keep it from becoming split. But you'll also say that I should only shampoo and condition once a week. Won't that screw with my hair's health and slow down its growth.

Hello everyone. I have been reading all the comments directed towards shampooing ones hair. My question is: On non-shampoo days should I still get my hair wet and condition or should I wear a shower cap? I still put mousse in my hair to hold it down some and don't want any remnants of the previous days goop. So just rinsing with water seems to get rid of it. Comments?

has anyone noticed that perming hair helps to ease the growing out process? I had mine nice and wavy and because of that extra wave it made growing my hair out much easier...it is not real long...about 6 inches on top and 4 on the sides and back but it is growing....just wondering if anyone has had the same experience?

I was looking around the tlhs messageboard earlier today and found a link that someone had posted to an article from the 1840's about Crow indians. The author seems to be very inpressed by the long hair of the men in the tribe (hey, who wouldn't be?), many of them had hair long enough to drag the ground when they walked, It's pretty interesting, although some of the people on the board did question it's accuracy in some areas.

I'm posing this one as an open question. Is it a "bad" thing to color your hair if you want it to grow really long? I had a freak out about six mo's back and went from brown to blond (it was that, or cut it all off) - HATED it - so I dyed it back to brown about two weeks later. I've let it be since then, until tonight, when I redyed with the brown. I'd say...at least for the short term...my hair seems to be in "better" condition than before coloring - not to mention - you get a really nice "sheen". Anyone here with the Mid back or longer length have any issues with coloring? One thing to note...if you have hair past your shoulders...buy two bottles...or you run out! (not a cool thing when you are in the process!) Anywho, just let me know what you guys think.

I am utterly frustrated with my hairstyle. I used to have longer hair, but since I could not 'control' it, I had it trimmed to what i have now. Even now it' still VERY puffy, and dry. I was wonering what any recommends i should do.

I'm almost debating if I want to go all the way short and not have any length to the hair. My hair is naturally wavy and curly so it's even worse =(

After I could not handle the long hair ( it was WAY TOO poofy and VERY dry ) I decided I would go for the haircut like Johnny Reznick ( main singer of Goo Goo dolls )

Ok, it's no secret that lots of people have been asking the question about whether they should shampoo/condition and how often. I've noticed a wide variety of responses to these questions. On one hand, we have people saying that you shampoo/condition everyday; and on the other hand we have people saying that you should shampoo/condition only once a week or less, not to mention all the responses in between. I know I've offered my advice to some of these questions before, but now I'm going to propose a slightly different approach which should help everyone to figure out what to do. First, you must realize that there is no ONE way that everyone is SUPPOSED to take care of his hair. I say this because that's what people keep asking: what I'm I supposed to do? Well, everyone has different hair; so you're solution isn't necessarily going to be the same as someone else's. So here's what I propose. Try everyone's advice; try both of the extremes and everything in between. For example, you could try each suggestion for about a week or so and then observe what your hair is like. It is inevitable that you will eventually find out which method works best for your particular hair. Once you've found a way that makes your hair feel the best and makes it the most conducive to the style you want, then you've soved your problem. And one more thing. There is nothing wrong with anyone's suggested method. They will not slow your hair growth, and they will not cause you to get split ends. It's really only a matter of scalp moisture and hair manageablity. Sorry about the length of this post, but I hope this helps everyone find what they're looking for.

Well after wondering what to do with my thick hair in my quest to grow my hair long, I've decided on a couple of things. Right now, my hair is relatively short. Only about 4 inches. But this thursday marks the 6 week period since my last trim so I will get just a little bit(extremely small)trimmed to keep my hair nice and healthy. I will do this every 6-8 weeks. Also, from reading lots and lots of advice, I've opted not to thin my hair. Hopefully, when longer, it'll be albe to move around the way I want and look good in either a ponytail or loose. I would love my hair to look like Scott Stapp's(the lead singer of Creed) and in a dream world(the old long hair of tennis player Patrick Rafter) but I guess I'll have to settle for what my thick hair will allow. I will venture over to GNC to pick up some hair vitamins in order to hopefully increase my hair's growth rate so it's more than 1/2 inch per month. Also, I will only shampoo my twice a week, but condition it on a regular basis so my hair is not as big and frizzy. What do you'll think of my plan? Any suggestions for changes?

Does anyone use a curling iron to straighten their hair? I've heard a curling iron can be used that way, and I'm wondering how well it works.

Since there's been alot of questions lately on shampooing/conditioning I'm going to throw my question into the pot. I just started shampooing only once per week, and on the other days I shower, I use Pantene's smooth and sleek conditioner. When my hair dries it's just as frizzy/dry as when I shampoo it, should I be only conditioning once a week too and just using water? Thanks in advance.

Hey, I'm just beggining to grow my hair out to get to shoulders length and right now its all been trimmed and is even about 1/2 past my ears. Should I keep getting trims so that all my hairs from the top of my head reach where my hair is now or continue growing it and let the other hair catch up as I get trims later on?

Can someone please explain the process of hair relaxing? Pros/Cons? I have very thick hair and am attempting to grow it long. Would a procedure such as relaxing help my look and possible make it thinner or freer so my hair can actually blow crazy in the wind. Right now, it doesn't even move when it's windy. Thanks.

I have to shampoo and condition my hair everyday. i dont want to, its just that i shower in the morning and when i wake up the next morning my hair is mated down and clumpy with oil. If i try to just rinse it and not shampoo it as soon as it dries it is matted and clumpy again. I think it may be the fact that i am 16 and puberty has this effect on people but, i dont want to damage my hair. Maybe because my scalp produces so much oil it is okay to shampoo everyday. I dont know, what should i do?

I dyed my hair about a year ago and have been letting it grow out ever since. The part of my hair that is still dyed is kinda dry and damaged. I've noticed that, especially after showering, there's an abundance of knots in dyed part of my hair. I thought that maybe since that part is damaged it is prone to knots because the natural colored part of my hair never gets knotted. I also thought I may need to work on my shower techniques so I'm left with less knots. Does anyone else have this same problem? If so, or even if not, is there anything you could suggest that would reduce the amount of knots in my hair after showering? I would really appreciate it. Thanx.

Well, last friday I went to a salon to ask about what kind or relaxing proceses I could get and I was offered a permanent one that is very mild and "hair friendly". However I think I might be getting ripped off. I was planning to get relaxed about the 7th of this month but I'll wait till January or February and see my afro grow bigger. The stylist said the minumum they charge for the process is 300 dollars and the max for extra length hair is 700. I would get charged 300 because I just have 6 months of hair on me, or 9 if I wait till february. However, do you think its too expensive or does it abide to the standard?

Here are my problems. My hair is super super thick, i cant do anything with it. 2... My hair is "puffy". When I get up in the morning and also later in the day my hair "poofs" out, kinda afro like. It is also very dry too. Now that winter is closing in, the humidity here in Northern KY is gone. I tried to grow in the summer and i was just a puffy mess.... Been growing my hair out for 13 months now, but with a maintenance cut every 3-4 months. (The proportion of my hair is too strange to do otherwise.) Wondering if anybody knows a barber in NYC who's good with long hair (and will believe me when I say that I want to keep the length, but just get the most out of it).

For the people that want straight hair the only solution is HAIR RELAXER. The hair relaxer will depend by the texture of the hair. I recomend for all hair types the MILD HAIR RELAXER because it got more conditioners and less damaging chemicals. You should let it stand in the hair for no more that 10min if you want less damage and it will look more natural. The result will be: for curly hair (it will look a light wavy hair, and thats cool), for the wavy hair (it will look a lot straight), Ive always said that a completly straight hair is B-O-R-I-N-G BORING and life less, but a light wavy hair will look just fine. I have a wavy hair but I will take a step forward and use a mild hair relaxer this way the hair will look longer.
After the hair relaxer ALWAYS ALWAYS !!! use Neutralizer ( it will make a stop to the hair relaxer reaction) and it will protect more the hair. PLEASE NEVER GO MORE THAN 15min when using the hair relaxer it will dry the hair and a couple of weeks will look brittle BELIEVE ME! ( ALWAYS FOLLOW INSTRUCTION from the hair relaxer products, remember it has some chemecals that can damage your hair very easly.

I've read numerous posts on this board of telling claiming that you should only shampoo your hair once a week and just use conditioner wish u take a hot shower. I've been reading this board for a while, but it's the first time I'm posting here. I'm 18 years old, been growing my hair out for 5 months, they are about 6" long...the notorious awkward stage, but I don't mind it a lot :) Recently, I decided to start taking biotin to speed up the whole process. The problem is that biotin is not available in local drugstores (Latvia) :/ so I decided to buy it online, I checked about 20 online drugstores in usa, but there were some problems with all, some didn't want to send to Latvia, some didn't like my creditcard :) in some the stuff was just too expensive...also the postage from usa to latvia takes 2-3 weeks and costs almost the same prace as goods :) so I decided to try to find it in Europe online stores as the postage costs are much smaller and it takes 4-5 days to receive goods. But the only shop offering biotin I've found is www.gnc.co.uk, but it's quite expensive there. So maybe if you know some good on-line stores which sells biotin and are located in Europe, please, post the links here :)

I'm a 15yr old 'mosher' from England. I go to a very posh school where 99% of the boys have a geled quiff. ick. Not wanting to be like everyone else I've been considering long hair for a long time. However, there are a number of problems

1)My hair is ginger
2)My hair is fuzzy
3)My hair is 'wavy'
4)When wind, rain or anything touches my hair, it doesn't flop back into position, it stays where it'd has been moved. It goes below my eyes, but it can still stick straight up without any gel.
5)After extensive straightening with hair dryers, tongs and so on, it goes wavy again about 30 seconds after being in the rain, wind etc

I use conditioner every day, and I follow the instuctions on the bottle. Is my hair crap because I'm going throught the 'inbetween' stages, or am I just crap. Will it get better as it get's longer, and how long should it be before I consider dreading it?

I have wavy, thick and dry hair. Ive tried all groceries products except for the Aussie ( its an Australian product for all hair type) I bought it in Walgreens. I use the MOIST line, with the Aussie Natural Gel. The final touch for a cool hair is the Natural Gel, its a light hold gel that will mantain a steady control for those frizzies but at the sametime you can touch your hair without being sticky. Best of all is ALCOHOL FREE, and NATURAL> NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS (BRAVO!).

I am curious as to when someone's hair develops the appearance that stands out in a crowd due to it's length?

My estimation would be around 9 inches or so. What do you think?

For the most part I have extremely thick hair that's mostly wavy but at the ends of my hair it sort of curls up. Is there anything to do to get rid of these curls because I'm letting my hair grow long, or will they go away when my hair is longer?

What I find interesting about the survey is the age ranges. Long hair has no age barriers.

I'm growing my hair out long but I have extremely thick hair that hardly moves when it's windy. Should I get the barber to thin it every 3 or 4 months to make it lighter so my hair, eventually long hair can actually move around when I shake my hair. That's what I want.

I would love to have my hair flowing nice and long like tennis player Patrick Rafter's did,but I"ll probably have to settle for the look that Creed's singer, Scott Stapp has. But even to get that, I think I might have to thin my hair every 3 or 4 months while growing it out just so that my hair can actually move when I shake my head. The barber I go to said for me to trim it every 6-8 weeks(very little trim) in order to keep it healthy and that I should thin it every 3 to 4 months. Thanks to whoever posted the message on acheiving goals progressively. They said that first they envisioned a caesar, and progressively longer cuts until they had long hair. I still am on the way, thank to this good advice.

That is the question. Currently, I have hair down past my shoulderblades...the problem is, that I used to have it cut about every three months - and had no split ends. I've heard everything from, don't cut it at all till you reach the length you want to...cut each split end off as you see them. Let me just say...I HATE split ends! I don't like the look of a guy with long hair that has split ends all over and it looks like he doesn't take care of it. Granted a "cut em as you see em." takes only three hrs or so...but hey...who has three hours to spare? As a history, I have very thick, brown hair with the classic "hyper curlies" on the backside. Can anyone let me know of a good (no dandruff please) conditioner? It's getting to be too much at this point and I don't think I want to cut it all off...but man...the preppy look is looking more and more attractive. HELP!

I've been growing mine for about a year now. I can almost tie it back, but I seem to be pulling alot out when I wash it. Probably about 10 strands or a few more. I'm only 19 so I shouldn't be going bald yet....Should I?

Just wondering if you'll know any vitamins or other special products that I can use to help my hair grow faster. I always heard hair grows about 1/2 inch per month, but I want mine to grow faster than that. Thanks

Hello all, Ive been a regular visitor to this board, but not posted before.

I have been growing for about a year now, and I am enjoying the progress that I am making. Today I tied my hair back for the first time, and I find it brilliant not having it all in my face all the time now. Still the very front of the bangs are loose but i guess gel or moose can sort that out.

Just one quick question though, about split ends, are the little hairs that stick up from my head classed as split ends or just new hair that is regrowing? I have heard different things in different places.

I was just wondering at what length would you guys classify as long for a man?

my hair is about 8 inches, (if I pull the front bangs down all the way they reach my lips)

This week it's been misbehaving all it can. It used to be fairly straight when I dried it out all combed back. But now it's getting these waves and dips everywhere and looks messy. Any tips or alternate drying/washing techniques I should try out?

It took 11 ten months for the comments to die down. I have gone from shaved head to eleven months of growth. Just last week I quit putting "stuff" in my hair. I wash and comb/brush it out and that is it. To all the othes, hang in there, it is well worth the trouble.

Ok, now I've heard two different opinions on this board. One says that you should rinse with warm water between times when you shampoo, and the other says you should rinse with cold water. So, I'm wondering which one is really the better choice. Presently, I rinse with warm water, condition every other day, and shampoo once every week or so. What's your opinion on the hot vs. cold water issue?

I'm sort of into bodybuilding, and I take protein supplements. I've noticed (I think) that my hair and nails grow faster because of this. Also, my high metabolism lends to faster cell death and has the same effect on growth speed. Can anyone else out there corroberate this? If I'm correct, I might eat even more protein to get my hair long quicker. Thanks.

I have shoulder length hair, which is normally fine but this weekend my friends decided it would be a good idea to try and dreadlock my hair. It went hideously wrong. I managed to remove the tangles but the half tub of dax wax they used is another matter. I cannot get it out of my hair. I have washed it 6 times but it is still as waxy as ever. Any suggestions for removing it please cos i do not want to cut my hair!

Hello. I'm Korean, and am trying to grow in a small beard. I have a few hairs coming out through my chin, and have developed a sort of "peach fuzz" down there, I also have a mustache line staring. My question is that I know that Korean people have a hard time growing full beards, but would I at least be able to grow one like Sylvester Stallone's in Get Carter? That's the type I'm going for. Hello , I have chin-length wavy hair.But they are so dry.Some hair have become unnaturaly dry and very curly when others are straigth and oily. why is that and what should I do? Even when I trim the ends

This is in response to several recent messages from guys commenting their hair was too thin or their hair would not grow as long as they would like....

Most men get a terminal length somewhere between the shoulderblades and the waist. Most men get hair of an average thickness. Men vary on both sides of those norms though. Some get hair longer or thicker than average. They can always trim off or thin out the hair they don't want, though. The problem of not being average crops up for those who get too little.

If I had hair of iron, I'd be on here telling people to use anything on it and it will work great, but that is not my situation. I have fine wavy-to-curly hair that I have had to coax to get it below my shoulderblades. The slightest wind grabs the shortest of my strands and wafts them way up into the air. I know what it's like to have hair appear to stop growing at a one foot length, with most hairs over eight inches split. I also know what it's like to have hair approaching 20 inches with not a split to be found. Let me share what I've found.

First of all, one must learn to celebrate the hair he has. We don't fret over our height if it is a bit off the average, so why fret over our hair? My mane is plenty long to freak out the conservatives, and I'd bet every one of you here who's worried about his hair could say that. A stranger on the street just yesterday smiled, gave me the thumbs up, and said, "Awesome hair, dude!" A mane to my butt I do not have. Longhairs come in many different hair lengths, and hair thicknesses, so accepting yourself is doable. This is an important thing to do if you are going to enjoy being a longhair.

I have been growing my hair for almost a year, just going to the hairdresser twice in that time for a bit of shaping and tidying.

Unfortunately I know of no other longhaired guys with whom I can compare notes or of whom I can ask questions..... and I have a question:

"How do you hold a ponytail in place?"

I have tried tying with a narrow black ribbon and catching with a rubber band, but both simply slide off within a short while, no matter how tight I tie or how many times I wrap the rubber band around the hair. Even with two fixed mirrors I have great difficulty in seeing exactly what I am doing, and feel I need three hands (at least) to accomplish fixing a ponytail!

Oh, and another question:

"Does anyone use a hairnet at night?"

It is the only thing I can think of to stop my hair becoming one tangled mess by morning (which it usually is!).

I posted a link to my site over at the b_zzboard and I'm being told that I'm too old to have long hair. Geez, I'm only 29. I agree if hair gets too thin or receded then it may not look as good but I don't think I'm to that stage yet.

If one has decent hair, why should age have to be a factor in how long it is?

I'm looking for some advice: my bangs (which I'm letting grow to match the length of the rest of my hair) are about chin length now. This means they get in my face a lot but they are too short to put in a ponytail. The only solution I have found thus far is to wear a bandana or a hat - but I hate wearing a hat all the time and I find a bandana uncomfortable after a while (also, I don't look that good in a bandana).

So my question is...what can I do to contain my hair? Is my only option hairspray of some other holding substance? Or is there some sort of braiding trick I could use? Or some other trick? I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had to deal with this :) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I want to know if anyone here has any experience with the drug Accutane. I finished my second course about 2 months ago, and my hair is still very dry. While the hair near the scalp has definitely gone more back to normal, the ends are still very dry. I'm wondering when it will all go back to normal, and I can stop wetting my hair everytime I want to go out and worrying about it getting dry and wide and frizzy if I'm out for too long away from a water source.

This is regarding your opinion on coerced haircuts for convicted criminals in a prison (as opposed to jail).

It is my personal opinion that such a thing as forced haircuts in prison is an abomination. My reasoning is along the same lines I disagree with the death penalty...

If one single person is wrongfully executed, then America goes from some sort of twisted judge to a murderer...alas an ignorant one.

The same should apply to forced haircuts. How can we justify forced haircuts on an innocent man who was wrongfully convicted of a felony, forced to cut his work of 1+ years?

Granted, more often than not, people in prison are actually guilty. But make no mistake about it...someone out there has had this little operation wrongfully performed on them.

I am growing the back of my hair to approx shoulder length (front/sides about nose length) and at the mo it is about level with my chin at the back. But it is really irritating me. When I have just washed my hair, etc... the front and top goes perfectly fine and pretty manageable but at the back, it goes into a sort of fuzzy wedge/block instead of just hanging like normal hair and sort of curls up and to the sides a bit at the back. I am forever straightening it out whenever i see a mirror!!!!!

Does anyone have any advice on how to stop the god damn back keep curling/looking like a wirey mess. Also, will the problem of it curling at the back get better when it grows down to about shoulder length?

I have very thin black hair. It is perfectly straight and I have been unable to train it. If I comb it, it won't stay in place and all I get is static. I want to grow it out and right now it's about 4 or 5 inches right now. I want to give it more fullness, but the only thing that works is hairspray. But that builds up and damages the hair. Once the hair passes 6 inches, it starts to weigh itself down and looks really flat. I want to make my hair thicker so at least it'll be more manageable. How do I that? I don't want to buy a bunch of products or go to a salon. I'm just wondering if there's something I can put in it that'll make it thicker and give it more lift. I don't mean body, I mean making the hairs themselves thicker. My hair gets oily pretty quick so I have to wash it every day. If I use a conditioner, it becomes even more unmanageable because the hairs feel even thinner and looser. I have noticed that if I don't shower, the hair gets thicker due to dirt buildup. It's at that time, that the hair behaves more like I want it to. I can just comb it to how I want, and it stays there unless it's windy. But then it gets even more oily by the end of the day so I have to wash it again. I deally I want my hairs to be thick just from using the right shampoo or product that I pour in my hair. Then I just brush it into place and that's it. Maybe a few sprays of hairspray but nothing else and the only thing that'll mess it up is wind. Does anyone have any ideas?

Has anybody tried the ultra vitamins for hair from GNC. The packaging labels it as a woman's vitamin but the clerk said that males can use it also, it's just that woman are more likely to purchase it than men.

I seem to be at a crossroads right now. I just can't make a decision as to what I should do with my hair. My hair is a little bit longer than shoulder length and I've had it long for nearly 6 years. I don't really want to part with it but I'm wondering if maybe I just don't have the right kind of hair for growing long. My hair is naturally wavy/curly, but not in a good way. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to my hair and it just goes every which way. If I want it to look decent, I either have to blow dry it and straighten it out, or, as is the case about 95% of the time, I just end up putting it back into a tail out of frustration. For once, I just wish I could put a little gel in my hair, comb it and then let it air dry. But that just doesn't seem to work at all with my hair. Any advice? Is it really possible that it's just not meant to be and should I just accept the fact that I don't have the right kind of hair and cut it short?

Ok, I started growing (just) my bangs out maybe mid-july to early september. Anyway, they're getting longish and are /when straight/ at the bottom portion of my eyes. And I really like tbe look of them just hanging straight down but they won't! When my hair dries, they curl to the side and get fluffy.
Is there a way to keep my bangs straight without using gels (yuck) or steaming them?

First time here... *puts on his "I'm a newbie" dunce cap on* Anyway... I've been growing out my hair for about a year and I have a few questions. :) Here's the big list:
1. I'm trying to get my hair into the ponytail style formation... Anyone have a guide for me on how to do it?

I've been growing my hair out for around 4 months. All my life my hair has been full of body. The problem is that causes extremely big hair. Although my hair is straight, it does not fall downward... yet. I'm hoping that eventually it will fall downwards because of the weight of the hair, however, do you suppose there is the possibility that I will always have hair that has remains large and unmanageable, or would it all cascade downwards in a number of months?

Do you think it would look good to have extremely thick hair shoulder length and beyond (hair that would fall widely across the shoulders) or should I get an undercut and let the rest on the top grow out evenly, so it doesn't appear so "big and wide"?

Hi y'all . . . I'm new here, thought I'd post what I've got in my hair . . .
To make a long story short, I retired (I'm 45) last March, got bored, and enrolled in hairdressing school. Got hair 5" below my chin. Well, the head instructor in school has a theory that "There's a color or perm for everybody," and 'sort of' suggested I get one or the other for myself. Hmm . . . went to a hair show in Ft. Worth a month or so ago (really more of a big flea market for manufacturers of hair stuff), and one company had put some blue color on the ends of some models, some with short hair, some with long. Seemed pretty cool to me . . . Went to another one two weeks ago, sat in on a seminar on various ways how to do highlights. The Wella people were peddling sample kits of blue, red, and green temporary hair color, so I bought some, and ended up putting a streak (about 1" square) of bright blue on my left temple. Looks pretty good, if I say so myself. I can comb it straight back into a tail so it's hardly visable, or I can comb a part through it and then into a tail and it shows pretty well, or take the tail out and just let it show. Got lots of compliments on it . . . was in a supermarket last night, wandering the aisles lost in my own little world, and one of the checkers (loudly) says, "That's the first time I've seen anyone go gray and blue at the same time!" I smiled, winked, and she smiled back. I guess she liked it . . . I figure after 45 years, why not? It's decorative, matches my eyes, looks good, and doesn't attempt to hide my gray. Oh yeah . . .
Only thing is I've got a tube of red and another of green I gotta talk someone else into using . . .

I have a question about split ends. I examine the ends of my hair, and I've never once seen a split end on any of the hair on my head. Is it possible that some guys just don't get split ends, in which case it's not necessary to get trims? I don't get my hair trimmed very often and don't want to do any damage by not doing so, but I don't feel the need except when I want to even off the length or cut it a little shorter.

So I guess in short, my question is it absolutely necessary for every guy to get trims to prevent and stop split ends?

For years now I have been catching hell from friends and family for wearing my hair and beard long. I often get dirty looks from complete strangers. I have plans to compile a small booklet that includes pictures and a short biography of famous men throughout the ages who have worn their hair long. Whenever I am criticized because of the way I choose to wear mt hair, I will show people the book. I hope to have many examples of outstanding human beings to share so that I can break the unfounded associations that people make to long hair on men. Some examples that I have in mind so far include Jesus, Moses, any number of saints in the Catholic church, Hippocrates, and Santa Claus. I am choosing these people because they were long haired men and at the same time are the men revered most by the very people who give me a hard time. I hope to create an attitude of tolerance and acceptance for long haired men. I would appreciate any help in this matter. If the men you wish to add wore beards too, that would be all the better, but not neccessary. Thanks.

I wish the word wasn't invented because there is a large percentage of people who think if a guy has long hair he automatically has a mullet. I attend university and haven't been made fun of personally to my face but I do get the passers by who chuckle and whisper under their pathetic breath "mullet". I find walking around down town is worse as people are so sad as to roll down their windows and shout "mullet!" or "get a haircut!". Whoever invented the mullet word, and these "mullet hunter" web pages should be shot. I'm not saying people should go and grow mullets but why can't other people just let people look the way they want to? It's almost like having long hair nowadays is like being a racial minority in a white supremist world. That may sound a bit harsh but this is a rant and I am done.

I'm 29 years old and I've had very short hair all my life. On many recent occaisions, I've attempted to begin growing it. I usually get frustrated and cut it when it starts to look bad (about 2 months). I really want to grow it, but there are always comments from coworkers and acquaintences. How long will I feel like I look horrible? How can I deal with the comments? How can I get used to what I feel is a totally different lifestyle? Hello I shampoo and condition my long hair every day. I do this because if I don't it breaks off and gets split ends. Does everyones hair break off alot? Is there any way to make my hair stronger and less frizzed or prone to split ends? Also is there a better way to put my hair in a tail with out the clothe covered bands cutting into it? Right now my bangs are have reached the bottom my eyes almost to the end of the nose. Does anyone else have this problem? I've seen girls where their hair looks like it seperates into 2 parts naturally. My hair is also not long enough to tie into a ponytail. It is also not long enough to fully tuck behind the ears. I can part the hair but if I'm walking or anything like that the hair just moves back into its normal position, directly in front of my eyes. This becomes a real problem when reading or playing sports. Any suggestions?

Today while I was eating lunch with my friends in the school cafeteria suddenly this boy walks up to me and says: "They told me to tell you that you need to get a haircut." I didn't know the dude so I didn't even think he was talking to me at first. It kinda stunned me too. I asked him who said it but he left. I watched him and he went back over to where a bunch of juniors/seniors were and started talking to them. All of them had short hair. It really made me mad. I all the time have people telling me to get a haircut or that I need one but I usually know them. So it doesn't get to me. But I didn't even know those guys. I don't go up to people that I don't know and tell them that they should grow their hair out or that shirt is ugly (I don't even do that to people I do know). When I got home today I looked in the mirror and saw nothing wrong with my hair. I like my hair. I'm have wavy hair still in the arkward stage but it still looks better than all the shaved heads and bleached heads that are so common at my school. I think there are only 4 people with long hair in my school out of how ever many 1000 there are. There is another boy that I know that rides my bus who evidently is growing his hair out. He has wavy/curly hair in the early stages. But I think his hair looks better than a lot of others but I hear people telling him to get a hair cut or making fun of his hair. So I know it's not just my hair but long hair in general. There are a lot of things I don't like about some people but I keep it to myself unless they ask me about it. Why don't other people do the same??? I feel if that is what they like then let them do it. I like long hair so let me grow it!!!!!!!!

I don't want to play the whining martyr, but can somebody tell me why quite a few people don't like male long hair. I've heard comments like,"If you want long hair then you should become a girl", somewhere along those lines. Sometimes saying long hair is gay. I just need to know why people don't like long, beautiful, well-kept hair swaying in the wind. I know that I will get comments like don't listen to those other people, but what I want to know is why long hair on males is not really liked.

When I first started growing my hair out most of the remarks that were said about it were from people at school. But all of my close friends never did say anything about it. I figured my family would be the same way. I'm still in the awkard stage so I know it doesn't look super good but it still looks better than it did when it was short. But other people don't think so. Last Saturday I went to a wedding and my brother, my mom, and uncle all kinda of double teamed with comments. My brother said it looked it terrible and they said stuff to about it. Last night I had a dream where I gave in to all the comments and got my hair cut but I regreted doing so afterwards. I was glad to find out I still had my hair when I woke up but could that mean something??? I don't care how many people tell me what to do with my hair I'm going to do what I want to do. My hair is better after a deep conditioning treatment, but it might affect my future relaxing plans. its hard to manage at this point, and I simply worsen it with my requiered daily gel. If I would leave it loose, I would get a huge afro, which I like very much, but can't take it to college. So I'm in a big problem with almost 6 months on me, I greatly appreciate suggestions. Hi last night for the first time in well over a yr. i became cleanly shaven..i always keep a beard with a mustache..ive shaved the sides off b4 but always kept the mustache and chin hair but last nite i decided to shave it all off to see how long itll take to grow back..im 21 and i usually keep a thin beard..thin line across my face and usually every few days i have to shave my neck and cheeks and trim it with my trimmer..i hate how it looks now..i already see lil stubble coming in it was around 8pm last nite i did it and its 4 pm now tues. afternoon..u think most of it'll be back by the end of the week?

I checked some Home Improvement stores and a plumbing supply/spa place about water softeners-they can't even get them, and don't know much about them. I never actually asked my relatives if they had one, but I'd be surprised-they're just not big on home improvement.

Anyway, a $300+ appliance is pretty much out of the question for me right now.

About water system quality-I was guessing that if the water company has the funds-they could soften water at the plant by adding a chemical or something. I'm wondering if our water company used to do that, and stopped.

I tried the baking soda-it did seem to have a softening effect. Hair got tangled, but the cool water combing seemed to help that. I'm guessing you don't need what settles at the bottom. After you shake up the solution, it probably alters the quality of the water right there. Isn't baking soda abrasive, though? I'll experiment more.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have tried these products I found.

Just thought I would share an experience that I just had. I pulled my car into the gas station. There were three other guys there already when I pulled in. Two of them had long hair. So when I arrived, that made it three long hairs and one short hair. Talk about a reversal! It was so cool.

I just got my hair cut for the first time in 14 months the other day-nothing complex....just a 5 minute cut. I went in with all my hair pulled back in a ponytail and said just cut my neck hairs. It looks great back in a ponytail now-people noticed the next day and asked did u get your hair cut?

I figure I might wanna get my neck hairs cut again in a month and that I could buzz it myself with all my hair pulled back using clips and then use 2 mirrors so I could see the back of my head. Has anyone tried this?

Lately I decided that I would buy some hair pins. My hair in the front reaches the bottom of my eyes, and it is not possible yet to be able to put it behind my ears, so if I used the pins, then I could move the hair from my face out of my eyes. Do you think this is right? Do I risk ridicule from other classmates for looking unmanly? If I don't do anyting, then my hair just goes right in the front of my face, totally covering my eyes. Any advice?

I am trying to grow my hair out, it's probably 5 1/2 - 6 inches now. My problem is, that instead of being nice and sleak, it is fluffy and kind of mushrooms out on the sides. Also, have bangs in the front that are really long, and i don't want to part my haird down the middle because i look like a douche bag with out being able to put it behind my ears yet. Men wear skirts at a lot of clubs and sometimes at normal functions.
I've worn them a couple of times, but it makes me nervous,but the pleasure outweighs this fear. What do you think? I love a long haired women with a skirt, do women like long haired men with a skirt.

Up until this week I had long hair down almost to the middle of my back. I am 47 and have alway wanted long hair for years but always ended up getting it cut in tha arkward stage but this time I was well on my way to butt length hair...maybe not attractive for a guy pushing 50 but it's what I wanted...and still want.

Well, least Monday I went to the guy who has been cutting my hair for a while...just trimming the ends. In all fairness he has been great in helping me to get to the length I had.

Well...this time he talked me into having an undercut done...said it will make my hair look neater when tied back. I have seen guys with undercuts and they do often look good.

Well...when I got home and looked at it I hated what he had done. It did not look even and seemed shaved higher on one side than the other.

Then I did something really stupid...I tried to fix it with my beard trimmer. I ended up so high up that I really looked awful with my hair tied back and now my hair did not seem to lay right when worn down.

My embarrasment as to what I had done caused me to seek another stylist who suggest I put layers in my hair and cut a couple of inches off...another big mistake.

Next day off to another stylist who suggest evening the hair back agin getting rid of the layers...yet another mistake.

Now my hair was shoulder level but with a wicked flip that I could not get rid of.

Yet to another stylist who when level with the bottom of the ears...no more flip but I hated how it looked...I then had this stylist "just cut it all off".

I am now set back to a buzzed side (to even up the disaster I did on my self trying to even my undercut) with some length on top. I will say that I do look younger and those who have since seen me like the short hair.

I miss my long hair and I want (and will) have it back. I post this to try to warn others not to get caught in the trap I did...this is how you wind up plus you are poorer too from having to pay all the stylists.

Don't get trims...don't get undercuts...don't get coloring...just let your hair grow as nature intended it to.

I now am carrying a small reminder in my wallet as to these warnings...determined that I will again have long hair and will not make the same mistakes I have done in the past.

I have cried over this and haite myself for being so stupid. I hate answering questions as to what happen to my hair. I just want it back.

What's hard water?
Well, does your hair lather up pretty easy the first time? Or does it fail to even on the second or third try? That might be hard water.
Also, when it finally lathers, it probably tries to tangle up in knots.
The shampoo doesn't clean my hair very well, then it just sticks in my hair!
I have this problem here.

But I went to a relatives in a town just south of Lexington, KY, and washed my hair regular with my own regular shampoo.
MOUNTAINS of lather, first try. I don't remember if it tangled, but I don't remember any real problem.
I washed it there several times, and seemed to get consistently better results than here. I'm guessing they had a higher quality water system there.

I figure larger towns/cities might be able to afford that over rural areas.

Does anyone know about this?

Some tips that might help you deal with hard water:
Use as little hot water as possible. Don't freeze yourself, just use enough to keep the 'bite' out of the water, I guess. I think, and from what I've read, heating hard water amplifies it's bad effects on everything (hair, clothes, water heaters, radiators, etc.).
Also, if your hair does tangle, try using those big tooth 'wet' combs while letting the cool water run over it. This seems to help get that shampoo out of there.

Soft water would be simpler though!

Well, here goes my story, we had a holiday down here last friday and a lot of people including me, went to spend the weekend to Acapulco. For this I wanted to dye my hair just for that, however the stylist insisted i using permanent color and the turning me back to natural color with peroxide. I said no, but he talked me into it. I just wanted my light brown hair turned a bit blonde, and they sell in walmart, temporal coloring,(I should have used it), The result was a great looking and huge blonde afro, with very damaged hair, on monday he turned me back to my color (although he hit a bit lighter). The thing is my hair got damaged, more than just little. I have been using intensive conditioners and even got a hair treatment at the salon, but, I really want to recover my fullness, I had great hair, and although the treatment worked a bit Its not yet recovered. I don't want to loose almost 6 months growth. Thank you. I appreciate suggestions.

Yeah I was wondering how much hair grows in a month naturally. Without taking any kind of hair growth pills to speed it up. I was going to try and see when my hair should finally be long.

I am trying to let my hair grow long but every time i go to the barber he sais that i have split ends.This is impossible if you consider that i visit him every 2 months and my hair is 8 cm. I also let my hair dry naturally. Comment on that please... Should i stop going to the same salon?

Today, I got a trim. I went to this awesome hair dresser that my mom goes to and she did a wonderful job. She took two inches off the back so that the front and sides could catch up. She took a quarter of an inch off of the front, o trim the split ends. It looks a lot better now.

this is kind of an odd question, and i dont know how many of you can help me with this. i never had this problem before (i used to have a shaved head) but now my hair is at a grabbing lenght. I often goto heavy metal concerts and get in the pits and everything. i also tend to be very confrontationsl and get into alot of fights. Just as a follow up to my article on purchasing african american hair products, the conditioner was horrible! It was supposed to make my hair soft and smooth but made it wirey and stiff. This conditioner was so bad it would not work up into a lather at all. I then went back to my Pantene smooth and sleek. Also, what a nasty job the pomade did on my hair. It was like trying to get gum out. I could literally hear my hair breaking in the shower. I think I used a half bottle of conditioner. I hate to say this but I feel that ethnic hair products are one big marketing scam. I hope others on this board won't make the same mistakes I have when it comes to buying prouducts. As of today I am offically done buying hair care products. I've tried everything and I will soon be making a post of every product I have in my cupboard and reviews of them to help out fellow longhairs. My advice is to stick with a good shampoo and conditioner; Pantene seems to be the best. Get a leave in conditioner for moisture and tangles; again Pantene. Plus, a gel for flyaways and that's all folks. Don't buy pomade, texturizing cream, moisturizing cream, straightener in a can, etc. Because of these ethnic hair products I have to go to my stylist tommorow because I think I just broke the ends off every piece of hair on my head. Well, enough ranting from me, I'll go off one frustrated longhair.

If I don't wash my hair for a few days the scalp oil weighs my hair down quite a bit and helps it look better and be more controllable. However a day or two after it has dried from washing, it's very dry and "big" looking. Anyone recommend products to keep it weighed down? (Oils or such)

Yes, last year I purchased Rogaine and I am kind of worried if I start using it on my long hair I might lose hair with the first application. The reason I want to use it is because I don't want to experience hair loss. Is it safe with long hair and will I see some hair loss with the first application?
Also, will Rogaine prevent dryness in ends of long hair?
If I drink alcohol while using Rogaine or smoke will there be any side-effects?

HELP!!!! I need some help. I have thick wavy hair and I hate it. It would probably reach the bottom of my chin, but it does this wavy thing up to my eye. It's annoying. I just got a ConAir straightening iron yesterday. I need help on how to use it. Don't you use it on dry hair? Pull down the hair and run the iron through it? I'm probably going to look stuipid here and show my ignorance, but I don't want anyone else to be fooled the way I was. For about seven months I have been growing my hair out and my mom was really supportive. I'm 14. My mom's stylist was trimming my hair and she was really cool. But about 3 months ago she left and my mom got a new stylist. She started saying that my hair was really limp and lank and stuff and she started saying to my mom that I should get a body wave. Then a few weeks back my mom came home and told me she had booked me in for a body wave for yesterday. I didn't know what a body wave was and my mom told me that it just added some body to hair and made it easier to style. But my sister made fun of me later and said that I was getting a perm. I asked my mom, but she said my sister was just lying and teasing me. I tried to find out about body waves on the web but most of the searches came up with either surfing or just saying it added body to the hair. But my sister still teased me. Well, yesterday I had the body wave and I just wanted to warn anyone else who doesn't know that my sister was right and it is the same as a perm. It took about 3 hours and I had my hair in these little tight rollers just the same as a perm and stuff put on my head and covered in bags and stuff. It smelled horrible and it was humiliating sitting among both women and other guys getting stared at. And although the strylist said it would only add body it has made my hair much curlier and more like bigger like it sticks out with more volume. She said it has to relax or something over the next two weeks. My mom thinks it looks better but I hate it and am dreading school tomorrow. Guys, don't do this and take my warning unless you really want hair like that.

dunno if any one here remmbers me but a few months ago my hair was bout 4 inchs long and then i had it cut cause school was starting again and i forgot about growing my hair but i looked in the mirror today and saw my hair was pretty long again at about 3 inches so nearly where i was before so im gonna grow it again and see how far i get this time wish me luck

I've been growing my hair out for about 10 months now. The problem is that its so wavy/curly that it has the tendancy to get really messy and tangled unless I comb it back right out of the shower after some conditioner, and then use a little mousse I heard on this board that combing it wet isn't the best thing for your hair...so am I making it worse?
I'm not sure if that willing to relax or straighten my hair...I think it has potential to look cool curly. Will this tangling problem likely get better or worse as my hair lengthens and lays down better, or will it likely to be a problem I'll always have to deal with? I'm getting tempted to cut it.

I have a problem... I tried growing my hair out before and it turned into a nightmare. I have really thin hair and I found that I couldn't keep up with managing it. I'm trying out growing long hair-my hair is fairly short at the moment(1.5 inch I'd say) but that's not the problem.
Since I remember myself my hair grows in a certain way-the middle of the head and one of the sides are growing in the same direction and the other side the other way-I had no problem while having really short hair(for about 4-5 years)but now that I'm growing it I'm facing the same problem.
At the moment I just comb it that way and apply hair mositurizer and since it short it's no problem but what will happen a few months from now?I'd like my hair to be sepereated in the middle and not in the side(otherwise I'll look weirdy...:) )-what can I do?

Alright come on guys help me here. I wanna grow hair down to like the end of my chin. The farthest ive ever had was about half an inch above my eyebrows. I had a dream of me with this hair that looked perfect, it was at my chin and long.

Do i grow in the hair on the back of my head? Its strange but all i can see is a mullet when i think growin it in.

Ive been growing out an undercut and it is at my ears right now. i did this b/c my school wouldnt allow "real" long hair but my new school doesn't care. So i thought i'd grow it all out now... but i really don't know what i want. when i see someone with long hair i want to have it, then i saw this guy with an awesome looking undercut and i wanted it. i think they both look great but i don't know which one to get. my hair is really dry/damaged/wavy/frizzy/puffy, so is either style better for this?? im going crazy trying to decide what to go with

This defininetly seems to be one of the most active lists I have seen in a very very long time.

The question I have is a simple one as seen in the subject.

I am looking for pictures of roller set patterns , along with pictures of results of bob length (most times ear length , but presently growing out to below the jaw line)hair for my husband.

The more feminine after comb out the better.

We have tried perms but the result is usually to long lasting and he grows tired of the look .
He has been having his hair cut in this manner for the past 3 years and we are looking for something totally fem to try on him.

I will be checking the list more often now that I know it is here , and hope that some of you will email me with the pictures I have been searching for.

my hair is a complete afro when i wake up. i'm wondering though, is this normal? i remember when i was younger and would go sleep over with friends (at about age 10,we didnt have long hair, but it was still longer than average) i always woke up with a big messy afro looking thing and they woke up with near perfect looking hair... i still have the same problem and i'm wondering if this will ever go away or if it is even normal?

Admittedly, I'm a little new to the hair-growing but maybe that's why this advice will be helpful to those of you also starting. Ok, we know that protein supplements will increase your general health and even hairgrowth-not only as a direct result of being healthy but also because your hair just needs protein. (I take a Skin Hair & Nails vitamin).
You may notice that when taking vitamins your urine is yellower and smells stronger than you might be used to. This is because your body is getting rid of nutrients it doesn't use. Wait a minute! Didn't you just spend 7-15 bucks on vitamins!? And there they are in the toilet!!!! ARGH!
Well think about this. Protein, when used by people who workout, helps increase muscle mass (hence all those protein shakes).
Coming to the point: use all the vitamins and work out a little-this way you'll use all the vitamins, you'll be generally healthier, and along with faster hair growth you'll see faster visible muscle growth.
So by the time you're ready to show those precious locks off to the ladies you'll also have strong biceps for them to grasp as they pet your soft and healthy hair.

Now really, will 60 curlups and 10 pushups a day hurt? (Not as much as stinky urine will hurt your pride).

im guessing the my length on top is around 6 inches (bangs just touch nose).
on the sides and back its around 2-3 inches.
i use gel every morning and try to put it back, but now it feels like theres too much weight and length, so it just falls to the side so its parted in the middle. my hair is VERY thick and wirey, and people have been talking about leave in conditioners.
what do they do?
what do you recommend for thick wirey hair that fros up without gel?
how do you typically use it.
now when i dont wash my hair for a couple days my hair is softer, and easier to handle. would a leave in make it like that?

Hello-as u may know, i had long hair up until septemeber, then had it cut. The first time a grew my hair was hell. the awkward stage was awkaward!! but now, as its growing again, it seems so much better, looks better, flatter, and just all over not that awkward!

Do you think its becasue i have my hair trained from when it was long? becasue it is very wiered on how dramatic the difference is. I have fotos of my first awkward stage and they r sooo much worse than how it is now, very wiered.

Hello-im in the awkward stage, whih dusnt seem to be as bad as first time there.

The first time in awkward stage my frined was growing his hair-but he didnt have an awkward stage. He just had curtains and grew them long but it always looked good-not awkward-where as mine was v.awkward. why wud form sum ppl it is awkward and for others its not? strange...?

Also, one of reasons why i cut my hair was becasue i think it didnt look good-becasue when compared to my friends and other with long hair, it just didnt seem right, why wud this be? just self conciousness?

i was channel surfing sunday afternoon and paused on a golf program. the guy who won whatever tournament was being played was a long-hair by the name of pat bates. not being a golf fan in any way, i was very pleasantly surprised to see a long hair even in the sport. i realize that, by some of your standards, he may not have been a true long hair, (it was cut in a mullet...apologies to all of you who are runnning in terror) but it was at least down to the top of his shoulders and i felt it looked nice. and considering the shortage of hair these days period, i was glad to see someone in the public eye, on television, in the media, and in the gamr of GOLF of all things, who had more than a buzz cut!

My hair is bad to say the least. extremely dry/damaged/puffy/frizzy/curly/wavy. i'm just wondering though if the stuff i did before contributed to this. See i have been growing out an undercut from spiked hair. When i used to spike it i would dye it, put tons of gel in it, and sometimes put glue in it to get the spikes to stay up. I never conditioned only used shampoo everyday. I'm sure all this stuff helped to screw up my hair right?? If i cut off the ends which are al REALLY REALLY split would this help? i'm considering growing the rest of my hair out now anyways so i wouldn't mind losing a bit of what i have on top to let it even out.

Well its been a week and I haven't seen any changes to my hair or anything else.My wife owns her own salon so she has enrolled me in a hair design and cosmotology class at a local beauty school so we can work together.If there is anyone out there with a similar story please let me know how it turned out. thanks

I 've been trying to put my hair into a ponytail for the past few weeks, but it looks pretty stupid. What I do is gather as much of my hair as I can and tie it back. The only problem is that my bangs don't fit into it when slicked back or tucked behind my ears. Do you guys have any suggestions?

I was at my local wal-mart tonight and to my surprise they finally started stocking african american hair produts. They had a half an aisle full of everything from pommade, to relaxer, to some herbal stuff that was supposed to make your hair grow faster! After spending an hour, yes an hour, looking at the products. I purchased Dax pommade, African Gold oil moisturizer hair lotion, and soft and beautiful conditioner. I first tried the Dax pommade. I rubbed it b/t my hands and put in it my hair and combed it through like it said on the container. It did make my hair look longer, but really greasey, plus it was still abit curly. I then tried the oil moisturizer and that made my hair worse causing it to separate into pieces of oily curls. I didn't try the conditioner yet but I hope it's going to be good. Overall I'm a very disappointed man that really needs to wash his hair now, lol.
